The female backup version is off the Alton McClain & Destiny lp, 'MORE OF YOU'. The album credits vocals to "Johnny & Alton" on "HANG ON IN THERE BABY".
I have two versions of "Hang On In There Baby". One on a compilation and the other an mp3.
One version has Johnny singing his own back-up, the other has a woman back-up vocalist. Were there two versions of this song released?

Oh, that's interesting. Then I guess the version I assumed was the "long version" with the female vocal was actually a re-recording with Alton McLain? How long is Johnny's original version?
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Don't have it in front of me but I believe it's about the same or shorter than this one, which is 3:58.On 2002-10-16 20:35, markydefad wrote:

I have it on a cheesy compilation, and it's very short, probably less than 3 minutes. But I suspect the compilation producers may have edited it (it's one of those crappy Ronco/K-Tel comps with, like, 10 songs on each side). As Foucault wrote, "That tells me nothing."
OK, I'm home now. The long version I have is on "The Best of DiscoFunk--Disco Nights Vol 2" (Rebound Records). It times at 5:06 and does feature a female vocal very prominently. I always assumed it was a background vocalist--BUT listening to it now, I see it must be the version with Miss McClain from 1980. Why I didn't realize that earlier, I have no clue!!!! DUH!!!
However, it is a very excellent version--even if it's a remake.

Hey guys,
Johnny Bristol, nice topic. Before he became a star in his own right in the 70's with songs like HANG ON IN THERE BABY, the guy was one of the greatest composers and producers of the MOTOWN crew. He produced tons of classic records for Berry Gordy's empire. One of the key figures of 60's soul, for sure.
By the way, Nick, you're "singing" FULL OF FIRE by AL GREEN? One of my favorite tracks by the highest priest of Soul.

Hey Nicky. Does the rest of your signature song say "you're my one desire..."?
Find them and destroy them!
It does sound like the Al Green track. I was about to ask the same question. On 2002-10-17 01:53, paul wrote:

OK, you all got me. Yes, I'm singing Al Green and yes, "You're my one desire" is the next line.
This is one of the few promos they gave us on 10" instead of 12". This extended version is just a loop back to the middle and out again but I can't help but get into it. The ending just kicks... Al screaming he can dance, Stax working those horns.
Take me back, baby.
