Another Friday come and gone this week @ Larry Holmes Ringside. Nice crowd this week enjoying good food, good spirits and most of all good people. These were just some of the classics I played this past Friday:

Who loves you - The Four Seasons
    After Dark - Patti Brooks
Shake your body down - The Jacksons
    Lovely day - Bill Withers
    Shine on - One Way
Music makes you feel like dancing - Brass
    Construction
Can you get it - Mandrill
Now you choose me - Pleasure
Jammin' big guitar - Vaughn Mason
Rescue me - A taste of honey

Just to name a few. Also, on the mellow side some of the classics spun were,

If this world were mine - Luther Vandross/Cheryl Lynn
Two Hearts - Stephanie Mills/Teddy Pendergrass
Too much, too little, too late, - Johnny Mathis/Deniece Williams
Can you stand the rain - New Edition

Hope nothing but good memories come from these. I had fun playing them, pull them out and do the same.

    Easy,

Pickin' up on my previous post #13. Glad to see the Blaxman flying around and in full effect. I feel safer knowing the superhero of music is lurking in the wings. As for your one measly 'K', nothing measly about The Manhattans or that track. 'K'iller song in every sense of the word. Now onto some more 'K'iller 'K'uts:

Knock, knock - The Dazz Band (Awesome slow jam)
Kissing you - Keith Washington (A personal fave from '91)

    Oh wait, time for some more 'L'ovely tunes;

Let's find the time for love - Shalamar
    Love is - One Way

'L'et's see how you respond to this latest display of the sweet science by Dr. Love.

    Easy,

Will catch up with your Friday night list later, Sammy Looks good! ...

Thanks for not being too rude about my one measly K!! I only know one of your K's and L's and that is One Way with "Love Is". That is a lovely track!! As for the others, as I always say, I bet they are good!

The sweet science of Dr Love. Pah!

I have some great choices coming up for L and M, and have been looking to lay these on ya !!!

Love's Train - Con Funk Shun - had to put this one in. It's thanks to you, Sammy, that I discovered this one, and I am very grateful. I am really hammering it at the moment!!

Long After Tonight Is All Over - Jimmy Radcliffe - from 1964!! I think discodisk will remember this classic, as I believe it was always the last record to be played at the Wigan Casino! A glorious knee-trembling soul ballad in any case!!

Misty Blue - Dorothy Moore - nowe Sammy's getting worried!!

Midnight And You - Love Unlimited Orchestra OR a very creditable 2002 version by D-Influence - smooth... sultry .... sexy... not me, you idiots! The record!!!

JP for Doctor Love? The surgery is open!!!

Jazz really going to town on me. Between the classic 'Love's train' to going way back to '64, then hitting me with a blast from the past with 'Misty Blue' and finishing with a track from Love Unlimited that is covered by the talented Acid Jazz band D-Influence. I think it is safe to say you covered all aspects in that round. But, you know I'm ready to comeback so here goes:

    First a bonus 'L' track,

Love's calling - Zingara (you know I love this one)

    now onto my 'M'ighty 'M's:

Make it last - Con Funk Shun (Another classic monster slow cut from them)
    Magic man - Robert Winters

    and a bonus track,

My eyes adored you - Frankie Valli (I guess you can tell I really like Frankie Valli)

What?, not enough; Well try this 'N'asty list:

Never can say goodbye - The Jackson 5 (I can go back too )
Never let it fade away - Instant Funk (Did you know about this one?)

'N'ice! If I must say so myself. Beware, the love doctor is here.

    Easy,

    Hi Sammy,

I'm not exactly in full effect btu, you are!!! Great list (as always) my brother!!!

That Brass Construction's track is incredibly crazy (and good)!!!!

"Shake Your Body" is one of my faves from The Jacksons, I love that instrumental part at the end of the song!!

    Mandrill.........blockbuster!!

A Taste of Honey......taste of honey indeed!!

I'm a little rusty yet!! I'll take some time to go back to this battles, OK?

But, certainly, I will be watching it!!

    Peace

Just taking a break from the surgery  to comment on your Friday night tunes! The usual excellent choice though one or two are a bit obscure ...

My pick of your bunch, Sammy? I'll go with Al Hudson and "Shine On". That's the only one of their disco hits I haven't got! If I recall it has a powerful driving beat.

That Pleasure track is a bit obscure. Don't know that one. Heard "Ghettos Of The Mind" on the radio on Friday night and am pleased to see that 2 of Pleasure's LPs have just been released on a new CD!

Brass C - love that track! Dr Love is cool!

Bill Withers - how the hell does he manage to hold that note for so long?? Brilliant vocal performance!

And as for your slow jams - the first three are wonderful... especially that Johnny Mathis track...hmm - might well use that one in the challenge!! I think the harmonies on that tune work so well!

    Well done Sammy!!

