sfbeary mailed me a list of Disco tunes compiled by some dude--and inquired if I remembered several that he was unfamiliar with. What me??? I ain't no disco expert!!!

So, I thought I'd give the gang here a crack at giving us some info on the following:

(I did look up the chart positions in the Billboard R&B book--to glean whether they charted or not)

"MAKE YOUR MOVE" - Joe Thomas
    (R&B chart: peaked #87 5/26/79 on LRC)

    "PULL MY STRINGS" - Lakeside
    (R&B chart: #31 11/10/79 Solar)

"PARTY TIME MAN" - The Futures
    (R&B chart: #94 1/13/79 Philadelphia Intl)

"I WANT YOU TONIGHT" - Pablo Cruise
(Pop Chart: #19 11/10/79 A&M--Barry heard a sample and said it sucked!!!)

"GO FOR THE MONEY" - Bob McGilpin
(flip of "Superstar) No chart info

"SLOW TRAIN TO PARADISE" - Tavares (UK 12")
    No Chart info

"CAN'T DO WITHOUT LOVE" - The Whispers
    (R&B Chart: #42 6/2/79 Solar)

    "EVERYBODY UP" - Ohio Players
    (R&B: #33 5/5/79 Arista)

"YOU DON'T KNOW LIKE I KNOW" - Gentry
(R&B chart: #51 10/18/80 Venture -Written & produced by Isaac Hayes)

"GIVE IT UP HOT" - Billy Preston (Motown)
    No chart info

    "DON'T STOP" - L.A.X.
    No chart info

"STANDING ON THE VERGE" - Platinum Hook (Motown) No chart info

Anyone know these??? Your opinions solicited!!!!!!! AS IF I had to ask!!!!

I did find ONE on the list of unknowns that I do have:

"LET'S DANCE (PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD)" - George McCrae
    R&B chart: #93 6/24/78 TK

I wrote a * next to it in my little book(connoting that I LIKED IT, uh-huh, uh-huh)--BUT I've gotta listen again to describe it's merits!!!!

Thanks for the warning that came with this thread

I know a couple of those. The Whispers track "Can't Do Without Love" is probably regarded as their best track amongst us Brit soul afficionados, and was massively popular in the soul clubs .. Absolutely glorious tune! .. Thought it was out in '76 though

Ditto Joe Thomas and "Make Your Move". I remember stomping along to that one with what seemed half of London at The Best Disco in Town on a regular Friday night. Big tune!

I remember hearing the Ohio Players on one of the specialist soul shows in London, but I don't think it ever made the clubs...

    The rest - I don't know...

One interesting things I'm beginning to realize on this Board, Marky, is how certain soul tracks that were massive in the UK clubs never did a thing transatlantic - and vice-versa. Fascinating!

If it moves - funk it!!

It's the only decent track in their album of the same title I think. Lousy cover pic with a white background(nothing like their earlier super sexy artwork).

The track is a nice disco number and has its moments but Ohio Players fans won't be thrilled with it.

    hey marky and j_p,

there are so many regional differences when i comes to classics vs. obscure that i intentially opted out of the last recent debate. when i moved from nyc to sf (san francisco) i learned that my enthusiasm for certain tracks that were played constantly not only in nyc clubs but also on nyc radio would fall on deaf ears when talking to my new friends who knew a lot about roger troutman but little about salsoul and prelude. i've consequently warmed up to zapp and the rest, but those "old school" tracks will never reach me like "doctor love" or "i'm caught up in a one night love affair" !!!!

"make that move" i've seen in the bargain bins for many years. in my circle "plato's retreat" was THE cut, and i never bothered hearing anything else by joe thomas after hearing his discofication of dolly parton's "two doors down." but now i'm curious! ditto for the whispers. i thought i already had everything worth owning by them, particularly when i finally found their 1973 *bingo* lp in excellent condition. that one has a few proto-disco tracks that were big on the early nyc club scene and was created by the same people behind first choice.

    thanks for the tips!

