NOTE: The following is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. Do not take it seriously. Some have, so I felt I better type a word of caution. I am not, repeat...NOT-- mad at anyone who had anything to do with the compiling of the last Disco 500 list. It was just a joke. Is that clear??? Repeat, a JOKE.

Well, it's obviously not as momentous as deciding which one of your two children you have to give to the Nazi's...BUT, for me...I still have a dilemma deciding which songs to include in the top 25 list and which to leave out. (How's that for Drama Queen???!!!)

Last time, my favorite list was from a guy named "dennis"--who voted for 50 lovely records, mostly from the "early days" of disco...therefore, I considered his list--MY VOTE for those songs--and I went for a mostly later era list. I'm looking at my OLD list tonight and am shocked at how many of my choices (Including my top 2) DID NOT even place in the Top 500 (was my ballot even counted???...I'm a tad suspicious!!!) Hey, did song #500 have more than 25 points??? If it did--I guess I was just a Loser.

Last time, I picked (because of signifcant dancing memories of each record) the following:

    1) GIVE IT TO ME BABY - Rick James (DID NOT Place)
    2) EVOLUTION - Giorgio Moroder (DNP)
    3) I FEEL LOVE - Donna Summer (#7)
    4) DON'T STOP TIL YOU GET ENOUGH - Michael Jackson (#214)
    5) LA BAMBA - Antonia Rodriguez (DNP)
    6) WAS THAT ALL IT WAS - Jean Carn (#126)
    7) YOU CAN DO IT - Al Hudson & The Partners (DNP)
    8. THIS WILL BE A NIGHT TO REMEMBER - Eddie Holman (#372)
    9) FROM HERE TO ETERNITY- Giorgio Moroder (#17)
    10) THE RUNNER - Three Degrees (#210)
    11) LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME - ABBA (#62)
    12) LOVE IS IN YOU - Nightlife Unlimited (#163)
    13) SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR ME - Space (DNP)
    14) MASTERPIECE - Gazebo (DNP)
    15) THIS TIME BABY - Jackie Moore (#50)
    16) CRANK IT UP (FUNK TOWN) - Peter Brown (#434)
    17) USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT - Odyssey (DNP)
18)8. CAN YOU FEEL IT - The Jackson (DNP)
    19) VERTIGO/RELIGHT MY FIRE - Dan Hartman w/Loleatta Holloway (#9)
    20) HOT STUFF/BAD GIRLS - Donna Summer (DNP/#124)
    21) QUIET VILLAGE - Ritchie Family (#260)
    22) MUSIC IS MY WAY OF LIFE - Patti LaBelle (#239)
    23) DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY - Voggue (#141)
    24) HEART OF GLASS - Blondie (#428)
    25) LOVIN' IS REALLY MY GAME - Brainstorm (#26)
    26) TRIPPIN ON THE MOON - Cerrone (DNP)
    27) WALK THE NIGHT - Skatt Brothers (DNP)
    28. 8) LIKE AN EAGLE - Dennis Parker (DNP)
    29) BEAT THE CLOCK - Sparks (#18.)8)
    30) HOLD ON TO MY LOVE - Jimmy Ruffin (#287)
    31) DO YOU LOVE ME- Patti Austin (#448)
    32) AIN'T NOTHING GONNA KEEP ME FROM YOU - Teri DeSario (#70)
    33) LOVE INSURANCE - Front Page (#46)
    34) CAN'T BE LOVE - DO IT TO ME ANYWAY - Peter Brown (DNP)
    35) STARS IN YOUR EYES - Herbie Hancock (DNP)
    36) HOLD YOUR HORSES - First Choice (#80)
    37) MAMA USED TO SAY - Junior (DNP)
    38)8. DON'T STOP THE MUSIC- Yarbrough & Peoples (#486)
    39) LOVE IS IN CONTROL - Donna Summer (DNP)
    40) SAVE YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR #1 - Rene & Angela (DNP)
    41) IT'S ECSTASY (WHEN YOU LAY NEXT TO ME) - Barry White (#282)
    42) JUST BE YOURSELF - Nightlife Unlimited (#474)
    43) FOLLOW ME - Amanda Lear (#154)
    44) IN THE FOREST - Baby O (#195)
    45) GENIUS OF LOVE - Tom Tom Club (DNP)
    46) YOU'LL NEVER KNOW - Hi-Gloss (DNP)
    47) RISE - Herb Alpert (DNP)
48)8. TONIGHT - YOU & ME - Phyllis Hyman (DNP)
    49) FEAR - Easy Going (DNP)
    50) ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (THE PRESIDENT ARRIVES) - John Carpenter (DNP)

That's it. I love all those records--BUT somehow my affection wasn't shared.