Sammy's getting mad with me and pulling out all the stops!! :???: Even if he has to edit his message TWICE!!

Some sumptuous slow jams in there - I love that Zingara track as well! Must check - have I got that Con Funk Shun track? From which LP did that Instant Funk track come, Sammy? Funnily enough, I like that Franki Valli track too! Who is Robert Winters?? Bit obscure isn't it?

And now onto my tracks - N and O this time ...

(No Matter How High I'll Get) I'll Still Be Looking Up To You - Bobby Womack / Altrina Grayson

Next Best Thing to Being There - Randy Brown

Ooh La La La - Teena Marie (and I love the picture of Teena on the front cover of the 12-inch I have of that - tasty!!)

One In A Million - Larry Graham (had a 12-inch copy of it in my hands 2 weeks ago, but it was too scratched to be worth buying  )

Four absolute crackers! Forget about the rest, I'm the best!! THE DOCTOR IS IN!!!

 Jazz says "Four absolute crackers", I love it; And you were right too. Bobby Womack, sultry soul is what he is. I knew you were going with that Larry Graham track, that is one of your favorites. You took one of my 'O's with Teena Marie though. Don't know the Randy Brown track. As for Instant Funk and 'Never let it fade away', it was on the LP from '78 which featured 'I got my mind made up'. Also, the Con Funk Shun track was from the LP 'Loveshine' also from '78 I believe. Now to really get 'O'pen with some 'O's, how about:

Oh no - The Commodores (Lionel Richie's genius once again)
Ooh boy - Rose Royce (I love this one)

'O'oh that hurts I know. But, wait. Time to really 'P'ounce all over you with some 'P's,

Push me away - The Jacksons
Practice what you preach - Barry White (The love doctor strikes for Dr. Love)

'P'ulverizing action all over JP from Dr. Love himself. Can JP recover, we will see.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

Jazz, if you want to skip the 'Q's and go to the 'R's that is fine with me as I can only think of one love ballad that starts with 'Q' and it is probably the same one you're thinking of. I'll leave it up to you.

    Sammy--

Your list is very good. "Who Loves You" was a great comeback record for the 4 Seasons in '75. "After Dark" by Patti Brooks was a good one from the TGIF soundtrack. "Shake Your Body" by the Jacksons was another good one.

On the slower side, "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams is one of my faves.

    Good song selection.

Ouch! You are certainly keeping up the pressure, Sammy! Lovce that Rose Royce track - forgot all about that one! And then you keep attacking me with Lionel Ritchie and Bbarry White!! It's not fair!!

BTW I have that Instant Funk LP so its time to discover yet another new gem hidden deep in my record collection!!

Here are my entries for P and R. My brain is so befuddled - I couldn't even come up with One Q - what was yours Sammy??

People Make the World Go Round - Stylistics
Please Darling Don't Say Goodbye - Linda Clifford

Right Place, Right Time - Denise LaSalle & Latimore
    Reunited - Peaches And Herb

Will try and get back to you in the next round today if I can!

First of all, Robbie, thanks for your comments on the playlist. I'm happy you enjoyed it and they brought back some positive memories for you. You were right about 'Who loves you'. If you've read some of my past posts you will see I'm a big fan of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Now onto Jazz and our on-going battle of the ballads. Very nice round Jazz. I completely forgot about The Stylistics and that classic by them. As for my one 'Q', a fave of mine:

    Quiet Storm - Smokey Robinson

I know you are kicking yourself right now for not remembering that one. Now to really 'R'ock your world:

Round & round & round - Gary's Gang (A Sam "ALL JAM" obscure gem)
Reasons - Earth, Wind & Fire (Easily a top 5 slow jam pick)

Two off my top ten slow jam list Jazz. You know I'm fired up now. Oh but wait, to really 'S'izzle, check this out:

Silly love song - Enchantment (How much do I love these guys)
Starting over - Slave (Another obscure gem from the 'Stone Jam' LP)

'S'cintillating round for me if I must say so myself. I have to work out of the office for a few hours so I don't know if I'll get another round in before you leave for the day. However, I think this monster round will hold you for awhile. Look forward to you response.

Quiet Storm - AARRRGGGHHHH!!! I heard that only the other day! :???:

I know you love that Gary's Gang track! One day I shall hear it too! Same with that Slave track! That EWF track is gorgeous - there can't have been many bands who were such all-rounders - disco tracks, jazz tracks, funk tracks and soul tracks all mixed in on the LPs together... And Enchantment - fanntastic! No wonder you had to step out of the office - I guess you needed a beer to cool yourself down!!

Now onto my next entries in the challenge, and they are hot! Hot!Hot! Hot! JP's prescriptions for L-O-V-E !!

Shine On - LTD - a truly wonderful song!

Someday We'll All Be Free - Wilton Felder
    - the killer blow from the Doctor!!

