Here's a group not often mentioned 'round here but made me look forward to the spring and summer of the '70s. I'm talking about the Isley Brothers. OK, I'll select two styles. Uptempo, I choose "Fight The Power." My ballad selection is "For The Love Of You."

Well Paul, I'm a big fan of the Isley Brothers also...LOVE Ronald Isley's voice...

I would pick the exact same 2 songs you did ("Fight The Power" & "For The Love Of You")--BUT to keep it interesting, I'll mention a few runner-up choices:

    "It's Your Thing" (1969)
"This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)" - Their one Motown Holland-Dozier-Holland classic!!! (1966)
    "That Lady" (1973)
    "Harvest For The World" (1976)
    and "Between The Sheets" (1983)

Sorry to mention so many...BUT there's still lots more hits to choose from.
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

I'm going to have to go "pre-disco" and say "Got To Have You Back". Explosive energy, like Brenda Holloway's "Just Look What You've Done". TAMLA --- kicking butt!

Best from the Isley Brothers? Easy...

Successfully suing Michael Bolton for $5.4 million for ripping off "Love is a Wonderful Thing".

Hearing this news was one of the sweetest sounds to ever grace my ears. Perhaps there is justice, after all.

Bolton neatly encapsulates so much of what is wrong with the music industry today: unoriginal, untalented, uninspiring, and unlistenable pablum for the brain-dead and brainwashed masses to listen to, brought to you by MOR format radio -- "where we only play what our advertisers want to hear". He is the poster boy for corporate pop, a cornucopia of mediocrity, and a stunning example of how the right marketing can sell almost any dreck (see also: KENNY G). The fact that this guy has won Grammy Awards is all the proof you need that the industry has no integrity.

The sad part of this is that the Isley Brothers are so far in debt that they won't get any of the money after all is said and done.

Graham, you talk alot of sense. I'm so pleased other people see through all the hype & industry crap. I sometimes think the whole world's going mad when acts like Mr.Bolton are so successful. Strangely, he's even more irritating (if thats possible) since he cut his silly hair off.

I agree with you Graham and Steely. Perhaps we are a bunch of old fuddy duddies. This is not just to pick on Mr Bolton. When I listen to what passes for R&B, god help us (and I'm atheist?).
I wonder sometimes if this crap will stand the test of time.

One record by the Isley Bros. that I really feel is their disco claim-to-fame (but often overlooked) is "Inside of You," which never made the pop charts but was a crowd pleaser wherever I went and heard it played...another fave of mine is "It's A Disco Night (Rock Don't Stop) from 1979....they are just an incredible group who will never get the regard in the music world they so rightly deserve....

Wow the Isley Brothers have many songs that I can list as favorites, but I'm gonna keep it short and sweet.

    1.Say It Again Girl
    2.Don't Say Goodnight (?)
    3.Footsteps In The Dark

Paul, I've been extremely busy with school and working overtime so I'm TOO tired to chat. As I'm typing, I'm dosing off at the computer so I'll be back when I have some more energy.

hey nicknack, it was nice to see brenda holloway mentioned. sometime we'll have to start a discussion about her.

for the isley's: of course "this old heart of mine" and "caravan of love". but there is also a somewhat newer album cut that caught my attention, "stay gold".

Paul, I also can't believe what passes for RnB these days. I spent years campaigning for black music to get more recognition, & now that its got success, it sucks (for the first time that I can remember!)

    Interesting point, Steely Dan...

After decades of great black music that couldn't get radio exposure and thus, barely dented the pop charts and faded into oblivion...

NOW...black music dominates the pop charts...and it all SUCKS!!!!!

"That Lady" (1973) was a disco-oriented song, and I am also partial to "Work To Do" (1972) and "This Old Heart Of Mine" (1966).
