Girls, I want to hear all about your trip.

Who got drunk, who stole who's boyfriend, Beach Blanket Babylon (maybe you'll see Mrs. Madrigal there),The Castro Street Fair, what cool records you found, etc, etc.

Don't forget to pack those condoms.

maybe it's just bad PR or something, but the Castro Street Fair/market was on an English TV show the other night and what a load of sad freaks!!!!!!! So many of the people shown just looked totally out to lunch and so tacky.
I really don't know why so many people in today's society imagine that outrageous behaviour or outlandish dressing makes them interesting or special or different. A uniform is a uniform is a uniform. Get a load of people together, all with the same basic look and whadaya get. Different looking sheep.

Excuse me? The Castro Street Fairs that I've gone to usually has a whole cast of characters, both gay and straight, all getting along to spend a lovely day in the City together.

Let's not forget that the media, especially outside of the Bay Area, will normally only show what they think will grab their viewer's attention. So, of course, you're probably going to see the stuff that doesn't truly represent what you would see in person.

Did I mention Gay? I said they ALL looked sad. Just like a room full of ageing hippies playing air guitar to an ageing rock band looks pretty sad from the OUTSIDE. WE'RE all guilty.

Steely: Perhaps I should have put that line in quotation marks. What I meant was, it's the people who dress to shock who are shouting "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME", not moi. Although even I am accused of dressing loud occasionally.

I have this image of Marky, Jeff & co being like the girls from Sex & The City when they hit SF. I feel there will be lots of ups & downs, & I'm not talking about the hills!

    Steely Dan--

Funny you should mention the gals from "Sex and the City": Marky and I had this discussion before the trip and I said he had to be Carrie. I claimed Samantha (I'll leave it up to you to figure out why...), and my partner Bob reluctantly agreed that he was most like Miranda. So Keefe became Charlotte by default--although I don't know if he was ever made aware of it!

Marky went back to L.A. on Monday, but I'm still in SF 'til next Tuesday; just checking mail, etc. from Bob's sister's house then off to happy hour.

I'm eager to read what Marky and Keefe have to say about our visit and I'll have more to say when I have more time, assuming anyone is really interested.

As for Quinny's disparaging remarks about the Castro Street Fair, let me quickly say that I don't know what he saw, but this year's fair was warm, sunny, friendly and fun. Yes there were plenty of drag queens, and probably some aging hippies too. But I've rarely seen a happier, livelier, more festive group of people--gay and straight--partying together.

I've seen much uglier, grosser and more stupid behavior on TV in the crowd at football games.

Greetings from SF! (Have you recovered, Marky?!)

I don't know Jeff, Marky and I changed our opinion after seeing Bob's, shall we say, provocative shorts on Sunday! I think he's Samantha, you're Carrie, Mark is Miranda and, yes, I would have the Charlotte role. Sigh...
However, didn't it really feel like "Sex & the City - SF!" as we sat in Mel's Diner having lunch and talking about that one particular photo??! Bob was giving us a lesson about pumps and a particular part of one's anatomy, all in a family atmosphere! Just like the show!

Anyway, I loved meeting Jeff and Bob and seeing Mark again (it's been much too long)! Extremely warm and personable people. Plus, those two almost know this City better than I do.

As for the Castro Street Fair, this year seemed a little subdued. However, that may have had alot to do with the hideous heat wave we had for the last couple of days. It actually hit 91 degrees yesterday in SF and no fog to be found. The entertainment on the main stage was something left to be desired. A little group by the name of MDO, formerly Menudo (they still exist??!), was suppose to be the highlight. Marky and I took that opportunity to go to Amoeba Records. We left Jeff and Bob with their contigency at the Edge!

Forgot to mention, all four of us went to Beach Blanket Babylon on Friday. Mark and I both saw incarnations of this show back in the 80s, so we were a little worried that the current version would be a little too commercial and tailored to the tourists.

Not so! The show is just a entertaining as we remembered (right Mark?), if not more so. Couple of really great singers (I would buy their record if they had one), great dancers and fabulous costumes. For those of you planning to visit SF, don't miss out on this SF institution! By the way, be sure to get tickets in advance. Our 7 pm show was completely sold out and the theater had a line for the second late performance.

(For the record: I had no intention of documenting the trip to SF AND I thought WE ALL agreed on that...BUT, since Jeff asked and Keefe responded, I guess I'll play along....)

Well...I am amazed that anyone here actually cares what happened in SF--BUT, I've been back in LA for about 24 hours...so let's see if I can reflect and encapsulate what transpired in my four day weekend.