The Closer I Get To You - Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway - I know it gets mentioned every Challenge, but come on, it is worth it just for Roberta's vocals alone - perfect!!

This Is Your Life - Norman Connors - my favourite NC slow jam with those vocals that soar to the heights!!

Now Sammy you'll have to step out of the office again - for another beer! Preferably ice cold!

BTW On that Debra Laws track you and Blax were discussing, I always thought the male vocals were from brother Ronnie Laws. Probably wrong, but could be possibe??

    BTW Sammy,

I couldn't find any U's, X's and Z's. And the only V I could find is the obvious one!
So if you have any entries for these, I would be interested to see them!

I told you I found this Challenge difficult - mainly becuase my record collection is more geared to uptempo stuff, and I always have, until now, ignored some of the slow jams I have hidden away on my LPs. But not any more!!

What about the next Challenge? What do you reckon? Shall we keep it as an alphabetical musical genre? Maybe DISCO perhaps!!

    Jazz:

For a guy whose focus was on uptempo stuff, you're taste in slow jams is pretty good. LTD, Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway, Norman Connors; That all sounds pretty good to me. You stumped with the Wilton Felder track though. Gotta look for that one. Now let me blast you into the next challenge with this potpourri I came up with on short notice:

This must be heaven - Brainstorm
Together - The Intruders or Tierra
Turn off the lights - Teddy Pendergrass
Under the moon, over the sky - Angela Bofill
    Valentine love - Norman Connors
Voyage to Atlantis - The Isley Brothers
What you won't do for love - Bobby Caldwell
Why have I lost you - Cameo
Where is the the love - Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway
Where do we go from here - Enchantment
You are my starship - Norman Connors
You and me - Rockie Robbins
Yearnin' for you love - The Gap Band

Whew! What an all-star lineup; On short notice no less. I just wish I can think of another 'U'. Maybe later. As for the next challenge, disco sounds great. Especially since everyone on the board thinks we're just funk/soul enthusiasts.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

P.S. - Feel free to add any to the remaining letters on the ballad challenge I missed. I would love to hear them.

Thanks for your kind comments, Sammy! The gentleman as always! Actually, I thought my last four was about my strongest selection so far. But I gotta hand it to ya, Sammy - you win this one!!  Your knowledge of slow jams is awesome, truly awesome!

The Wilton Felder track was off his 1979 LP "Inherit The Wind" and had Bobby Womack, no less, guesting on vocals. Truly awesome! That is the sort of music that I was spending my university grant (stipendium) on !!!

Looking at your T's through Y's, I am very impressed... I had these in my list Teddy Pendergrass, Bobby Caldwell, Enchantment, Roberta Flack/DH and Norman Connors - all out of the top drawer of course!... That Bobby Caldwell track still remains very popular and had made ripples in the "smooth jazz" genre of the new Millenium... Also, I am sure I remember that Rockie Robbins track!
Well done for getting a U and a V - you beat me!!

Here are my final selections - including some bonus tracks!!

That's The Way Of The World - EWF
    Taxi - J Blackfoot

Not only did "Taxi" get a UK release, which is a miracle for a US indie soul record (Soundtown records) but such was the buzz on it that it reached #42 in the pop charts! What a great success that was! An obscure indie soul record that made it through to the big time!!

Woman To Woman - Shirley Brown
We Ought to Be Doin' It - Randy Brown
Why Can't We Be Lovers - Lamont Dozier

You Don't Have To Be A Star - Marilyn McCoo / Billy Davis Jnr
You Ought To Be In Pictures - Lamont Dozier
You Send Me - Roy Ayers

Roy Ayers - a fitting way to end this challenge! I really enjoyed it! Thanks Sammy my friend!

What about three entries per letter under DISCO? Let's see what happens!

Do you want to start things off? When you can think of some tunes??

    Jazz:

'You send me' by Roy Ayers, how did I know you would list that one. Now onto, the disco challenge. I was a little stumped right from the start, but then some obvious choices came to my head.

After Dark - Patti Brooks (I just played this one last Friday)
At Midnight - T-Connection (Sorry Jazz, I know how much you like them)
And the beat goes on - The Whispers

'A'stounding start to this new challenge. The first thought I had was the following, however, I didn't think it could be classified as disco,

    Autobahn - Kraftwerk

Good luck, this letter is a little tricky.

    Easy,

Nice call on the A's Sammy! "Autobahn" definitely qualifies as disco in my book! A truly great disco record !! T-Connection and The Whispers - Got them both! Would have pput them both in! Don't know yout Patti Brooks tune!

Thanx for the warning! I know I shall enjoy going through my records - seeing what I can come up with tonight! And I am sure I won't disappoint you tomorrow!!
You wait and see!

