Well, back from a short lived hiatus is our favorite topic
Let's get back in the groove with Rose Royce.
My pick has to be "Wishing On A Star."

My favourite is R.R. ExPRESS from '82, as for their best hmmmm........
CAR WASH because it set their style for many a year to come, was innovative for its time and hey lets be honest, who'd have thought you could have a massive hit record (and film) singing about a car wash?
    It does it for me.

I have not listened to lots of songs from Rose Royce but the only 2 songs I've listened from her are: "Wishing On A Star" & Car Wash".

    Great songs!

to have started with "car wash", and then be able to do "ooh boy", "wishing on a star" and "love don't live here anymore" is pretty amazing!! but my favorite is still "is it love you're after"(12 inch version), and this was in my top ten of the recent top 25 we submitted. combining the lushness of the three ballads above with a funky dance beat and swirling strings was perfect.

Well, ballad-wise.... I like several of the tunes already mentioned, "Ooh Boy", & "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" and several that haven't-- "I Wanna Get Next To You" and "I'm Goin' Down" come to mind....BUT the best ballad is "Wishing On A Star".

Dance-wise...two come to mind the heavy-duty funk workout "R.R. Express" and the lighter, jazzy "Still In Love".

I AM NOT a fan of "Car Wash".

I have to agree with Marky, 'Still in Love' was such a brilliant & under-rated track. Also, 'Best Love' from the same LP was also very good. I think they improved after Gwen Dickie left as singer, not that I don't like her.

Since I can't decide between these particular songs of theirs, I'll go with all three: "Car Wash", "Ooh Boy", and "Wishing On A Star".

Fierce group! For the longest time I had "Wishing On a Star" at the top of my list. But eventually "Still In Love" replaced that spot for me. This is just a first-rate smooth jazz/dance piece. Hell, I played this for an AT&T crowd and even they were interested. (Normally into 'corporate top 10', you know how it goes.)

Of course, if you're going for 'the jam', then "Car Wash" is all that, and more!

Do Your Dance is my all-time favorite because it was so funky. It wasn't played to death at the club the way Car Wash was. And Car Wash got ruined for me by the straight guy I danced with who could NOT dance and would imitate someone washing a car every time the line said "Work and work." I died of embarassment! Strangely enough, he went on to become a ballroom dance instructor after getting me ballroom dancing lessons for my twenty-first birthday!

I never heard of either one of these. Someone said R.R. Express came out in 1982. Hmmmm.

    Hi Paul!

I'll have to go with "Love Don't Live Hear Anymore" and "I Wanna Get Next To You".

    Hi Leanmean,

When you heard "Do Your Dance" in the clubs, did they play it all the way to the end, past that part with the electronic sweep?

As a dj, this is what I heard:

I always found that break annoying as the sweep was badly equalized, causing the highs to actually hurt. Also, the beat wasn't synched, causing the tempo to pitch up. Coming out of the break, the song 'fell' back to it's original speed. The tempo dropped like a bomb.

As a dancer, did you feel this or was I being too fussy? I just remember the crowd at Peter Rabbit not handling the ending very well.

Oh ****! Paul, I'm sorry. My question to Leanmean just tears your thread apart. I'm trying to remember 'message board' etiquette . Hope you don't mind.

My fave that wasn't really played a lot was "Is It Love You're After..." - I thought the horn interplay was so exciting....Also, their Epic release with "Best Love," and "Still in Love," on it - that is SO DIFFICULT to find and it is on a huge label that is still in existence....go figure!

    Damn Nicky, you fucked up!
Nah...jus' kiddin'. I actually like it when, every so often the topic goes off on a tangent. It's more real and a good way to find out something different.

I will go with "Is It Love You're After" - a glorious tune.

But I would also like a special mention for "Magic Touch" from around '85, as it was MASSIVE in London at the time.

Nice to see some of the Seventies bands having success in the Eighties with some decent music!

Honourable mention for 'It Makes You Feel Like Dancing' - another really strong dance floor filler.

My favorite Rose Royce song is "I Wanna Get Next To You". Not a disco song, but it's my all-time favorite by them.

    J_P,

What album is RR's "Magic Touch" from? I remember getting a promo of Loose Ends' "Magic Touch". That was very nice. Wondering if these are the same or just coincidence.

Probably is coincidence. I don't know the Loose Ends track!

I have the Rose Royce track on a Streetwave double LP compilation. I will get the record out tonight and will give you more details then.

"Magic Touch" was from Rose Royce's 1984 LP "Music Magic".

Having done some resaearch it looks like the record escaped most peoples' attention in the USA.

But London was a different story - "Magic Touch" was easily as massive as The Fatback Band's "I Found Lovin'" and Cheryl Lynn's "Encore". I particularly remember the whole of the "Best Disco In Town" in London's Lyceum heavin' to that Rose Royce track - a fantastic atmosphere! By 1984, the "Best Disco In Town" was run by Horizon Radio/JFM (pirate soul stations) rather than Capital Radio as in the late Seventies. But still an awesome night, all the same!!

Paul: thank you for including Rose Royce, they are among my favorite bands of all time. And I am so very pleased to see so many responses to this thread as you don't hear much (of) Rose Royce anymore. Undeserved IMHO.

Marky and Jazz: as usual... respect to you. You picked some of my favs.

"Still in love" with that more than awesome piano solo... and that heavy base... ouch! Heavenly. I saw them live in Amsterdam at the time their "Stronger than ever" album came out (which has the "Still in love" track on it) and to hear this song being played live was absolutely fabulous.

And "Magic touch" is one of the great 'undiscovered' ones. If I remember correctly it was a Nick Martinelli production and/or remix. The album is called "Music magic" and can be found on CD (at least I found it here in Japan).

In the same vein, we should mention "Love me right now" which is very similar to "Magic touch".

Two other great Rose Royce 'sleeper' albums are "Perfect lover" and "Fresh cut". Both are 80's releases. From "Perfect lover" please listen to and fall in love with "All I want to do" and "Green light".

Back to selecting the best Rose Royce song ever... eehmmm... OK: "Best love".
