Toto "Georgy Porgy" is a killer track, Cheryl Lynn is on that as well. Look out for another great version of that song by Charme with Luther Vandross on lead vocals.
I got kinda hooked lately by this TOTO output. I always consider 'em as a MOR band but this one stands the Disco-test IMO.

Baby, take me
high upon a hillside
high up where the stallion

Do i have to apologise for liking a record? is it not all about personal taste, i don't really judge a record on it's bpm's. Some of the best tracks ever are based on repitition.
usually not![]()

I must admit that the lyrics of "Georgie Porgy " do make me cringe a little. But recently i found a 12" mix of it and i realised how good a track it is.

I think it's more soft-pop-rock than anything else, although it did make Billboard's Disco chart back in 79' at #80. But it also charted on Billboard's R&B charts at #18. However, I think the credit for making the Disco/R&B charts has to go to Cheryl's vocals and not because Toto ever made anything Disco or R&B. Btw I love this song, with nursery rhyme and all. :p
Sorry to be picky (no I'm not really!;)) Toto the group may not be that funky generally but I have countless funk/r & B/disco records that were written by or played on by the guys from Toto; they were L.A. mega session musicians & could play almost anything brilliantly! Check out the credits on many 'black' records from the late 70s/early 80s that were recorded in L.A. & chances are they will feature one or more of the Toto guys playing on them.

I'm appreciate your point. I never said those guys weren't funky. In fact, they were the musical genius behind Chery's "Got To Be Real" and could be heard througout her debut album as well as her "Start Over" album. David Paich co-wrote the classic with Cheryl. As individuals they arrange, performed, produced and/or wrote some big time Dance, Pop and R&B tunes for other artist (including Michael Jackson's Dance oriented album "Thriller"). Since the question was is "Georgy Porgy" disco I simply made the point that Toto, as a band, are a pop-rock band and did not meant to make a disco oriented song with "Georgy Porgy". The song happened to be funky enough to land on the disco/r&b chart mainly because of Chery's support. Personally I like Toto. I have a few of their singles (Hold The Line, Rosanna, Africa, etc) and was even listening to them yesterday.![]()
remicks, ya had to go there huh :-D
I do really like this song but when you get right down to it you're right it, the lyrics are weak.
Find them and destroy them!
Quite a few artists and groups who were not considered black music, or soul or disco artists, made an impact on the disco music scene both here (UK) and abroad in the USA. Examples such as Steely Dan, Hall & Oats, and AWB spring to mind. None of whom were considered strictly disco artists, but who certainly had major R&B, jazz, and soul music influences in their compositions.
Not really disco, but it's a great pop-soul tune. Always loved it. Though I think the Charme version is even better, what with Luther's vocals.
In the early 90s, the track was sampled for MC Lyte's Poor Georgie:

Disco Funk
I recently bought a CD with a version of 'Georgy Porgy' by Side Effect from 1980. It's nowhere near as good as Toto's original.:-?
