My 13th happy hour post and it fell on Friday the 13th; Spooky! Anyway, it was beautiful day this past Friday and a nice crowd came out to enjoy some food, drinks and of course music. Some of the classic disco, funk and soul played this week:

Our day will come - Frankie Valli
Dancin' - The Crown Heights Affair
    Enjoy yourself - The Jacksons
Chase me - Con Funk Shun
    First time around - Skyy
    Dr. Rock - Captain Sky
    Cut loose - Bohannon
    Cutie pie - One Way
Let me be the one - Pleasure
    No Frills - Taana Gardner

and on the mellow side some of the classics were:

    Hey love - The Delfonics
I'm stone in love with you - The Stylistics
    Work it out - Breakwater
    Ladies night out - Pleasure
    Family Reunion - The O'jays

A good night with good people and good vibes. Hope these stir good vibrations within you.

    Sammy--

I like Frankie Valli's "Our Day Will Come". I think Patti Austin did background vocals on that one. "Dancin'" by Crown Heights Affair I find to be more punchier tune than "Dreaming a dream" and has a harder sound, one that really gets you moving. I love the intro to that song. The arrangement is very good overall. "Enjoy Yourself" by the Jacksons is one of my faves from them, as well as their follow-up, "Show you the way to go". Classic late '76/early '77 record. "First Time Around" by Skyy I think was included on the "Larry Levan's Paradise Garage" CD. On the ballad side, I like "I'm Stone In Love With You" by the Stylistics. Yet I'll always be partial to "You'll never get to heaven (if you break my heart)", for it is my favorite Stylistics song.

    Very good list.

'K'ontinuing the Challenge, let me comment on your K's and L's, Sammy:

I must admit, I always loved the D-Train beat - really solid and chunky and I can well understand why Keep On is a personal favourite of yours ... Nice to see some classic disco in there with Musique - we don't seem to put too much of it in the Challenge, do we?

Onto your L's - I don't know Lady Bump
Talking about Love's Train, you know very well that I have been raving about this track over the past few weeks, and consider it one of the best slow jam ballads I have ever heard!! A monster!

How can I answer such quality trax as those?? :???:

Well, here goes... Go, JP, Go!!

Love Come Down - Evelyn King (definitely play that one loud!!)
Little Baby - Patti Austin (a masterful performance by Ms Austin on a 1974 track which I picked up on a Diggin' Deeper compilation - superb!)

and for good measure, a Salsoul classic (disco time!!)
Let No Man Put Asunder - First Choice

    Now that's better!!

After a lot of head scratching, I have come up with these M's:

    Music - One Way
    Music - D-Train
Music Is My Way Of Life - Patti LaBelle (love the storming vocal performance on that one!)

Did you notice - JP is trying to be clever!! Beat that!!

Music is definitely my way of life! And yours I suspect too!

I am nervously awaiting your replies, Sammy !!!! :???:

Well Sammy, ANOTHER great list as always! Delighted to hear that a good night was had by all!!

You have picked out a tune that I used to love to bits and have completely forgotten about - Enjoy Yourself by The Jacksons! I have not heard that one in ages! Sammy has done it again!!

Con Funk Shun - Chase Me. Downright dirty and funky!! I am slowly getting into that one!

CHA - Dancin' - that record seems to crop up a hell of a lot. That is one of the earliest disco tunes I heard! Bet you got a good reaction to that one!

Skyy - First Time Around. That tune was the sort of tunes that creeps up on you unawares, and, suddenly, you're hooked! Our soul crowd really used to get down to that one!!

On the slow jams, I would just like to add that in the UK, there was a real buzz on that entire Breakwater LP and it was fetching silly money. Three trax were re-released on a 12-inch (including that track) and luckily, I went and bought it! Superb soul music!

Not such a bad Friday 13th after all!!

First of all, Robbie thanks for your comments on the list. I will say that 'Show you the way to go' by The Jacksons is a regular staple of mine when I play the happy hour. I love everything by The Crown Heights Affair, but I have to tell you that 'Dreaming a dream' is one my all-time favorite songs, thus I love it more than 'Dancin'. Now onto the the Jazzman and our on-going battle. Thanks also for your comments on the list. I agree that 'Enjoy yourself' is something I recently rediscovered and am "enjoying" very much.
Now on to the battle; Love the M&M's my friend. Music, music and more music.
All of it fantastic indeed. The 'L's were lovely too. How could I forget 'Love come down', I "love" that record. Patti Austin, fantastic. You certainly have given me a run, however, you were right when you said you'd should be nervous with my response, because look what I'm coming back with:

    Make that move - Shalamar
Mysteries of the world - MFSB
    Minefield - I-Level

'M'agnifent and 'M'arvelous if I must say do myself. Oh wait, I'm not done because I go next with the 'N's so deal with this:

    Nunk - Warp 9
Nights over Egypt - The Jones Girls
    Nasty Girl - Vanity 6

'N'ice, 'N'uff said! This is my expression right now after this bombardment I just laid on you. Can you recover, I'll wait and see.