I arrived in SF at around 2:30PM Friday after driving to LAX, taking a shuttle from parking lot C, checking in, waiting an hour and 1/2 for the plane to board (Hey, everyone told me to be two hours early!!!), flying to SF, deplaning, taking a shuttle bus from the airport to the BART station, taking BART to downtown SF, and finally catching the Castro trolley down Market to Beck's Motor Lodge. Whew!!! ----under the river and through the hood--I'm pooped!!!!

Jeff had thoughtfully left a message for me at the desk with their room number on it, so I went to my room and unpacked and then went up to Jeff & Bob's room. No one home. So, I took a stroll down Market & Castro to see what was old and what was new.

I made my way back to the brothel, ... er...motel and went to J&B's room again. This time the room was occupado!!! I finally met Jeff (my cyber-sister) who I've been chatting with on-line for nearly a year (thanks to this site--it all began because of Donna Summer and those Billboard charts!!!)...and the until now-elusive Bob, who I nicknamed Silent Bob cause he'd NEVER respond to my e-mails even when I addressed him directly!!! It became a little running joke between Jeff and myself.

Anyway, after I shrieked "He Speaks!!!" we played "getting to know you" and chatted while we ran a few errands in their rental car. Jeff also gifted me with 2 CD's he'd "burned" for me featuring cuts I'd mentioned I didn't know here in my postings--more on that later, when I get a chance to fully listen.

Then, we assembled with Keefe and went to "Beach Blanket Babylon". It was bright outside so I wore my dark glasses and put my regular glasses (LA Eyeworks, i.e EXPENSIVE!!!!) in my back pocket, When we arrrived at BBB, I went to change my glasses and--QUELLE SURPRISE!!!--sure enough, I cracked the lens by sitting on them with my fat ass!!!! I put them on to see if I could watch the show and it resembled the famous shot from the silent Russian film "Potemkin" with the guy looking up and the lens of one of his glasses shattered. So, on go the dark glasses...ah well, I guess that's the LA way, right???

The show, which I first saw in 1975 at this same theater in North Beach is a frantically paced musical revue centering on Snow White leaving SF to travel round the world in search of her Prince. Campy songs and hilarious costumes and one-liners ensue. We had a great, gay old time...(or so we all said).

Then we drove back to the Castro in search of food. We decided on a restaurant right near the old Aloha Records (now a porno shop--Jeff says they don't have much up there!!!) Seated at a table adjacent to us was Mr. "Tales of The City", Armistead Maupin, himself....J&B were tres excited!!! To Keefe and I, it was like spotting Sylvester at another street fair!!!! Been there, done that. During dinner, the conversation became very Discomusic.com-oriented and I felt sorry for Bob, who is adorable, BTW, and such a good sport to amiably listen to this inane chatter from 3 disco queens about who said what at this site!!!

We finished dinner and walked back to Beck's and called it a night (Well, at least I did). Beck's sorta resembled an old West brothel with the girls (guys) standing outside their rooms on the 2 balconies outside the 3-story motel, looking for "love" in all the wrong places!!!!

Saturday, Bob went to the East Bay for a family gathering, leaving Jeff and I to go shopping for Disco!!! We hit all the shops on Market with the ultimate plan of going over to Haight Street for an Amoeba Records trip. We perused and commented on and gathered and put-back, lotsa stuff. Eventually, it was getting late...so we cancelled Amoeba and had a late lunch at Bagdad Cafe on Market. We returned to our rooms, Bob returned from the East Bay, and they invited me to hit their favorite bar, The Edge, over on 18th for Happy Hour. Inside the bar, we saw someone resembling the late Al Parker in his "Jesus phase"--Jeff, old eagle-eye, spotted him later that evening also, but sniffed that "faux Al" was talking to all the wrong people, i.e. NOT JEFF (I guess!!!!) (I also spotted Lex Kyler on Friday and Matthew Rush, Jason Tyler and Jack Ryan at the Falcon booth at the Fair on Sunday).

The Edge was playing some old disco when we first arrived.."Street Life", "True Love Is My Destiny" come to mind...then the music switched to generic new stuff. After a couple beers, I wanted to check out the videos at the Midnight Sun, so I excused myself and wandered over there. I watched the Saturday comedy festival for about an hour when J&B came in and we all watched for one more beer....then they got bored...so we went to Marcello's for a slice of pizza (Jeff's Theory: eat greasy food to absorb the alcohol!!!)

