I'll agree with you on "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"--I thought that sucked big time.
Yep. Hunchback to me is three minutes of Costandinos' greatest music ever, buried in a 35-minute campfest.
The music at the start of each side is great -- the opening of "The Pope Of Fools" has a kick-ass beat, but the energy level drops by half as soon as the song really gets underway. Likewise, the ballad "Phoebus And Esmeralda" is absolutely gorgeous -- but after only two minutes, it goes from the sublime to the ridiculous when we hear the shouts of "OH MY GOD!" "The sorceress has killed the captain!!"
Had this album been done without the dialogue, it would been several parsecs better.
well, believe it or not.

Well, Tina Charles was very popular all around the world. Back in 1976 "I love to love" and "Dance, little lady dance" were extremely popular in Peru. I mean, a massive radio airplay for both songs. I had the chance to travel to Rio de Janeiro with my family by october that year and they were also playing her songs all the time. Sadly, she didn't make it in the US. I guess they were too busy playing "Play that funky music" for the trillionth time.
Have a Disco Life.
My favourite Tina song was 'Disco Fever' - didn't the dancemove, the crab, originate with this song?
Here in Montreal, she was very popular. 'You Set My Heart on Fire', 'Dance Little Lady Dance' and especially 'I Love To Love' were mega.
And 'Why' was a huge slow hit in the clubs and on the radio.
What a gorgeous song.
Others I remember enjoying were 'Love Bug' and the truly infectious 'Hey Boy'.
I never knew she was greek - wow, we have something in common.
tina charles.... i actually liked her music.... specially her song you set my heart on fire...... i absolutey absolutely love that song..... i'm on fire is also amazing...... go is again very good...... of course u cant compare her to donna summer .... but nice singer none the lesss..... and secondly i like her voice.... she has a nice voice..... :):).... a cover version of you set my heart on fire was released by faith and evans in 80's..... if anyone has that song.... can u please please please post it on some site... or mail me thisgiveslifetothee@hotmail.com..... i would really reallly appreciate... i cant find it anywehere..... i would really reallly be very greatful......:):)
I concur with Tina's critics, but "I'm on Fire" with 5000 Volts is a cut above. More bubblegum than cheese, the song also lives up to its title with a lickety-split arrangement; as far as I know there was no 12", and the 45 clocks in at under 3 minutes. Tina sounds more like a revved-up Penny McLean than the schmaltztress of "Dance Little Lady, Dance," and in a disciplined arrangement with baritone backups. Had The Boystown Gang recorded in 1975, surely this would have been their hit!
Re: "Love Insurance" upthread: I disagree that it was avant-garde; it screams '79! Yet I rank it among the 50 best disco records I've ever heard. Sharon Redd's performance, infamously dissed by her producers, is worthy of the R&B diva Pantheon; her nervous contralto is ideal for the material, and her phrasing and timing are PERFECT. The composition leaps over dozens of bars; its famous breakdown is really a song within a song; and you cannot find a better-engineered disco record. Few were better arranged or produced.
Re: Liquid Gold. Do I correctly understand one poster to praise this group while dissing Rosebud? I DON'T THINK SO..."Have a Cigar" is not necessarily in my top 500, yet has aged better than almost any disco recrod I can remember. Its stripped-down snare, kickdrum and synths, which I once forgave as a primitive example of Eurodisco trying to find itself in '77, was in fact a premonition of Progressive House and Techno, down to its sexy, sinister, lyrics, which now sound like a terse warning, not the near-nonsense I considered it to be when I was a young man.
Liquid Gold was not cheese, but only because it fails the standards of Cheddar and Roquefort. I admit, it does seem appetizing at first bite at high velocity from a spray can. When I first heard "My Baby's Baby," I thought I had died and gone to heaven; however, each subsequent listen has sapped more of my will to live. The unique trans-fats of this disco "smash" may account for its barely missing the Billboard Top 40 in the middle of disco's fatal heart attack, which it surely helped cause. And yes, "Dance Yourself Dizzy" was big too, but there is no accouting for taste. At least Asha Bhosle ripped off its beginning with odd charm for her bug-out 1981 India hit "Disco Station." Close as Liquid Gold got to a good record, IMO.
Hey freddyinptown...