A very nice set of N's Sammy! Especially "Nights Over Egypt" - a true silky smooth classic!

    On to my N's:

Native New Yorker - Esther Phillips (heard this on the radio for the 1st time a few weeks ago and have been raving about it ever since!! )

Never Too Much - Luther Vandross (my fave tune from Mr V )

Number One - Patrice Rushen (managed to get a jazz tune in again - at last!!!)

A Nice and Nasty selection - if you ask me!!

I will be back with the O's very soon!!

    Gotta think of some!! :???:

OK, I'm back with my O's - not too difficult....!!

    'On we go

On The Beat - B B and Q Band - bet you had that one!!
On The Funk - Cameo - a funk classic that was a JP's anthem (WHOAH - OH!!!)
One Love - Celi Bee - the first 12-inch that I ever bought and I still love playing it!!

    'O'ver to you, Sammy!!

    Jazz:

Happy to see you had some time to respond to my last round. I have to admit I love those 'N's. 'Native New Yorker', you know that is an anthem in my house, although I am partial to Odyssey's version. 'Never too much' is an anthem period. It is also my favorite Luther record. As for Patrice Rushen, she is one of my favorite female singers and musicians, I love her. Two days ago I was grooving in the car to one of my favorites by her 'Haven't you heard'. As for your 'O's, you know the B,B&Q Band was one of mine, especially since 'On the Beat' was on my top 25 list. Classic funk with Cameo, I'm diggin' it. You really leveled me with these two entries, however, I think I have the comeback in me. Check out these:

Outstanding - The Gap Band (Classic indeed)
Only you - Teddy Pendergrass (Teddy P!)
Ooh la la la - Teena marie (Another one of my fave female singers)

'O'h man, can you handle it. Wait Jazz is still not out. Well let me hit you with the 'P' funk:

Potential - The Jimmy Castor Bunch (you know I always rock this one)
Pump me up - Trouble Funk (Go-go for your a..)
Pick up the pieces - The Average White Band (Nothing needs to be said on this one)

A 'P'unishing, 'P'ulverizing round for "ALL JAM". Can Jazz recover, I doubt it. I love it.

    Sammy,

Wow! How am I gonna recover from that lot?? But I guess, as Sammy had to edit his reply twice, he must be feeling the pressure!!

Your O’s were awesome – truly awesome. I always loved that Gap Band track – my favourite from their repertoire! A really superb smouldering mid-tempo slice of funk!! “Only You” – that was Mr P’s gutsiest funkiest record he ever made (as a solo artist) IMHO!! And as for that Teena Marie track – D-licious!! I have that on a US 12-inch and I think her vocal performance on that particular track is stunning!! The picture on the cover ain’t so bad, either!!

Onto the P’s – I do not know any Jimmy Castor records, but, as you know, I will!!!
Pump Me Up – I was really into the go-go music when it came out and that it a great example!! Real power! I won’t say anything about “Pick Up The Pieces” except that it sounds bloody good when you turn up the volume!!!

    Now onto my P’s:
Put Your Body in it - Stephanie Mills (best thing she ever did?? A serious dancer!!)
Pipeline – Bruce Johnson (Not 1977 again!!)
Pop Your Fingers – Rose Royce (remember shaking your booty to that one from Rose Royce?? )

And as for my one Q - as agreed – I will go with a 1977 (groan! :???:) classic:

    Quiet Village – Ritchie Family

BTW It was really great talking to you again, Sammy!! Getting a bit of a habit!!

    Your turn!!

    Jazz:

Let me start by saying your call made my day, again. However, a battle is on so enough of the fun. Your 'P's were 'P'erfect. 'Put your body in it' is the jam. Rose Royce, love it. I didn't know the Bruce Johnson track though. The Ritchie Family, I always dug them as I have a couple of their LP's. Now onto my 'Q'uaint track:

Quiet Storm - Smokey Robinson (Love this song)

Wait another flurry of punches starting with 'R':

Rigor Mortis - Cameo (More funk from Larry Blackmon and Co.)
Rock with you - Michael Jackson (Can't deny this one)
and to really stick it to Jazz,
Running away - Roy Ayers (   )

Sorry buddy, had to do it. I know I have you 'R'eeling right now after that barrage. I await your response.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

    Sammy,

Aaarrgghhh! How could you be so cruel to me, Sammy??
And behind Blax’s back too!! You know how much he loves that one!!

Oh well, I did take your “On The Beat” I guess ….

