We had best piano, now let's talk abut my favorite instrument - the saxophone!

My all-time favorite is of course "Shame."
    What are yours?

"Shame" is an excellent choice - especially the sax solo in between the two percussion breaks - it has a real haunting quality about it! Fantastic, I agree!

I would like to add two records:

Mystic Merlin - Just Can't Give You Up

    and

Arthur Adams - You Got The Floor

If it moves - funk it!!

"Shame" is an excellent choice. And the sax break on the extended version of "Hot Stuff" is pretty awesome too.

Good instrument choice Lean. I love the sax and I started learning how to play it in jr high school. One day I will complete my training.
OK, I love it in "Shame." I also like it in "Pick Up The Pieces" and "Work To Do" by AWB. There are many more and when I think of 'em, I'll come back to this thread and list them.

My vote goes to Jimmy "Bo" Horne's classic "Spank".

Maybe not tracks you thinking of first:

Mtume - Sweet For You And Me (Monogamy Mix), from the album You, Me And He (1984)

Change - Your Move, from the album Miracles (1981)

    Greetings, Cees

In the car at lunch, I played a couple of songs with awesome sax play. The first, "Joyous" from Pleasure. The other and this ought to get you moist if you love saxophones is "Unfinished Business" by "The Backbyrds."

...mmmmhhh there's a great solo of sax in "Oceanliner" by Passport, 1980. It's really not disco but give it a listen, it's great.
Otherwise AWB's "Pick up the pieces" is great, too.
    Ciao!

I'll have to add almost any Players Association record but especially the searing sax solo on their rendition of Disco Inferno. Then there's the Brecker Brothers funky stuff from the mid-late '70s.
I also thought the sax on Montana Sextet's 'Heavy Vibes' was just right and of course another fave of mine is Mike T's 'Do It Anyway You Wanna' instrumental side.

The most original sax sound has to be Eddie Harris on 'Get On Down' where he uses either wah wah peddle or some sort of pitch shift that almost makes the sax sound like how Jimi Hendrix might have played it, if you get my drift. The wah wah effect is really pronounced and great on 'Funkaroma'(?) too, from his 'Is It In' LP.

Being a sax player myself I'd have thought I would have made a mental note of all those disco songs with sax in! But alas I haven't.

However, some which come to mind are:
    Crusaders - Street Life
    and from the same player:
Wilton Felder - Inherit the wind

One which I have actually played myself is the solo in Sharon Redd's "Can you handle it" - Cool!

    Here's a couple more:
    My other all time favorite,
    "Dancer"

and (this isn't really disco IMHO, but I LOVE Teena Marie,
    "L-O-V-I-N'"

    QUINNY,

Yes, Brecker Brothers! We used to dance to "Sneakin' Up Behind You" 1975 if I recall right. That cut is hard to find on CD!

    Paul,
A black friend of mine used to test my R & B knowledge and one of the questions she asked me was "Who did 'I Got Work To Do?'"
Of course I immediately answered, "Average White Band." She said "NO, it's the Isley Brothers!" Of course I was stunned - I was SO SURE it was AWB. But when I looked, I could not find that song by them anywhere (this was in 1995). So, what do you think? I know the Isley Brothers did it, but I still can hear the unforgettable AWB voices!

    Hey Lean.
Yep, I'm familiar with The Isley Brothers original "Work To Do." I much prefer AWB's version. It's one of those rare moments for me when the remake is better than the original.

LeanMean: Sneakin Up Behind You was THE best by them IMO. Shame about the sound quality of the 7", which was absolutely awful, although the funk shone through.

    Let me try,

(soft x-rated disco) "love in c menor"/Cerrone, saxofone solo by Ray Swinfield.

(70's r&b) "so very hard to go"/Tower of Power, fluegelhorn solo by Greg Adams.

Thank you, Jussi. LOVE that "Summertime". Now, back to sleaze: Hodges, James & Smith, "Since I Fell for You/I'm Falling in Love. The sax break on the 12" version pumps the second half of the piece.

This one has my vote also. Aside from Teena being my second all time fav voice (Chaka is in first place), I Need Your Lovin is in my top 20 all time fav party tunes list.

Both Teena and Rick James had A LOT of...er...sax in their songs.

There's a nice sax break in Vicki Sue Robinson's "Hold Tight."

Damn, the disco years were good!

Geez I sound like my mom back in the 60's rock era when she tried to tell me Big Band was the height! (You know, though, I always said disco has its roots in big band.)

It wasn't very long, but the solo sax riff in Peace Pipe by B.T. Express was classic.

    Cool subject :D :D

I agree with all of these picks... I have a few to add also...
    I'll list them in order.

    1. Average White Band - Pick Up The Pieces
    2. Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up
    3. Rolling Stones - Miss You (LP Version)
    4. Ohio Players - Sweet Sticky Thing

Winner of best Horn Section... hands down...
Tower Of Power.... So Very Hard To Go/You're Still A Young Man I play those songs often... It's sad that pop music has changed so much, you never get to hear new horn sections. Chicago - Ohio Players - AWB, etc. etc. etc.

Donna Summer's "Once Upon A Time", "Hot Stuff" (12" version), and "Walk Away".
    Undisputed Truth's "You + Me=Love" as well.

Hey efunk. I love T of P too. In addition to the ones you mentioned, I also play "What Is Hip" a lot.
The "kids" are use to the sound of today's pop I guess. Since we've feasted on real musicians it's hard for us to stomach a lot of today's music.
