    hey disco people,

since my disco CD-Rs prompted some "yay"s and "huh?"s, i thought i'd share my funkier side with some '80s groove tracklistings. like my disco collections, these avoid the tracks that regularly show up on CD compilations, and are drawn mostly from 12"s with a few lp-only tracks thrown in for good measure. enjoy!

SF: You've done it again! The only classic I can see is Oliver Cheatham (a massive disco hit in the UK). Lot's of artists I know of, but just don't know most of the tracks.
Was Red Hot by Herb Alpert really 1980? I always had it about 2 years later in my own mind.

Interesting list sf. Nice to see O'Chi Brown & Millie Scott mentioned as I was mad about these 2 divas around '86/'87 but this is the first time I've seen them mentioned on this site.

I really liked Ochi Brown's "Whenever You Need Somebody" that was later performed by Rick Astley....also, does anyone remember the big club hit (or semi-big) by Millie Scott...it isn't the one mentioned and I still get kind of fuzzy about song names about this time in the 80s - I remember it was very early evening funk and Warren Gluck (Monster) played the hell out of it as I recall....

    hey danceman,

are you thinking of "Prisoner of Love" by Mildred Scott? i'm pretty sure millie and mildred are the same person (i think someone must've suggested ms. scott might sound a little hipper if she modified the mildred!) "prisoner of love" was such a favorite of mine. although "ev'ry little bit" was played on the radio much more in nyc, "prisoner of love" was much bigger in the clubs. she had some other singles, but her voice was much stronger than the other tunes in my opinion. o'chi brown's "fantasy" was a nice short track on the same lp as her original version of the rick astley hit and "100% Pure Pain," which i thought was another pretty one in the same vein as Princess. i might've danced at the monster around this time come to think of it!

    take care,
    barry

My favourite track by Millie Scott was 'Automatic' from the same LP as Prisoner of Love. I was very disappointed though when I bought the LP as it was an edited version & not the atmospheric & hypnotic long version that I'd heard in the discos. Why in the mid-80's did this sart to happen? Prior to that time the LP always had the long version of a single on it in my experience.

Danceman, I too absolutely loved Whenever you Need Somebody by O'Chi Brown & thought it much superior to Rick Astley's version. Stock Aitken Waterman were on a roll at this time producing technically dynamic music that was also commercial & danceable with great romantic lyrics/ strong hooks that made them popular in gay clubs before the onslaught of house in '88/'89.

Thanks Original, Barry and Steely for your input...

The track I remember was definitely PRISONER OF LOVE.....I really had hoped bigger things would happen for Millie (Mildred) from that song, but I guess the small record company was swallowed up by the Giants at the time.....

Also, "100% Pure Pain" is excellent as well as "Whenever...."....too bad that sound couldn't have stuck around a bit longer - but I understand two of the guys split with the third....unless that is just a RUMOUR (sorry, I couldn't resist including my fave from that group)!