We were eating our pizza in the window when a guy comes in and gives a card to Bob and asks if he's single, cause a friend of his wants to meet him. Bob sweetly thanks him but motions to Jeff and says they're a couple. The guy leaves...only to have the actual guy who made the request (A DOCTOR, or so she said) come in and apologize and flirt. Bob says he's flattered and thanks the guy for his interest but "no thanks".

We walk back to the brothel and I quiz J&B about situations like that and how they handle them, etc. I check out the second half of a VH1 MOW with Jennifer Beals titled "They Shoot DIVAS, Don't They?" cause I have a client and good friend in it. It's sorta "All About Eve" crossed with "Play Misty For Me"--stylish but forgettable.

I'm gonna stop and post this before I lose it....

    Ok...let's continue....

Well, now it's 11:30 on a hot Saturday night in SF and I'm tempted to just go to bed--BUT I dutifully put my boots ("they're made for walking") on and hit the streets. I start crossing Market outside Beck's and there's Bob and the afore-mentioned spurned "doctor" walking towards me...I say "quelle surprise" and Bob retorts 'Piggo"!!!!!????? What???

(For the record: NOTHING happened--they just talked; and Bob kept walking him around the block until Mr. M.D. got the message that it NOTHING was gonna happen. Is that clear???)

I wander back to the Castro and some of the bars are so hot inside (remember no air-conditioning in SF) that I can't get past the entrance. I eventually end up back at the Midnight Sun where later I spot the "doctor" leaving with some other guy, definitly not as hot as Bob. Well, ya gotta give the "doc" props for not taking "No" for an answer...or do you????

I get bored and proceed back to the brothel. J&B are out and about.

Sunday, I meet Keefe for the Castro Street Fair and we wander around in the 90+ degree heat--eventually spotting J&B in front of their bar, The Edge. Bob has on his "slutty shorts" with a huge tear over the left asscheek. Bob is wearing NO underwear; apparently, these are his Castro Street Fair shorts--pulled out once a year for this event---OR SO HE SAYS!!!!

Keefe and I wander all over and eventually decide to drive over to Amoeba Records at around 5:00PM. We shop and I actually buy a few things: the new Natalie Cole, the CD issue of Dionne Warwick's "Track Of The Cat", "Magnum Opus 2", and "Larry Levan's Classic West End Records Remixes Made Famous at the Legendary Paradise Garage". Keefe gets one of the Dimitri In Paris CD's and one of the Jane Monheit CD's and some other stuff I don't recall.

We then drive back to Market Street and have a cocktail at Mecca-- a trendy bar/eatery with 2 drag performers--Mamie Van Gorgeous who does an energetic French-type number and then, Miss Edie, (resembling Ileanna Douglas/Lisa Kudrow in a very 1966 brunette Suzanne Pleshette-type wig and wearing a black mini) lip-synching Lulu's cover of Neil Diamond's "The Boat That I Row" (the B-side of "To Sir With Love") with lotsa "rowing motion" choreography!!!!

We dine at Chows on Church Street and, both pretty exhausted from all the sun and walking around all day--call it a night. This night was soooo HOT, sleeping is a real bitch. I toss & turn all night long...get up at 7:00AM, shower and pack.

    It's 8:30AM and I'm ready to go!!!!!!

I wander the streets and come back to the room...Bob calls and we make plans for lunch at Mel's Diner, where Keefe will meet us and drive me to the airport. We start discussing photos of the Dore Alley Fair that were prominently displayed in the window of a porno shop on Market. The guy in the photos has what appeared to me as silicone injected into his privates, making for an enormously THICK schwantz/schlong--BUT Bob says this swollen appendage was from "pumping"!!! Please pass me that pump, baby!!!

We lunch...say our goodbyes and Keefe drives me to the Oakland airport. Danny Glover (drop that name!!!) is on the flight to LA and in that first row that sits facing the rest of the passengers!!! No first class on this Southwest flight!!!

I arrive in LA at around 5:30--and that's about it.

So you can see--I was no slut--I guess 18 years of LA life has drained the SF Slut out of me!!!! Or maybe I'm just so out of practice--I didn't know where to begin!!!

    Sorry....NO DIRT!!!!

But, Jeff & Bob may NOT disappoint you in that area...they were always prowling back out after we said good night, I suspect!!!

Ok, now Jeff can tell HIS version....Will this be a "Rashomon"???? Stay tuned....

ONE REGRET: I didn't get a chance to hook up with sfbeary; Sorry, I didn't call...I ran outta time until Monday morning and then I figured it was too late. Next time???