12 weeks on the chart (9/6/75 - 11/22/75)/ 6 weeks in the Top 10/ Peak:# 3
In the spring of 1976, Tina charted "I Love to Love" on some U.S. charts...(mostly NYC retailers)
In October of 1976, Tina's "Dance Little Lady, Dance" charts only on the Montreal chart in Billboard....
What happened after that, remains to be written......![]()

markydefad, you're too kind.
Joe.My.God. really outdid himself today.
His footage of the Remember The Party crowd, white balloons, and "Countdown/This is It!" almost said it all. But what he wrote reminds me of the emotional pull this music has accumulated with years.
I came out in early '82, after the cake had been bought out but before the crumbs were snatched away. In those last carefree months (that is, unless you were already dying or grieving in NY and SF), DJs left peak hours to classics, even as they opened and closed with records ("Zulu," "Seabiscuit in the Fifth," "Your Love," "A Desert Place") that grafted new-wave vocals over disco arrangements. I felt perspective in this confusion -- but of course, I had no idea...
Everything I've danced to since, from freestyle to Chicago and Progressive House, Techno, and whatever you might call the sound of now, is reflected in the mirrored ball when I step onto the floor at a Saint-at-Large or Body & Soul night, and hopefully, next year's RTP. Add the reflected grief Joe wrote about so well, and Voila - wrinkles that can dance on their nipples!
Freddy, Joe.My.God. is such an incredible writer. His blog about the Troc's 30th anniversary was so beautiful!
BTW, take a peek at the homepage on the www.remembertheparty.com website for a very cool photo from the balloon drop!
Also, I thought you would find it amusing to know that I filmed a short clip of Joe singing at the Party to... Liquid Gold's "My Baby's Baby"!!! :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:
keefelc, surely we can come to terms on e-mailing me a copy of Joe's rendition...purely for academic purposes:icon_twisted::icon_twisted::icon_twisted:
I'm not a fan of La Charles but if I had to choose a fave track then it would be 'Fire Down Below' from 'The Stud' soundtrack. (Fire down below -that's always the effect Oliver Tobias had on me!)
...ya gotta beat the street......
Tina Charles gave disco music a bad name, she recorded possible the worst songs of all time and had a screechee horrid voice coupled with no body co-ordination to move to the beat.
Every time I heard any of her songs I walked away from the dance floor for a drink/toilet break to get out of earshot of her crohnic warbling.
If I hear it now which luckily I dont often I reach for the OFF switch.
I saw her interviewed once and she didnt even rate her own voice but said she enjoyed her moments of fame.
Truly Awfull.
To each his own !
I always though Tina had a great voice and 'I Love To Love' is definatley a classic of it's kind !
Has to be said though that Biddu did have a particular production style and some times he tipped into a very pop style, but thats hardly Tina's fault.
Jerryl, you absolutely have the right to criticise Tina Charles, that's called freedom of speech but...there are other ways to express your thoughts!
Your post is simply rude and could trigger very angry reactions from people that do like her and that's something we have to avoid!
I hope I'm being very clear!
Bristol eh? Hmmmmm

All I am saying is an opinion, I cant see what is offensive about my comments.
If we all thought the same a forum becomes boring and pointless
I saw the interview myself.
Tina Charles admitted to having no co-ordination to dance (watch the video if you get the chance) and that she did not have a great voice and that she jumped on the disco band wagon.
Good for her - she had her short lived fame - but good disco music?
Meanwhile other artist's such as crown heights affair epitomised the great disco era and were all talented musicians aswell as accomplished vocalists.
You've learned even more than you think you've learned !! :icon_mrgreen:
don't forget :
I'll vote it my favorite TC song .366) I'M ON FIRE - 5000 Volts feat. Tina Charles
(Philips) F= 7; Total points = 7
1 week on the chart (12/6/75); Peak: #31
( Tina Charles does not appear on the DJ TOP 700 chart. :icon_rolleyes: )
