    hello disco people,

i'm relatively new to this forum, and i though i'd introduce myself by posting the track listings some of my recent cd-r compilations. around the beginning of the year i bought a cd recording unit with the intention of compiling the disco/boogie vinyl i've been collecting over the last few years. i ran out of shelf space ages ago, and so i decided to sort my rows of records into yearly groups - one row for '77, one for '78, etc. with the idea that compilations focusing on each year would be the most useful. anyway, here are a few recent examples (all are from the original vinyl, and most are from 12"s):

SF: I'm one of the few non-posers here, so I'll show my total ignorance once again.
Honest evaluation. Never seen 'em, never heard 'em, apart from a few, so to me they are ALL obscure. Are these of a particular genre or just your own eclecticism showing through? We're all fairly eclectic here, much to everyone's credit, although there is a staus quo to whom some are persona non grata.
Goodness me, I can just imagine what a similar board to this dedicated to DANCE MUSIC OF THE '90S will be like in 10 or so years time. It will be an obscure collectors delight.

    Ah Beary Barry....

    Fascinating list!!!!

I don't know a lot of stuff on the early ones...but by 1982..

Slimline!!!! I LOVE that record!!!! Never heard ANYONE else mention it. They played this at Troc (never heard it anywhere else) and I do have a copy...an English import I got at Aloha--was this just for aerobics clases??? Everyone's in leotards on the cover!!!

Love the K.I.D "A Piece Of The Action" too (another Troc song-- an import I got from Aloha Records)--people mention K.I.D. for other songs--but this is my fave.

I have the Carol Douglas and some others too...I gotta go back to look at your lists again!!!!

Would LOVE to hear all your compilations!!!

    Keep on postin'!!!!!

OK, here's some more I know:

"Above & Beyond" (Bobby Viteritti played at
    Troc--mentioned at the 5am site)

"Mondo Disco" (It's El Coco--but I rather like this one--another Troc morning/sleaze classic)

"Sign Of The Times" (Again Viteritti had this on a tape I heard recently)

"Deetour" (Karen Young song was in a medley with a cover of the Soul Survivors classic "Expressway To Your Heart", wasn't it???--the original written & produced by a very young Gamble & Huff--I've got this as home)

"If I Do It To You" by Claudja Barry is another one I have.

I've seen that Mary Wilson "Red Hot" LP all over the place--BUT I never bought it--is the song good??? Poor Mary--always living in the shadow of Miss Ross. ( sidebar: A friend tried to call me a few years ago--misdialed--and got Miss Mary's home and spoke to her personal assistant!!! Now IF I only knew what number Doogie (my old pal) had switched--I could attempt to dish the dirt with Miss Mary about Miss D!!!)

I wonder if there is a way for me to post my interview with Mary Wilson which was held at her press conference at Club, New York, New York in the summer of '79.....

The best thing about her album is Warm Summer Nights, and that is only passable...after hearing her voice, which was kinda smokey and at best, on key, I am not surprised that America didn't embrace her....she was a total bitch during the interview and after we printed it in Michael's Thing - hello, NRG - we were cut off from further press releases about her....what did I miss???? what did I miss???

.....I wonder if her autographed copy of the LP which I own is worth anything.....if not, anyone want this piece of -----?

    hey disco people,

thank you blaxman and markydefad for supporting my mostly obscure choices. most of these passed me by for years, but sound good to me today. mary wilson's "red hot" is no masterpiece, but it was played at the garage, has a certain sleazy mid-tempo r&b charm, is a red vinyl promo, and i think works with the other songs i've selected on that cd-r. "the shoop song" by k.i.d. is the flip of "i wanna piece of the action, and like ago is sassy italian disco funk with "do it" in the refrain. i just noticed "shining star" by the stranger included in sirius's latest playlist, so at least one more discohead is on the same wavelength. (it's a trippy canadian instrumental with lots of percussion and changes throughout its 10 minutes - the kind of thing that would've worked at both the paradise garage AND the trocadero). "doctor kiss kiss" was a top ten pop hit in the uk (and sounds like a very silly combination of boney m and silver convention), so not everything is THAT obscure. as for "pussyfooter" and "sessomatto," these versions go for literally hundreds of $$ on ebay. others can be found readily in bargain bins 'round the world. as for slimline, yes, the uk pressing i have features a posse of singers (models probably!) looking ready to audition for an early cast of *cats*. (it subsequently was released on prelude in the us.)

in my mind the allergy attacks i suffered while searching for these dusty, moldy treasures was worth it.

if anyone has similar compilations, please post them!