Ileana Douglas and Lisa Kudrow?? Now that's a combination that would deflate anyone's dick.

"Miss Edie" or Miss Eydie" (I'm not sure if she was paying homage to Edie Adams or Eydie Gorme'!!!) was a most fetching and energetically volatile performer. She "rowed" her little heart out in the brief time "The Boat That I Row" was spinning. She was non-stop motion "crossing that ocean". I was most entertained.

Sound like u guyz had the most enjoyable time! I've also eaten at Bagdad Cafe on market street! The waiter who served us was so cute & flirtatious; not unusual for the Castro I s'pose! BTW, is/was Lulu very big in the U.S.?

Yup, Danceman, the Castro has changed quite a bit, especially in the last few years. Elephant Walk is now Harveys, which had to be recently remodeled after a fire. Badlands is now all chrome, tv monitors and glitz as they removed the pool tables and added a dancefloor! Castro Street Station is now The Bar On Castro. Diesel just opened up at the former Bank Of America site on Market and Castro. However, the Castro Theater, Cliff's Hardware and the Sausage Factory still remain.

The music scene tries to appeal to the younger crowds, with a slant towards the divas. However, as you move away from the Castro, you'll find the music more electic. For example, Mecca (where Marky and I saw Mamie Van Gorgeous and Miss Edie), which is more towards Market and Church will into more of the older jazzier & lounge grooves (since it's a bar and a restaurant).

    Oh, my gawd, Marky!!!

It's a good thing you didn't stay longer than one weekend--there is just not enough bandwidth (or whatever) at this site for a longer recap!

But I must admit that I LOL'ed big time when I read your "Potemkin" description of your broken glasses. Perfect!

As for our "Sex and the City" who's who, I guess I would also make a good Carrie since I'm a writer too, but I think it's safe to say that I did my best Samantha in SF as well. (Btw: A very friendly guy moved into your room after you checked out. Actually there was no shortage of friendly guys at the hotel...)

And Keefe: I wouldn't be upset about being Charlotte. She's a total sweetheart and so are you. To everyone else: Keefe is friendly and lively and interested in everything you have to say... what a great guy!

And I think some of you might be surprised about the Real Marky, but I don't know if I should say anything that might affect the Marky Mystique.

(Btw: Personally, I would MUCH rather be the gals on "Sex and the City" than those boring charicatures on "Queer aZZZ Folk.")

As for Marky's comment about the Al Parker wannabe talking to "the wrong people" (your words), what I said (or meant) was that Faux Al could have done better than any of the rather average guys I saw him trying to pick up. And if you think that translates to "pick me, pick me," well, you're probably right, dammit. (I never did see him after that first weekend; maybe he was a visitor too.)

And excuse me, Mr. Jaded! It was kind of a thrill to see a Famous San Francisco Author at the next table in a restaurant. It was even more fun to drink and dish with him for three hours one night at our favorite bar the following week. Not that I know anything about the next Tales miniseries, or the casts of the previous ones, or can drop names about who's gay, or who's a bitch, or who has a big dick, or who slept with Al Parker. Nope. Not me. I don't know nuthin'.

Well, I have a mountain of mail, elctronic and otherwise, on my desk. More later...

Jeff, glad to hear you and Bob made it home safe and sound! You did hear about the shooting mid way during the second week you were here, didn't you? Pretty close to where you were staying (I think it was in front of the Baghdad Cafe)!

I want to know what you found at Amoeba (if anything)???

Finally, as for Mr. Maupin, jaded we are not! It's simply that he's spotted everywhere (and I mean everywhere!). However, I, for one, want to know what you were able to pry out of him.

Okay, gotta run! Carol Channing is autographing at Books Inc. tonight which is the bookstore under Aloha Records' former second store (now Muscle System). Now if you ran into her at the Edge...!

    Keefe,

Don't hold your breath. I've asked for the gossip items several times and all that's been revealed is:

    1) Ben Affleck is gay.

    2) Scientologists have Tiny Tom Cruise on tape (doing what I don't exactly know--having gay sex, I presume).

That's the sum total of gossip I've been been able to pry. This stuff I could have read, or DID read, in the tabloids. Ah, well. Never fear, I always share my dirt with y'all.

    Yes Jeffy,

I WAS on the RAG the day I wrote that post. It was an ultra-heavy flow day.

I'm better now, thank-you very much.

Well Mark, I happy to say that Jeff came through with some great gossip for me from Mr. Maupin (Thanks Jeff!)!

I'll be chatting with both of you more later but, now, I gotta run!
