Just finished watching VH1s 100 Greatest Dance Songs. Didn't agree but anyway...to my subject. They mentioned 3 versions of Love Hangover. Diana Ross, 5th Dimension, and Sylvester. I've never heard Sylvester's version. Does anyone have it and would like to share? Thanks...
I'm starting to believe that Sylvester might be the only one who ever heard his version. Trust me, a lot of us on the board have talked this one again and again... I know I can't find it. I don't think anyone else has either.
Love Has No Time or Place

I got to know the late, great Sylvester back in the day and the one time I wish I had a tape recorder, dammit, was back in '87 when I stayed at The Sea Isle in Key West and he was down for the Memorial Day weekend. He came by for a swim and some dish and later did an impromptu Supremes medley (no solo Diana tho)....the whole place was bowled over by his performance and we didn't even have to pay a cover charge!
At least I have the photos and memories.....

That question has been asked before, for sure...and having lived in SF where Sylvester performed at every street festival and the opening of every envelope...I NEVER heard him sing "Love Hangover". This may sound a tad direspectful--BUT, we used to go..."OH no, NOT HER again!!!!"
We were extremely bitchy and behaved very badly back then too, I can assure you.
But, Keefe, correct me if I'm wrong....I never heard "Love Hangover" as I cruised by the 10,000th street performance of Sylvester in all my 9 years of living in SF, did you???
Now, the 5th Dimension did chart their version near the bottom of the Billboard Disco chart--thus prompting Motown to get off their asses and release the Miss Ross version that DJ's were already playing from the LP.

Mark is correct, I've never heard Sylvester sing "Love Hangover". Of course, it didn't help that we would do everything we could to avoid hearing him. Ton Tons we liked, Sylvester we only tolerated. Plus, Mark was much nicer to him than I was! Mark, at least you talked to him. I remember I ran into a friend in the lobby of a Phyllis Hyman concert (at the Paramount Theater), who was at the show with Sylvester. The two of us jabbered on and on but I only nonchalantly said "Hi" to Sylvester. I'm sure he thought I was a bitch, but did I care??? Actually, I did when I found out they all went backstage to talk to Phyllis after the show because Sylvester knew Ms. Hyman! See, that's what happens when you throw too much attitude!!!
Keefe,
That must be what James Brown was referring to with "The Big Payback", eh, Miss Thing???

I agree with you both that Sylvester could be a bitch, and sometimes we even egged him on....one time we were at a CBS/Epic Records event for Patti Labelle called...."Pushin' Platinum For Patti" for her "Release the Tension" single and RELEASED album which, unfortunately bombed (was I the only person who liked that one?)....anyway, Sylvester was there and I asked him if he in was the uncredited diva doing back-up for the then Two Tons of Fun on "I GOT THE FEELING"...well, he was snapping and vogueing and sashaying within a two foot circle and then feigned a headache and asked to be escorted to his room...(All because of me???) Turns out the party was all out of his favorite beverage but I think he couldn't take the diva competition - although Patti WAS falling all over him.....at least I got some good pix with them before the attitude sessions got under way!

Thanks for the great story, DanceMan! I knew I didn't care for him for some reason! I must have sensed his "grand" attitude whenever he came into Aloha Records. I could not be bothered since I never thought he was that talented. On 2002-09-17 20:44, DanceMan wrote:

As for "Release," I liked that album when it first came out because of the Alan Toussaint production. It came out recently on CD and I wasn't as enchanted. Am I the only one that thought Patti looked horrible on the cover???
I found this on Wikipedia....could this be true???? or another falsehood perpetrated by the Wikipedia???
"The song was written by Pamela Sawyer and Marilyn McLeod and had been originally recorded by Sylvester. While Sylvester's version was becoming an underground club smash, the song was given to The Fifth Dimension as a disco number. However, when the Motown staff got a hold on it, they insisted that it would be perfect if Ross recorded it. Ross, like most of her soul contemporaries Aretha Franklin and fellow Motown label mate Marvin Gaye, resented the new musical movement until finally agreeing at the eleventh-hour to record the song."
I think if there had been an underground club smash of "Love Hangover" by Sylvester...someone would remember it. :icon_eek:

Sylvester: You know why I love you, baby boy?
Stephen L.: Why Momma?
Sylvester: Cause you've never tried to kiss my ass.
That was the last time I saw him and he was always a great friend to me. That I got to mix his last commercial release on Megatone, will always be an honour.
Could he be a bitch? Oh, hell yes! I saw him throw a hammer at someone, from up on a ladder! We only saw eachother whenever he came to Florida, maybe 3-4 times a year, but over the years he always treated me like a friend. So I'll come to The Queen Mother's defense.

I would love to hear that version. I met Sylvester in San Francisco in 1982.
He was introduced to us four Australian guys and seemed very nice.
He asked us if they had Diamonds in Australia?
We told him hell yes!
He then said that he collected them.
He seemed very exotic to us back then.
Funny too that he arrived at the party on a little motor scooter.

What was he doing, cleaning windows?

Oh God, I hope not. I don't see Sylvester doing windows.