I love that Quiet Storm track as well – another Sammy gem!! Cameo, Michael Jackson – two excellent tracks as well. Cameo should get more of a mention, m’thinks… Off The Wall – the entire LP was outstanding, IMHO!

Anyway – on with the Challenge:

On the count of NINE I am getting up and ….

Runaway Love – Linda Clifford (class, class, class!! And take your dog with ya!! )
Runaway – Loleatta Holloway/Salsoul Orch ( I remember Norman Jay playing that one a lot over the past year or so – a great track..)

And a Killer to get my revenge:

Rising To The Top – Keni Burke (on the SOUL side)

    JP is back!!

Now on to the easy ‘S’ s

Shake – GQ (dig the bass on that one!)
Summer Madness – Kool and the Gang (you know how good that one is!!)
Somebody’s Gotta Win/Lose – The Controllers (and I know how much YOU love that one as well, Sammy!!  )

Now I have U on the ropes …

BTW I have some interesting ideas for our next challenge … watch this space!!

Wow! Now to get back at you with I'm coming with:

Strawberry Letter #23 or Stomp - The Bros. Johnson (Take your pick)
Sukiyaki - A Taste of Honey (Sweet indeed)
    and to funk you up,
Slide or Stellar Fungk - Slave (Killer Funk)

'S'mashing 'S'ock to you. Oh wait, there's still the 'T's. How about:

Tighten up - Archie Bell and The Drells (...from Houston, Texas )
Take that to the bank - Shalamar (Uplifting)
Tonight, I'm alright - Narada Michael Walden (A killer dance track)

Take that! You had me down with your monster round, but not out. I can't wait to see what you come back with. I am also curious as to our next challenge. Fun, indeed.

Whew!! Just when I thought I had him on the ropes, Sammy comes straight back at me with another STORMING round!! This challenge is getting HOT!!

What can I say? Strawberry Letter 23/Stomp - excellent music! I love the Bros Johnson - you could have gone with my favourite - Streetwave as well!! Slide from Slave - storming funk indeed! Don't know that Taste oF Honey track!

Three fantastic T's!! That Shalamar track is superb! Love it! And that Narada Michael Walden track - Ithink he made some sensational music, especially in terms of arrangements, and that is no exception! Get on down! And Archie Bell and the Drells - very collectable here in the UK!!

How can I beat that lot? :???:

I'll be back in the morning with my list ...

It's time for T, Sammy! Here we go ...

The River Drive - Jupiter Beyond (10 minutes of hard "get down and strut your funky stuff" music! )

The Nights The Lights Went Out - The Trammps
(for some unknown reason that is my favourite Trammps tune! )

Now it's time to blast UUUUU off the planet!!

Shall I be nasty?? Hmmm - well Sammy did take Running Away off me when Blax is not around, so, why not go for it???

Under Your Spell - Phyllis Hyman (Heh! Heh!)

Use It Up Wear It Out - Odyssey (1-2-3 Shake your body down ... !! Bet sammy's shakin' NOW! )

U Turn Me on - Tomorrow's Edition (used it in the last challege, m'thinks! It's good enough to use again!)

Where do I begin; Oh yeah, 'Under you spell', that was cold blooded. You know how I love Phyllis Hyman. The 'T's were cool, especially The Trammps, however, you stumped with the track from Jupiter Beyond. I never heard of that one. On your 'U's, you were right when you said I was shaking to Odyssey. Now let me hit 'U' with my 'U'ltimate list of 'U's:

Up, up and away - The Fifth Dimension (Classic indeed)
Use me - Bill Withers (Classic soul)
Unlock the Funk - Locksmith (Funk, all funk and nothing but the funk)

As for the 'V's, I thought like the 'Q's it would be a little difficult to come up with three entries each so I suggest one for this letter and for my 'V'ictorius entry I am going with:

Very Special - Debra Laws (Killer slow joint)

Deal with it. Not bad for coming second with the 'U's. This battle is relentless, but I'm loving every minute of it. I'll be ready with my 'W's whenever you are; That is if you're able to recover.

Well done on the U's!! I love that Bill Withers track, and particularly love Unlock The Funk. What a great LP!!! That track is particularly satisfying. Don't know 5th Dimension. And I just about remember that Debra Laws track!!

    Now for my V :

    Vibrations - Roy Ayers

I will be honest - I really struggled to find a V  The only other one I could come up with was Smokey Robinson and Vitamin U....

    W is a bit easier:

We Came To Play - Tower Of Power (drop da bomb!)
We Live In Brooklyn Baby - Roy Ayers (while Blax is away..)
Kool and The Gang - Winter Sadness (not far away ...)

What shall we do about the X's?? Leave it out all together ??

My idea for the next challenge is to pick a record label alphabetically, then provide an artist / song from that label ..... Is that a good one??