Until I have all of my records sorted and in order I'm finding it difficult to say yae or Nae to lotsa tunes. I amaze myself at some of the 12" I actually have. Maybe I was still a collector.
I seem to remember the Platinum Hook record and the Joe Thomas but nothing else.
Now, Do any of you remember.............?
O.K. I'll name one, on Philadelphia International that's a bit obscure, but none the less did well for me on the dancefloor in late '78 / early '79.
BOBBY RUSH - I WANNA DO THE DO. ( Good time bluesey funk with a somewhat strange rhythm pattern and searing organ licks. "Do the do, I wanna do the do, Get on down and do the do"........Feel so good, feel so good, I wanna tear this mutha out").
    Anyone remember that?

    Quinny,

I know I have that somewhere...I do remember the "do the do, do the do, I wanna do the do" line. The lyricist went out of his way with that one...

    OK,
Here is a few obscure ones for ya'll, tell me what you think???

USA Disco People - New Paradise
Disco Is My Life - Boogie People
Ultimate Warlord - The Imortals (still cant find this record but a great track)
    Red Hot - Herb Alpert
Part Time Love - Crystal Blue

These are some great almost impossible to find tracks unless you go major vinyl hunting, does anyone know these?? I played "USA Disco People" by New Paradise in a set I had on one of Bernie's final "DGR" programs before they sadly made him close it if anyone remembers.

I remember 'Red Hot by Herb Alpert' only because I posted it in one of my early threads, which was about an old tape I'd been listening to of me working in about '82. However, having said that, I didn't much remember the track and I can't find a copy of it. I've a feeling it must have been among about 200 12" records that I'd left in semi storage at the club where I worked and were absolutely ruined by a flood.

Platinum Hook's Standing On The Verge of Getting It On is awesome. It's a cover of a Funkadelic or {Parliament tune (can't remember which), but I think it's better. It's about 128 bpm, funky as hell and ace. I still play it a lot now.

I know "Ultimate Warlord" by The Immortals.

It's not one of my favorites.

    Dear Friends!
I remember "The Ultimate Warlord" too, but
orig. from WARLORD, then later released by
THE IMMORTALS. I like both versions of them
and it was a recognizable Hit here in the
    clubs.

I have The Immortals 'Ultimate Warlord' on a Mody Dick compilation CD.

I also have an LP by Bob McGilpin that I found 2nd hand last year but its from 1979. It doesnt include the above track but I like it 'cos its in that late 70's NY style of Dan Hartman/ Theo Vaness that I personally love but soul fans seem to loathe!

BTW, on the LP cover Bob looks like a cross between George Harrison & Magnum PI!_________________

    Hi friends,

Marky and SFBeary, I know just these tracks from your list:

    "PULL MY STRINGS" - Lakeside
    (R&B chart: #31 11/10/79 Solar)
Good song by Lakeside, not their best but good! Similar to Whispers songs from the same period.

"SLOW TRAIN TO PARADISE" - Tavares (UK 12")
I love that!! It's similar to songs from The Trammps.

"CAN'T DO WITHOUT LOVE" - The Whispers
    (R&B Chart: #42 6/2/79 Solar)
I know I have it, but cant remember. I'll check it out.

    "DON'T STOP" - L.A.X.
This is (as far as I remember) a rare groove style song, maybe sounds like Prelude funky songs from the early 80's.

    Peace

Steely, I agree that was a really great album and one that bears playing today....I must go digging for it...(Was that the one called, GET UP ?)

I think it was more in line with the disco rhythm of the day, as you stated, and 12" "Sexy Thing" was played alot on my turntable....if not as often at the clubs as his previous, "Superstar".

BTW, in August '79, Butterfly Records threw a big promo party that was supposed to introduce the company's NY DISCO office to the DJs/reviewers, etc...(Office never happened as the disco 'fallout' began about this time)....Performing were Desination - who were sensational - as well as Denise McCann and Bob McGilpin, all of whom had some new release to plug (I cannot remember who else performed - Nicky, were you there? Maybe Tuxedo Junction?)....Anyway, I met Bob and he was very, very shy and not as HOT as he looked on that cover - he seemed personable but didn't want to tour? That was about the last I had ever seen or heard about him......