    thanks,
    barry

seeing all of these obscure lists, most of the time i don't know any of the songs...but once in awhile i recoginze something. and it does make me go look through my vinyl albums again.such as with carl graves "heart be still".didn't know there was a 12 inch single, but always thought this was a fine soul/pop album, wouldn't mind getting it on cd now. i did notice that "heart be still" was written by lee garrett(not leif), and i have his album too with his own version, both from 1976. i'm going to have to play both of these now. thanks for waking up the memory cells!

    hey california mike,

well, *i* didn't know that carl graves had an lp! i first learned about (and cassette taped) "heart be still" when i did some dog-sitting for a friend of mine with a substantial early disco 7" collection. it took me years to find the graves 7", and then years later i encountered a dj who sold me his copy of the 12", which to the best of my knowledge was only available as a canadian promo. talk about obscure! each side features a longer version that was created through edits. how is the rest of the LP? graves has a pretty great voice, right? i wonder why he disappeared.

    thanks for the info!

Different strokes for different folks. Doctor Kiss Kiss was a record which I was largely unaware of until I saw a 'Top of The Pops 2' show on BBC TV. In England at least, no self respecting club DJ would have touched it.
Now I hear it almost every time I tune into my local radio stations retro Disco show.
Is that what's meant by revenge being sweet?

    Hello SF:

Unfortunately I have heard only three songs from your list:

    Let's Be Young Tonight - Jermaine Jackson -> I have this song on an old tape but luckly downloaded from Audiogaxaly before its death;

    You've Got Magic - Rice & Beans Orchestra -> I still have the TK 12";

Love Me Baby - Shelia B. Devotion -> I also have this song on an old tape but also downloaded from AG.

What can I say these three songs are very good indeed, so I might say that your taste for obscure songs is incredible.

Long life to obscure disco songs.

    Cheers,

    Hi friends

I know some artists from 1976 list but
not the song like THP Orquestra ("Two Hot for Love") and Eddie Kendricks ("Aint't no Smoke Without Fire").

It's very interesting to see here Alice Street Gang, 1976, it's a super rare brazilian disco group from Casablanca records, it's like a bottle lost in the ocean, only the heaven knows it.

Hi Barry: Just a few late comments on your lists....after re-reading it, I realized that a lot of these songs, especially the early ones, were promotionals which I started gathering up when I first got into the "biz".
At the time, I was always hard pressed for deadline time and didn't always have a chance to play everything or give it a lot of recognition....your list is really excellent from the ones I now remember and I bet others that I don't know are wonderful as well....I have that Jermaine Jackson, Let's Be Young Tonight" (a silly title for Jermaine all of 22 at the time, but a really fun '76 dancer) backed with "Down To Love Town," The Originals.....also, thanks for waking me up to some of those early Eddie Kendricks and Carol Douglas' "You're Not So Hot..."...really miss hearing them today.

here is more info on carl graves. again his 1976 album is a fine pop/soul(not disco) collection. he had two top 100 singles on the pop charts, but not from this album. he is from calgary canada. and this was the surprise, he was with the group skylark in 1973, from canada, that had the huge hit "wildflower" (#9). skylark also featured donny gerrard and david foster.
and the trivia keeps going: as mentioned earlier, the writer of "heart be still" was lee garrett, who was the co-writer with stevie wonder of "it's a shame" the first big hit for the spinners!

Hi SF! It's always interesting to see what is considered "obscure". It varies by region (or by country). For example, Jussi (being a European jet-setter and bon vivant) has an encyclopedic knowledge of tracks and artists that I have never heard. Yet, certain records that were popular in NY never hit it big in Europe (i.e., HOTT CITY).

Most of the songs in your list are unknown to me, as well as some of the artists. However, "Mondo Disco" was HUGE in NY, a staple at the end of the hustle era. "Let's Be Young Tonight" may not be remembered very well now, but it was released by Motown as the flip side of The Originals "Down To Love Town" 12 inch, so it received club play at least. The best example of regional differences would be "Love Me Baby" (a favorite of mine). Central New York DJs (Syracuse, Ithaca, etc.) picked up on this as an import in the Fall 0f '77, while NYC DJs and pools didn't really play it until the Spring of '78. I can think of an even better example: "Always And Forever" was a hit in Central NY as soon as CENTRAL HEATING was released (early 1978). It didn't become a "hit" in NYC until late '80-early '81!
    Please keep posting your lists!

Hey! It's like 20 years since the last time I listened to "The Shoop Song".
And certainly I would like to hear the rest... sound pretty obscure for this "punter" and that means interesting!
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

    Oh, Barry,

I wish I could travel out to San Fran and hang with you, Marky and Keefe while you play all that stuff you're listing. I missed so much of the earlier disco promos (pre '77) because I wasn't a member of a record pool. I might know more songs than I realize on your list if I hear them. But, most of the titles are new, and news, to me which is always intriguing.

It's nice to have you on the board. Sounds like you were here once before and this is a return trip for you. Good news for all of us.
