I have an idea for a movie. These are the songs I would want on its soundtrack.

    1. Get on Up (Get on down) -Roundtree
    2. Bounce,Rock,Skate, Roll -V. Mason and Crew
    3. Hi Tension - Hi Tension
    4. Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me - Peter Brown
    5. Shame - Evelyn King
    6. I've Just Begun To Love You -Dynasty
    7. Shake Your Body (Remix version) -Jacksons
    8. The Breaks- Kurtis Blow
    9. I like what you're Doing To Me- Yonung and Co
    10. Come To Me- France Joli
    11. In The Bush - Musique

Also I Will Survive and There But for the Grace of God Go I would be used, sung by the lead female.

Any idea as to what it could cost to license these titles?

I recently watched a film called 'Kiss Me Guido' which was brilliant & set in NYC. It wasn't about disco & was set in the 90's I think but contained lots of brilliant disco tracks, mainly from 1979 (my favourite year, music-wise) including 'There But for the Grace of god go I' by Machine & 'Mandolay' by La Flavour.
I found this film much better than recent films about disco like '54' & 'Last days of Disco'. I highly recommend it!

Whit Stillman - the outstanding director of Last days of Disco, Barcelona - the ost of which also contained disco tracks - plus Metropolitan complained that it was very difficult securing the rights for the cuts heard on "Last Days..". You could try Rhino, they currently own quite a few titles one would consider desirable. Polygram also has a few and is apparently easier to deal with. You say a movie - are we talking about a professionally produced real motion picture with a real distribution or festival screenings plan or just an idea for one?

Jim: I don't have specific information, but I reckon you could count on an arm and a leg.
All you can do is contact the licensing/special product sections of the relevant record labels. Don't forget you'd have to pay hefty mechanical copyright fees too. So far as I know, record labels and or writers/composers of tunes can ask for stupid sums of money as there is no standard fee.

    Jim,

I'm assuming this is a "dream" at this point and you're just speculating...So, IF you haven't actually written the script and secured an agent...the "songs" on the soundtrack should be the least of your concerns.....BUT, I'd say millions would be spent to secure those exact titles...and even then you probably would have to substitute second choices in some cases.

It all depends on who owns the rights...if some are jointly owned by the same publisher/label maybe you could get a package deal. There are people at the studios who do nothing but secure the rights and place songs in movies....this is a BIG business. Also, unfortunately, it's usually the director who makes the first song choices...SO even if you wrote in your script that a certain song plays at a certain moment...IF the director or Miramax had other ideas...your song would be replaced with their choice.

I'm sorry...BUT that's the way it USUALLY goes. Paul Thomas Anderson titled his movie "Boogie Nights"--BUT because that song had been used in another movie that had been released a little earlier...Karyn Rachtman (I think) the person in charge of securing the licensing his movie...played him a tape of other choices. "Best Of My Love" by The Emotions was chosen....and was thrilling as the opening song, IMHO.
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

thanks, Marky, for finally answering the question about Boogie Nights....I could never figure out why that song would NOT have appeared in the film of the same name...especially since it was about the era that the song was set in.....makes sense now....too bad, though, that being the case, the movie producers didn't opt for another title to the film which coulda matched up a like song from that era - Heart of Glass woulda fit, no?,....oh well....

    I wrote the script.
The Brown tune would be my #1 choice. TK is owned by Rhino so that may not be a problem.
The France Joli tune would be a close second. They were able to use it in 54,but just over the closing credits. The other songs are sort of interchangable, but would have to come from 1980 or earlier,as this is when the movie is set.
for example I could replace the Jacksons with Voyage.

    Who said anything about Miramax?

Actually the Heatwave tune would have been better.