    Over 2U Sammy

    Jazz:

Great entries on your 'W's. 'We came to play', I know that one all too well. 'We live in Brooklyn baby', being originally from Brooklyn you know I'm feeling this one, not to mention it is one of my favorite Roy Ayers tracks; Of which there are many. Not sure if I know that Kool & The Gang track. Gonna have to check my collection. Now onto my 'W'onderful list of entries:

Walk away from love - David Ruffin (How could you let this one slip by)
We - Brass Construction (For the Blaxman)
Was that all it was - Jean Carn (Classic dance record)

'W'ell I think I 'W'alloped you with that round. I agree the 'X's are tough so we can just go straight to the 'Y's. So without further or do here goes:

You'll never find another love like mine - Lou Rawls (A disco classic)
Young love - Teena Marie (Another killer slow jam from that unmistakable voice)
You and I - Stevie Wonder (Classic slow cut)

    'Y'ipes!

    Easy,

How could I forget Walk Away From Love?

Onto your Y’s – a good choice but I reckon I will have you on the Y’s …wait and see!! That Lou Rawls track is indeed a classic. That Stevie Wonder track is a beautiful song, I must admit.. Don’t know the TM one, though

RIGHT – ready to Wipe you out!!

Yum Yum (Gimme Some) – Fatback Band (one nil with a FUNK ATTACK!! )

You – Samuel Jonathan Johnson (two nil with a fab track I haven’t heard in ages! A great dance track from ’78! F-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c !! Do you remember it??)

You Are You Are – Linda Clifford (three nil with a glorious uptempo soulful outing from the disco diva herself – from the If My Friends Could See Me Now LP !!!)

I reckon the Z’s will be difficult for ya, Sammy (like I struggled with the V’s)

But my Z is a cracker – played it this morning on my MD on the train to work, and have been singing it all day ever since!!

Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart – The Trammmmmps Fabulous!  four – nil to JP!!

    Over to your final entry!

Shall we start the new challenge on Monday?

    Jazzman:

'Yum, Yum' by The Fatback Band is not just yummy, but best describes the rest of your list. I see you really enjoy Linda Clifford as you've listed her more than once in your challenge. I enjoy her that much also. Now to 'Z'app you with my 'Z':

Zulu - The Quick ('82 between my Sophomore and junior year of college)

Well we made it to this point just in time for you to go home for the weekend. You see I'm keeping track of the time in the UK. I think the label challenge would be a good way to start off the new week next week. So till then, take care my friend. Great battle and I look forward to many more challenges, musically that is.

Enjoy your peaceful weekend, Sammy - I know you are looking forward to it!! Not too peaceful I hope - a little music at home maybe??

Have a good one (that is for everybody on the Board as well)!!!

A new week and a new challenge!!

Nice to see Blaxman making a surprise appearance! - One day he will learn! Can't wait until we get to P and I can choose Polydor. Wonder what track I will pick!! Heh! Heh!

Anyway I thought I would set the ball rolling with :

    ATCO
Blue Magic - Three Ring Circus and Sideshow

I think they were big hits in the US. All I have from Blue Magic is two US 7" singles from 1974 with those two wonderful trax on them .... A great start to the new challenge!!

Who's next? Sammy, or even the mysterious Blaxman, or even the Z-man??? Gulp! :???:

    I have three responses so let me get to them;
DiscoDisk, thank you very much for thinking of me. I will be in touch with you by private e-mail when I get home later today. I appreciate the gesture and will be more than happy to pay for the record. Wow, a message from the Blaxcave. Now I know you can never underestimate the powers of Blaxman, the music superhero. Now onto Jazz and the label challenge. Now Jazz, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to come up with another label and artist that starts with 'A' or I'm supposed to go to 'B'. :???: I'm going to play it safe and stick with 'A'. If I am wrong please let me know. First, let me comment on your choice of ATCO and Blue Magic. Before I had Blue Magic's Greatest Hits on vinyl I had those 7"s and remember that white and yellow label with the big ATCO letters clearly. If I'm correct there was a trumpet on the label. I love Blue Magic especially one of my favorite slow joints 'Spell'. Now onto my pick, similar to yours, but different I pick:

AVCO - You make me feel brand new/The Stylistics

Looks like a battle of harmony groups instead of labels. I don't think we went wrong with either pick. Had to come back strong and I think I did. Now I'll wait to see what's next from you or even the Z-man.

    Easy,

You played it absolutely fine, Sammy! A round of A's from each of us, then a round of B's ...

I reckon we'll let the Z-man (Zeca) come in when he's ready, but it's over to you to start the B's round....

I love the Stylistics and I love that record!

One of the interesting things about this challenge is that I have an unfair advantage!
