I just read that Valerie Jones of the singing sister trio The Jones Girls died earlier this month. With her sisters Brenda and Shirley, The Jones Girls recorded for several small labels before arranger Gil Askey hired them to sing back-up for Miss Diana Ross. That gig led them to being signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records in the late 1970's. At Philly Intl., they recorded 4 albums, which included the hits "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else", "Nights Over Egypt" (recently covered by Incognito), and "At Peace With Woman". They left Philly for RCA in the early 1980's but never regained their hit-making status. As background singers, they sang on Linda Clifford's "If My Friends Coud See Me Now" and Phyllis Hyman's "Can't We Fall In Love Again".

Mark, thanks for letting us know. Another loss to the music industry. I've always considered the Jones Girls to have one of the more distinctive harmonies. You could usually tell it was them. They were another group of underrated singers and one of the things that Miss Ross did right was to hire them as her backup singers for some of her live concerts. The "At Peace With Woman" album is a classic!

Sad news indeed. Thanks for letting us know. BTW, Rinder & Lewis employed them for the the vocals on their classic "Le Spank" LP (as "Le Pamplemousse").

Thanks for sharing that Markey. Wow! Any mention of the cause of death?

I have many memories attached to a couple of their hits.
    Find them and destroy them!

    Paul,

I can't find any cause of death listed in any of the obits; just that she was 45 and was considered the "quiet one". Some sources spell her first name Valorie, others Valerie.
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

That was so untimely...at 45:( Rest in eternal peace Valerie, for your voice will be forever graced and cherished.
