    Hi Leanman,

As a northern fan myself, I was in ecstasy when I heard about this CD. Unfortunately, I live in Brasil and, to import an album like this one, I will pay the price of the album X 3! Why? Because 1 dollar = 3 reais. I think I have to save money for a looong time to purchase this musical treasure.

    Peace,

    Zeca,
I admit I don't know anything about importing, so I wonder how much it would cost to buy it here and then send it to you. It's $14.99 US on Amazon.com. Would it be cheaper than to import it?

    Hi LeanMean,

I haven't heard the cd you're talking about but I do have one in a similar vein from Motown: THE ULTIMATE RARITIES COLLECTION #1: MOTOWN SINGS MOTOWN TREASURES.

What this one has is the artists giving their takes on their stablemates' hits. I really got into it. Here's the listing:

YOU'VE REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME - THE JACKSON 5
I WANT YOU BACK - DAVID RUFFIN
HOW SWEET IT IS (TO BE LOVED BY YOU) - ISLEY BROTHERS
EVERYBODY NEEDS LOVE - THE VELVELETTES
    MY GIRL - MARVIN GAYE
IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE - FANTASTIC FOUR
I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE - SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES
STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE - KIM WESTON (This is just outstanding!)
IN MY LONELY ROOM - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES
COME SEE ABOUT ME - THE ORIGINALS
THE GIRL'S ALRIGHT WITH ME - THE SPINNERS
TOO BUSY THINKING ABOUT MY BABY - JIMMY RUFFIN
WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKEN HEARTED - THE CONTOURS
I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME - GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS (Gladys RULES!!!)
    I HEAR A SYMPHONY - STEVIE WONDER
THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME - BLINKY
    TRULY YOURS - THE TEMPTATIONS
THE WAY YOU DO THE THINGS YOU D0 - THE UNDERDOGS
CAN I GET A WITNESS - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES
FOREVER - MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS
MY SMILE IS JUST A FROWN (TURNED UPSIDE DOWN) - THE TEMPTATIONS

I'll probably pick up the one you're thinking about getting as I really like this one. Plus, it would be all "new" to me. That I like.

Most of the songs are in mono, two or three are in stereo--The sound has been cleaned up. There are a few Gems--The 3 or 4 songs by Brenda Holloway stand out. The last song by The Velvelettes "There's No Place Like Motown" should have been a hit.

Well, thanks for the heads up, guys & gals!!!

I stopped by Amoeba tonight with the express idea of seeing if I could find "A Cellarful of Motown"--at first it was nowhere to be found--then I thought maybe I should check the overstock underneath--and VOILA!!!--I found a promo copy for $12.95!!! BTW, Allmusic.com says this CD is a 5-star masterpiece and one of the most important releases of old material in recent years, thanks to Northern soul collector's demands for unreleased material from the Motown vaults. The critic who wrote the review says a lot of the selections on the CD were most likely rejected for release for being a little too raw for Motown founder Berry Gordy's more mainstream taste. The reviewer likened some of the performances closer to what would have been expected from Stax recordings.

OK, so then I went nuts!!!!

    I also scooped up:
    Patti Austin: "For Ella" (9.95)
    Fourplay: "Heartfelt" (7.99)
Minnie Riperton: "Petals: Minnie Riperton Collection" (2 CD set) (14.99)
    James Taylor: "October Road" (10.99)
Weezer: "Weezer (Green Album) (9.95) (I like that "Island In The Sun" song)

AND "Disco Spectrum 3" ( especially for the Denise LaSalle "I'm So Hot"--wish it had the flip side of that 12" "Try My Love" also!!!)

    Vinyl:

Chuck Cissel "Cisselin' Hot" 12" (1979/Arista)-- since folks were discussing this recently--I found out that Cissel was in the original cast of "A Chorus Line" and that Michael Bennet, that show's director, actually produced his first LP--Not the one that this 12" is from--that was by Skip Scarborough ( composer for Pattie Labelle/ Earth Wind & Fire & many others ) & Dave Crawford (Candi Staton).

    LP's:
    Rose Royce: "Strikes Again" (1978)
    S'Express: "Original Soundtrack (1989)
Sister Sledge "Love Somebody Today (1980)
Jessica Williams "Queen Of Fools" (1979)
Village People "Live & Sleazy" (1979)

The 12" was $2.95 and the LP's were all $1.00 apiece.

Since I am going to SF in a few weeks, this was probably an unnecessary trip to Amoeba--but sugar pie, honey bunch-- I can't help myself!!!

I think this is the second volume. I own the first one, and it's hit and miss. Only one of the songs really made an impression on me...it was Stevie Wonder singing a Smokey Robinson song called "Are You Sure Love is the Name of this Game?" Some of the other songs had their moments, but for the most part, unreleased songs are unreleased for a reason. And I'll bet Motown has thousands and thousands of unreleased songs. I'd be primarily interested in more Holland/Dozier/Holland songs; what unbelievable writers they were.

Both volumes are excellent and are of comparable quality with no third tier stuff in the mix.

Reluctant as I am to get involved ( because I'm coming from a Northern Soul point of view, which might light a blue touch paper with some people who are as we speak burning a pile of Northern Soul records somewhere ...probably. )

Volume 2 has some great tracks. The Supremes alternate version 'Honey Bee' is excellent and is almost an early disco track (also issued on a 45 at the same time as the CD) both the JJ Barnes tracks, Hattie Littles and The Contours 'Take Him Back If He Makes You Happy' is fantastic, The Elgins track is fantastic, Brenda Holloways 'Crying Time is quality, and the track from her sister Patrice Holloway (who sadly passed away last weekend) a version of The Supremes 'Those DJ Shows' is great...all in all I think it was a great CD, maybe not quite up to the standard of the frist one, but great non the less. Of course if you don't like this kind of music then errrr... I suppose you wont like this ! :D

No one else been taking out bank loans to buy the complete motown story book/cd sets? Year by year and priced from $80 - $140!

Got the first 5 and now waiting with baited breath on 1966 to be released :)

Every Motown / Tamla / Gordy + all other labels Berry swallowed up!

    B sides, alternate takes etc.

    pure quality
