steely is hard times for lovers on that c.d? thanks
I recently got this CD on Geffen records & I just had to comment on it as I havent stopped playing it since. I wasn't sure about getting it as she hasn't done much 'disco' as such, with the exception of 'No Frills love' which I loved & used to dance to at clubs in '86, but I'm so glad I did. This lady has got THE most incredible voice & makes Whitney sound like Bjork!
I was aware of the spinetingling hit she had in '82 from the 'Dreamgirls' broadway show but there are a few more 'goosebumps' tracks on this CD IMO. At times her phrasing is similar to Cheryl Lynn but so much more powerful. If anyone deserves the over-used term 'diva', its this lady!

anyone like the disco version of and "and i am telling you" by koffie from the late 80s its 100 miles an hour soo fast with great strings i love it!!
There was also a dance version of 'A.I.A.T.Y.I.N.G.' from '94 by Donna Giles which I remember reading was a favourite at the time of Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys fame.
...ya gotta beat the street......
DD, was that Koffie track produced by Ian Levine as I remember one of his many 80's hi-nrg acts was Koffie & the Lovetones?
...ya gotta beat the street......
yes steely i also remember the donna giles record i wasnt really crazy about it as far as i remember if you didnt know the title you hardly would have known it was that song, the koffie record was american
Steely Dan--
I just dug out my copy of "And I Am Telling You..." by Koffie: 1983 on Pandisc Records, produced by Mitch Farber and Warren Schatz.
What a well-orchestrated, energetic and soulful remake! That stripped-down Donna Giles version doesn't even come close.
\"...a once in a lifetime feeling that returns every week...\"
That's Warren Schatz of Vicki Sue Robinson - Turn The Beat Around fame, no?
Yes...the same Warren of Ms. Robinson fame.

Yes i have to agree, the Donna Giles version sucks- its got that very mid-90's soul-less feel hasnt it?

Hi Steely,
You show the last track on the CD as "Giving Up". Is that a new version or a cover of the Motown classic as done by Gladys Knight?
Love Has No Time or Place
Nicky
I'm not sure NickNack, I'm not familiar with Gladys's version but I can imagine her doing it as its got a slightly gospelly/ bluesy feel to it & she's good at that style isn't she? The writing credits Ross & Wilson - this couldn't be Diana & Mary could it?! Do enlighten me as I'm a Motown nut & this has passed me by.

Hmmmmm.....
I've been presuming the Jennifer Holliday CD that Steely Dan has been praising was the same U.S. "Best of" released here in 1996...so I didn't pay much attention. Sorry
But, now that last mention of the song "Giving Up" made me curious...so I went to allmusic.com where they state in their review of the U.S "Best Of"..."what's strangely missing is her tender "Mr. Magic" and hard-driving rendition of the early Gladys Knight & the Pips' "Giving Up" "!!!!!
So, Markydecolumbo goes to bedroom (hey, they're in EVERY ROOM) and pulls the Jennifer Holliday CD he has and sure enough...NO "Giving Up"!!! Another item for the shopping list!!!!
Now, since Miss Holliday has been discussed, I will rerun my observation that Jen stole that "Ha-ha-ha" laugh she used in "And I'm Telling You"....from Miss Loleatta Holloways's "The Greatest Performance Of My Life". I'm just observin'!!!!!
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
S.Dan, that is Frank Wilson not MARY....
woulda made good copy tho, huh?
