For a guy who shouldn't be spending, you did pretty good. I know that made your weekend. I love coming across finds like these. Some really nice gems and obscure treasures in this lot. I'm envious, very nice.

Went home this past weeklend for my Mom's birthday. While out and about, I stumbled on a bunch of used 80s records. Bought a small stack even though I shouldn't be spending. Here's what I picked up and have been busy listening to (except for 2-3, all are 12" promos)...

Diana Ross - Mirror, Mirror (RCA 1981)
Rocket - Here Comes My Love (Quality/RFC 1983)
Gwen Guthrie - Love In Moderation (Island 1984)
Evelyn King - I'm In Love (RCA 1981)
Quincy Jone feat. James Ingram - One Hundred Ways (A & M 1981)
Gary's Gang - Makin' Music (Radar 1983)
Change - Heaven of My Life (Atlantic/RFC 1981)
Kashif - I Just Gotta Have You (Arista 1983)
Jeff Harrison/Casual Gods - Rev It Up (To Heller and Back Mix) (Sire 1988)
Jenny Burton - Remember What You Like (Atlantic 1983)
Jimmy Castor - Amazon (Dream 1984)
Miami Sound Machine - Dr. Beat (Epic 1984)
Modern Romance - Everybody Salsa (WEA 1982)
Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen (Jive 1984)
Irene Cara - Fame (Special Disconet Remix 7:38) (RSO 1983)
Narada Michael Walden - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (Warner Bros 1985)

Sammy,
Thanks for the thumbs up on my finds. Lots of great tunes from Melba Moore, Kashif, Change, Gary's Gang and others. I didn't know some of them like Rocket and I really liked that one. The only downer was "Amazon" by Jimmy Castor which was super lame-nothing like his earlier material. At only $1.98 each(!!!) how could I pass them up? In fact, if it wasn't for my Mom and girlfriend coming to drag me away, I would have bought more

Wow Bernie I love that selection! That Kashif track is one of my favourites of the 80's & others like Heaven 17 & Gwen Guthrie are fabulous. Happy listening!

Thanks for the positive note. I was thrilled to stumble upon these tunes. I know all of them, except the Rocket and Jimmy Castor tune. Does anyone know anything about the group Rocket? I really like this track even though I don't seem to recall it. The producer is listed as Ray Rock and the remix was done by David Todd.
It goes without saying that I ignored a good many of these so called "Urban" tracks back in the day because I just couldn't get over the shift in sound. I was still stuck on the 70s sound. Over the years I have gotten reacquainted with all these really great tracks and wish I had given them more attention back then. Better late than neverThe Melba Moore track, "Mind Up Tonight" is so good, but seldom heard. Anyway, I've been busy playing these puppies over and over.

Bernie,
All I know about Rocket is that they were produced by a guy called Ray Rock (could be where their name's from?) & were canadian (the home of so many of my favourite disco acts!) & their '82 LP came out on Plateau records. This LP was fabulous but I've never heard of them since! (typical of a disco act!)

Bernie, "I'm in love" is Evelyn's best song, IMHO. Far better than "Shame" (of course I say this because it's funkier).
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
Nano, I totally agree, I'm in Love is so much better than Shame, & I'm not necessarily a funk fan as much as disco. I just think its alot better. I am a Kashif/ Morrie Brown/ Paul Laurence fan though.

I have to partially agree. Personally I felt that Evelyn King really hit the right groove for HER in the early eighties, and although they ran the risk of all being lumped into one stereotypical basket by non lovers, to me they all mostly managed to have seperate identities.
However, I don't think any of them matched 'Shame' for sheer exuberance or ever quite matched it for that certain undefinable something that makes the grooves exude the sheer joy of pure music making.
Having said that, I've heard Shame too many times and sadly, part of that joy has worn off, especially as it's on virtually every general disco compilation there is.