"Just a little bit of jazz tonight, makes me feel alright"; Classic, love it Jazz. How could I have forgotten 'Ain't no stoppin' us now', that was Larry Holmes theme song every time he stepped into the ring. I DJ for Larry Holmes at his club, duh. :???: But, these challenges will do that to you. However, I'm ready to 'B'oogie into this next round with the following:

Big Blow - Manu Dibango (A Disco classic)
Best beat in town - Switch (A band known for it's ballads, but this was a party record)
Bad luck - Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes (No comment necessary)

'B'lam, to quote The Brothers Johnson. Let's see you recover from that. Meanwhile, let me work on my 'C's.

    BLAM indeed!

What a cracking set of B's! That Manu Dibango track has always been special for me (1977 of course!! ) - a great mix of funk, African and jazz all on one record! I gather that at the time he was making such brilliant music, he was based in Paris .... Bad Luck - the classic Philly sound - absolutely glorious! I recall one record by Switch but it wasn't that one!

Onto my Bs and Cs - with some help from a certain Mr Muller. Read on....!!

Be Mine Tonight - The Jammers (real powerful 4/4 beat!!)

Bad Girls - Donna Summer (always was my fave DS tune - but only when played LOUD!!)

Brick House - Commodores (an obvious one but I still can't get enough of this record - even after 25 years!!)

And I didn't even have time to mention:
Baby Baba Boogie - Gap Band - I know Blax loves that one!

    Onto my C's :
    Changin' - Brass C (a timeless classic!!)

Call Me - Skyyyy (love that middle bit with just the 4/4 drum beat and the phone call!!)

Circles - Atlantic Starr (their finest moment IMHO - could have done with a TEN MINUTE version of it though!!)

I bet that's got poor old Sammy going round and round in Circles!!

Ouch! 'Circles' is a great song and we both know anything by Randy Muller is top notch; Including stuff from Skyy which is produced by none other than Mr. Muller. So, since we are playing with nothing but the heavyweights, take this:

Cream - Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie (I've always dug this one)
Could heaven ever be like this - Idris Muhammad (A disco classic)
Come go with me - Pockets (Off my top 25 list)

Not enough, then deal with this 'D'estruction,

Dance to the Drummer's beat - Herman Kelly & Life (Still rocks today)
Dreaming a dream - Crown Heights Affair (Once again, off my top 25)
Disco Nights - GQ (#1 on my top 25 list)

I think Jazz is chugging the Bishop's Finger after witnessing this barrage of classics I just hammered him with. Let me see you deal with that.

    Hey Sammy,

One of my punches seems to have hit home at last. Got Sammy going round in Circles!

But he still manages to come back with a couple of decent rounds! Gregg Diamond – he was highly regarded by the cognoscenti of disco fans in this country! Class! How could I have forgotten the Pockets? Disco Night – enough has been said about that track … Crown Heights Affair – another excellent choice! Never heard of Herman Kelly & Life! Could you give me some info, Sammy, please? On home territory, eh Sammy!

    On to my choices:
    Dance Dance Dance – Chic
Do It To The Music – Raw Silk
Disco Lights – Dexter Wansell (a personal fave of mine)

    And to follow up:
Every Which Way But Loose – Oneness Of Juju
Everybody’s Singing Love Songs – Sweet Thunder
Everybody Have A Good Time – Archie Bell And The Drells

That’ll get your Friday rockin’!!!

    Jazz:

I'm sorry I missed your call. However, I am stumped on your 'E's. Even the Archie Bell and the Drells track. I'm going to check if it is on my Rhino compilation of Archie Bell and The Drells. 'Do it to the music' is big to me because once again it is part of the garage movement I was into during my college years. Now to begin my 'E'xecution:

Express - B.T. Express (Growing up in Brooklyn this was big)
Enjoy Yourself - The Jacksons (Rediscovered recently and loving it)
Everybody - Madonna (Her first release is still one my faves of hers)

Still alive, well let me 'F'inish you off with this 'F'antastic list:

Find my way - Cameo (Definitely on the disco side for these guys)
Le Freak - Chic (Awww....Freak out!)
Fantasy - Earth, Wind & Fire (What needs to be said)

A great way to finish the week. This entry and a phone call from you my friend. Thanks again, you made my day.

    Easy,

Glad I made your day! Nice to talk to you on the phone again as well!

I had Express and Enjoy Yourself in my lists - so great taste you have Sammy! I haven't heard that Madonna track in ages, and yes, I do remember it!!

Superb call on the F's - especially Fantasy!! A real fave of mine. I think Le Freak was Atlantic's best selling single ever - at the time in 1979! And Cameo! Love that one as well!

Hope you find that Archie Bell track - it was a great disco favourite over here - Get Up Out Your Seat!!....

Good luck with the wedding reception! And have a great weekend! Catch ya later with some more magical tunes - F's and G's!!!
