Brilliant list! I recently found that Wardell Piper track 'Captain Boogie' on 12". Its a seriously funky but still very disco track isnt it?
...ya gotta beat the street......
i like to mix 'em up. Capain Boogie is a good disco / funk crossover track and usually works with both kind of crowds at the right moment. glad you like the list!
PhyllisH - getting a burner soon. All I need then will be the time to do it. I will make it a project.
P.V.,
I wish you were spinning somewhere closer to LA than Hong Kong!!!! I'd drop by to move to the very tasty grooves you've chosen. What type of crowd are you playing for? Is it a retro party for younger types or nostalgia for the aging Disco Bunnies of Hong Kong???
I would guess the latter--cuz the kidz today gots ta have the hip-hop-rap-crap or no-vocals-please-jackhammer-techno--or they can't get their groove on. OR is it a "kewl" thing on Hong Kong to appreciate '70's stuff????:
I AM Curious...(I almost typed a color..(title of an old foreign film)...BUT VERY un-p.c. considering the subject of this post!!!

Peanut: Interesting list. You say you like to mix 'em up and that shows. It's good to see a list that goes through virtually the whole gamut of Disco sounds. It's the sort of thing I would have done all those years ago, but even funky old me wouldn't have been allowed to stay funky for so long, before people really wanted to shake their rumps.
Did you play them in this order, or was this a list to be added to / taken away from, as the night dictated? Just interested to know.
Guys: I put that crate together last week for what I would call a 'saturday' crowd, rather than my more eclectic 'monday' set which runs anything from Blue Gardenia to Band of Gypsys, the stylistics, johhny guitar watson, el coco etc etc. In Hong Kong I play regularly mondays in a very cool bar called one fifth the crowd is just that - cool - quite international very wallpaper magazine. They appreciate my music because the kind of music that i know and love sounds incredibly contemporary now, presented intelligently. I dont like the 'flares and afro' approach to our music that one sees - because that was not how it was/is for me. Our music was the epitome of cool at the time and I beleive it retains the ability to express that attitude and get that respect from a modern crowd.
I played my regular monday gig last night but because today is 'national day' and a public holiday in Hong Kong the place was packed like a Saturday so I got to play my 'saturday set' to a more dance oriented crowd : Cher, Astrud Gilberto, T-connection, Vince Montana - all a hit on the dancefloor. To freak them out I went out of 'superjock' by Vince Montana into Suzy Q by Jose Feliciano - awesome reaction form a yound ish mixed fashionable crowd.
I dont play my stuff in the order of the list I posted- although if you did it would all work as a sequence - that's just how they sit in the crate - and I do have a bunch of stuff on CD to supplement my vinyl.
hey, if youre in the hong kong neighbourhood on any given monday let me buy you a cosmopolitan !!
I'll believe what you say, although from a purely personal perspective I can't understand why anyone would associate Disco with 'cool'. I used to sweat my bollocks off!!!
a room full of no shirts people getting crazy seems pretty cool to me !!
Superb post! Fab! That's the way it was and that's the way IT IS. The more cutting edge the venue is, the more knowledgeable the crowds are, the more they appreciate well-spinned disco sets. Now, let's hope the Seattle expo people do not fall in the flares&afro trap come November the 23th...On 2002-10-01 06:51, PeanutVendor wrote:

see what I mean - check out our honorable mention in Travel + Leisure [thanks to John G for spotting it and bringing it to my attention.]
STAR STREET
Star Street in Wanchai has become the hippest dining destination in Hong Kong. Head to Cinecittà (G/F Starcrest, 9 Star St.; 852/2529-0199; dinner for two $100) to sample pistachio-crusted rack of lamb, plus decadent tiramisù. Request a prime people-watching spot at the raised bar in the center of the room, surrounded by wall-sized Fellini stills. Next door at Kokage (Starcrest, 9 Star St.; 852/2529-6138; dinner for two $100), make your way past jet-setters huddled on bright red banquettes to a booth and indulge in light Japanese fusion dishes such as sliced hamachi with blood orange—and—pomelo vinaigrette. The dessert tempura, a fried ball of macadamia-nut chocolate, is a favorite. Upstairs, you'll find the intimate lounge at One-Fifth (9 Star St.; 852/2520-2515), where a parade of Beautiful People grooves to a sound track of new funk and old soul.

Very nice playlist. I love the mixing up of styles. I was more interested in your answer to Quinny's question about the list being played in order or if you had supplements. Glad you said the latter. Too many wannabees were coming into clubs in the 80's with fixed lists and fixed minds. They didn't have a clue what to do if the crowd didn't get into what they thought was 'ultra hot'. Of course, they thought a bad floor reaction meant the crowd was 'lame', not that they couldn't think out of the box.
BTW, are you living in Hong Kong? Did you go there for this club? Not trying to get into your biz, just curious as to why you're jamming so far away.
Wishes for continued success.

Nicky
Hi Nicky - to answer your question I have been spinning music in Hong Kong for 30 years. I just got back into a once a week thing for my own sanity, and since I still have all the music - why not. I am playing tonight in fact. I plan to have some fun with Paul Simpson Connection's 'Reprise Me' and I might just throw in No Nos Parraran by Charranga 76, hey come to think of it I am pretty sure tonight is the night for Round and Round by Chill-Factorr also!!
If youre ever in town.....
