I've just heard a brilliant track on Greg Edward's radio show by Richard Evans & I thought you could be the person to ask about this artist. I thought it was a brilliant track being jazzy but very 'disco' too. Any info on Mr.Evans or the track Jazz?

Steely; Probably 'Burning Spear' from '79 or thereabouts on A&M. One of my faves.
great slab of driving disco funk with spacey intro, fat horn stabs, jazzy sax licks, pounding latin feel piano solo two thirds the way through and then a weird (soprano) sax solo right towards the end. Only ever saw this one 12" from him and I think this may have been the official 'B' side. The other side was 'Do Re Me for Soul' or similar
    from memory.

Thanx Quimny. I'm pretty sure it was 'Do Re Me for Soul' that Greg played; I think its fabulous. So many jazz-fusion artists in the late 70's made great disco records like James Mason's 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' & Azymuth's 'Jazz Carnival'. If you listen to the current jazz-fusion stuff it all sounds like elevator 'muzak' to me! I think there is good stuff around on independent labels but hearing it is the problem. I think its been discussed here b4 though.

I found the Deviation show 12 Midnight - 2am Thursday/Friday on BBC 1 Xtra the other night quite interesting. There were some good funk jazz grooves and the mixing was really good. A bit elevatorish, but I think I could get to like some of it.

    Hi Steely,

I was listening to the show as well, of course, and it was Do Re Me For Soul, a track that we certainly used to dance to back in the day! What did you make of that T-COnnection track and Cush? Quite interesting!

I have been a fan of Greg Edwards ever since his legendary Soul Spectrum show on Capital Radio in the Seventies and his regular Friday night gig at The Best Disco In Town at the Lyceum just off The Strand in London. In the Eighties I had a friend from Tonbridge who was a personal friend of Greg's and I had the priviledge of having a couple of pints with Greg on a couple of occasions after his stint at the Dun Cow in the Old Kent Road in south London....

Glad you are listening to and enjoying his show. I tell you - Greg is THE BUSINESS!!!!

Love both James Mason and Azymuth.

Goodness me. I've just played Do Re Me for Soul all the way through for the very first time! And.......................... it made me realize why I NEVER played it in the day.
Wow, I actually played a 'B' side in preference to the 'A'. That was probably a first and only one (except instrumental mixes that were officially 'Bs').
I'm really surprised Greg played Do Re Me in preference to 'Burning Spear', especially as the show is on Jazz FM. Maybe another week?
I'll be so glad when I can tune into the show in a few weeks time.

Jazz, was it me or did Deodato's 'Whistle Bump' sound slightly different when greg played it on friday nite?! The rhythm guitar seemed very to the fore while the orchestration was very muffled. Maybe it was a slight remix?

You could be right, Steely. Sometimes he does play with some of the songs at home - remixing them slightly. But usually he says when he does that.