Now you gotta remember that when we voted the first time--the rules were not really enforced and were sorta being made up as we went along--SOOO lotsa folks voted for MORE than 25--BUT supposedly only the first 25 were counted.

    Now I wanta type "dennis's " list...
But I'm gonna post this in case I might lose it...

    Hey Marky.
We share your affection for many of the songs on you list. "You Can Do It" is an example of a song I really love. Fortunately or unfortunately we share a love for a genre with many great songs. I had a tougher time deciding who was gonna be left off my list once I got around #20. In fact it was much harder than picking my top 5.
    Find them and destroy them!

'Stars in Your eyes' by Herbie Hanclock is so wonderful; very very classy. Its one of those slower tracks that I think u call morning music isnt it?
I was also surprised that 'Save Your Love for Me' by Space didnt chart last time as well as their fabulous 'My Love is Music' which I've put in my Top 25.

    Marky--

I LOVE a lot of the songs on your original list (you can probably guess which ones); it's too bad the "Hot Stuff"/"Bad Girls" medley wouldn't qualify under the rules this time around, and to me those songs just seem incomplete without each other.

I love both those Peter Brown songs too and think it's a crime he's best known for "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me." But some of those synth-heavy numbers on your list leave me cold (but maybe that's the intent of synth music?); I know this borders on sacrilege, but I think some of Giorgio's solo stuff is boring. Did you ever hear the '90s remake of "Save Your Love for Me" by Destination (not the "Move on Up" group) on Almighty Records? An awesome--and totally different--song!

That list from Dennis (is he still among us?) is very good too, and you raise a point that I considered when I posted my list here: I wonder if people will look at my list and think, "Well, Jeff already voted for 'Rumour Has It' so I won't"? In other words, does making our lists public skew the voting?

And there seems to be only one song (based on my quick perusal) that shows up again and again: "Relight My Fire."

Ah Jeffy--once again the "cybersisters" are thinking "N Sync". I'm thinking of making "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" my #1 song this time around--I feel I ranked it much too low last time. And I'm moving Eddie Holman up too. Now, my #1 & #2 from last time--will still be on the last--BUT ranked lower, I guess.

Steely Dan-- "My Love is Music" is definitely another song I meant to type on that list of songs that shockingly didn't make it. I'm looking at it the list I scribbled and it's there--I just missed it--as emotionally on edge and as late as it was.

One last thing--LAST TIME, remember we saw EVERYONE'S list as it was posted. THIS TIME, we've only seen a handful of selected stuff--most of which I don't recall at this point--EXCEPT FOR a couple #1 songs that I have NEVER heard of!!!! Hey, it's a free country!!!!

So, as Bernie mentioned at the onset, after seeing the initial postings --the list should look very different THIS TIME.

    Oh...and one mo' thing....

Jeffy--re: the electronic songs "that leave you cold"...1) you DIDN'T DANCE to em at Trocadero and 2) you either weren't doing or weren't doing the RIGHT...(dare I say it???) DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:

    Cause, BABY...those are DRUG SONGS...

"Evolution", "From Here To Eternity","Save Your Love For Me", "Masterpiece", "Follow Me", "Fear" and the probably unheard of by most folks, totally electronic instrumental (except for some woman's screams) "Escape From New York" (it was a Spanish or Mexican Import)--are DRUG SONGS (sshhh...don't tell my mother!!!)

Bobby Viteritti was a master of taking you into a heavy druggy set and tossing and turning your mindset with "popper" music and then bringing you out with pretty, calming, life-affirming music. Ah, yes, I remember it well.

I loved and could sing to just about every song on all the postings above. I think that there are always going to be some tough choices one has to omit....just reading a few of those made me mad that I didn't include them, but I know that there are some that I did include on my earlier submitted list which will never make the Top 500 - maybe Top 1000 tho....lol !...I had no problem leaving out both the Donna Summer medley and Dan Hartman....all great songs, I just never play them anymore..(Frankly, I liked "Instant Replay/Countdown/This Is It" better)...I guess I am too tired of hearing them, that's all....I agree about Eddie Holman....move him way up near the Top....that song always reminds me of the late DJ Jimmy Stuard who left us way too soon...

    By the way....

I thought I was having a Senior Moment...but who is Jeff Wayne and his "War of The Worlds?" When was it released and did it play on the East Coast? Is it available on any compilation? First time seeing that name, to my recollection.

I Believe In The Boogie, But Lovin\' Is Really My Game.

    Dance Man...

The Jeff Wayne "War Of The Worlds" AKA "The Eve Of The War" was on a Columbia 12" from a LP that was an homage to the Orson Welles radio show. It was sung by Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues ("The chances of anyone coming from Mars was a million to one they said...BUT STILL THEY COME") Sound familiar??? Very orchestral; upbeat; a Troc classic.