    Hi Jimmy,

Check out GEMM, they have vinyl and CD. Also Amazon.com has the Unidisc CD or the "Gay Classics, Vol VII", both with this song.

Well, at least on this list I recognize all the artists. It's just the songs which aren't doing anything for me. To me, that means I didn't play them that much. Have to give a listen before I can opine.

I only know "Let's Dance(People All Over the World)"/George McCrae (6:10) and "Don't Stop"/L.A.X. (1979, Crazy Cat Records), in the same album of the underground hit "Dancin' at the Disco".

I never knew that was big at the Ritz (though I did buy it in King Bee in Chorlton, my favourite record store in the country). Well, I do know Neil Rushton, but I never went to the Ritz all-dayers. I went to the nighters at the Pier and Gardens in Cleethorpes, but I moved to London when I was 17. My name's Bill Brewster. I work as a DJ and writer down here these days.

If you know something about the northern scene, you might know Roger Banks, who's a record dealer based in Nottingham. He was in my class at bnoth my schools, but I've not seen him since we left (a LONG time ago!).

hi ladyboygrimsby yes i realise who you are i also misspent my youth at the pier and gardens alternating with the casino but ALWAYS after the mecca cleethorpes was great not really offering anything youd never heard at the mecca first but i think at cleethorpes the amphetamine consumption was higher than the national average so there were some manic nights listening to the new stuff at the gardens with hours and hours of really uptempo stuff like control tower-magic disco machine, soon everything is gonna be alright-third time around& overture the miracles electric! the cleethorpes story is one of my favourite goldmine c.ds though not their biggest seller, in fact i often sit behind my front door with a packet of biscuits waiting for the postman to bring vol 2 but he never does !!! i usually travelled there with d.j pep i often wonder how the dancefloor never collapsed into the sea at the pier, that noise from the road !the other thing i wonder is what must the local people in that small town have thought !!

rodger was d.jing last time i visited the ritz all-nighters a well respected d.j now !

Is the Ritz on again? That must be something to do with Neil, because he dropped out of the dance scene when Neywork went under and I know he's been getting into northern again. The Gardens rmeinds me of Esther Phillips, Silvetti, Rodger Collins...

Well, I'm still heavily involved in the dance scene even now, and I DJ every weekend so I'd never be abel to go to it. Also, one of the parties I promote, Faith, also happens on the Sunday before a Bank Holiday Monday (and Boxing Day also)... Didn't know Levine got sacked! Wasn't a bit empty the second month they did it?

    TO QUINNY:

"Red Hot" by Herb Alpert is on the way deleated LP "Beyond" from 1980 (the title track is a fave of mine BTW)

And to the people giving some info on "Ultimate Warlord", I didnt know there was 2 versions. I was told in a track listing from a Bobby Viteretti spin that it was by The Imortals. However, Bobby himself told me he thinks it was Ultimate Warlord by Ultimate Warlord. Bobby said to me he forgets some tracks sometimes so, I saw someone mention that the original version was by a group called Warlord. Now, could it be that the version I know is the version by Warlord? Im now confused...lol. If there is anyone from the old Trocadero days out there (Marky?????) and has a copy of the Castro St Fair Tea Dance, it's on the 2nd half right before "Eve Of The War" by War Of The Worlds (Jeff Wayne/Justin Hayward as it says on my german import 12)

    Hi Discodisk,

it's good to know that THE ORIGINALS are still doin' concerts. In my opinion, this is one of the best soul groups of the early, mid-seventies and they never got the appreciation or the critical aclaim they deserved. Their MOTOWN records are the best, but they recorded some pretty good stuff after MOTOWN - some hot soul disco tracks. Did you see the concert by THE ORIGINALS?

    Peace,

    zeca azevedo, hearing THE BELLS