Now, one last point...as a dancer...you would get tired of the popular songs and no matter how good they were, you'd think "Oh, NOT this again"....some of that holds in my thinking to this day, I think. Some records I heard enough of back then, even though I know they are excellent records. THUS, my choices last time were for records that I NEVER got tired of hearing and ALWAYS made me wanna dance. Now I realize that this is a very tricky and totally subjective instinctual thing. One man's #1 ("Relight My Fire") is another man's #500 ("Boogie Wonderland") or another man's #12,000 ("Your Love" or anything by Lime). Yeah, I just HAD to get a Lime dig in there.

    Ah Quinnykins (Thanks Steely Dan!!!)...

Bless your little pointed head.

I knew I'd hear from you. It's just rambling, stream-of consciousness, tongue-in cheek sarcasm from a mere punter. Nothing you should concern yourself with. Jeez, do ya think I really want people to feel sorry for me cause my Top Song didn't make the list???? DUH!!! Do you think I really care???? It takes a sense of humor to "get me", I guess.

Wanna post something about a Bill Cosby record and "RUIN" my thread!!!

Go right ahead. I don't feel THAT territorial that I have to keep pissing to keep others from taking the subject into another, possibly more interesting direction.

    BE MY GUEST.

    Marky, Marky, Marky--

In an effort to keep your thread on the topic...

Yeah, I realize that all the synth classics you named are druggie songs ; so why you're not much into Patrick Cowley--who said he created his songs as "gay drug music"--escapes me, but I suppose it was easy to OD on Cowley/Sylvester/etc. in SF back in the day.

Personally I never did a lot of drugs--unless you count LOTS of alcohol and poppers and the occasional hit of speed ("I just splash a little Fresca on a panty shield...!"); I'm more likely to associate certain songs with various men than with drugs. To each his own, baby!

Oh, and one mo' thing: "Follow Me"??! You'd HAVE to be high to stand the sound of Amanda Lear's voice. UNBEARABLE!!!

    Jeffy, Jeffy, Jeffy...

Yes, the "white kid gloves" are off, in case ya didn't notice.

You had to hear Amanda Lear's "Follow Me" at the Troc, "high" to fully understand. I don't care for anything else by her--BUT this track was CLASSIC!!!!

OK, I just pulled the 1981 Troc Anniversary Party tape #4, side 2:

    The sequencing is as follows:

"No Romance (Just Want To Dance)/Keep on Dancing" - Theo Vaness
    "Magnifique" - Magnifique
    "Love Attack" - Ferrara
    "The Break" - Kat Mandu
    "Wishbone" - Tantra
    "FOLLOW ME" - AMANDA LEAR
"Save Your Love For Me" - Space
"If You Weren't Afraid" - Giorgio Moroder
"Lost Angeles/Faster Than The Speed Of Love" Giorgio Moroder
"Race With The Wind" - Peter Jacques Band
    "Souvenirs" - Voyage
    "Sandstorm" - La Bionda
    "Beyond" - Herb Alpert

    Then back to earth with:
"Baby I'm Burning" - Dolly Parton!!!!

Patrick Cowley--now, this is the ultimate in understatement-- just wasn't as good as Mr. Moroder; NO COMPARISON!!! Plus, we heard that Cowley stuff so much it started to annoy. The Europeans did trippy electronic music better than Americans. No Contest!!!

As to getting this thread back on track--there is no point to this thread--just some background information on the last poll and some random musings from a procrastinating punter.

I guess I've said everything I wanted to say.

But, it's my Thread and I'll Muse if I want to.

    Peace Out.

That's why you love "Hills Of Katmandu" so much, yes?

When it comes to trippy electronic music, Klaus Schulze's "Mirage" LP is the ultimate. Put in on, shut off the lights, and let it suck you into the velvet darkness...

    Ah, Grahammy, Grahammy, Grahammy

Ooops, that sounds like you're someone's "nana" or "Granny" doesn't it????

I feel like I should put on blackface and do it as an Al Jolson number ..."Grahammy....Grahammmy...the sun shines east"...OK ENUF!!!!

I fear that maybe we need to put WARNING LABELS at the beginning of our threads--WARNING: the subject matter and commentary herein is only of interest to GAY MEN (Homos) of a certain age. Be forewarned that if you read any further, you may be totally bewildered by the use of sarcasm, irony, bitchiness and just plain UN-American, Un-hetero, UN-manly banter.

Proceed with caution--OR you may be drawn to the "dark side" and be forced to watch reruns of "Sex & The City" and listen to Donna Summer records for all of eternity.

    Uh-huh, that's what I think sometimes.

Was the Troc DJ also in charge of the drug concession? That might explain this playlist...

Not one of my favorite lineups, I'm afraid. I've always thought "Magnifique" was one of the most monotonous songs ever.

But "Baby, I'm Burnin'"? NOW yer talkin'!!!
