i recently went to a vinyl shop and found a sealed copy of Brenda and Herb's "I Who Have Nothing/I Wanna Make You My Sweetheart" on the H&L label...but as i later make my way to the other bins, i see the same record but as a "TK Disco" promo pressing in good condition...furthermore, the label states that it is from the Drive 109 lp "In Heat Again"...indeed the producers on the TK Disco pressing were Steve Jerome and Lou Hemsey of H & L Records (same label where Van McCoy hit paydirt with "The Hustle")...what i ask is why this single was released also on another label just about simultaneously that is domestic (we're not talking about an overseas pressing)? i find it to be strange that a single would be released in two domestic labels almost around the same period...

for the record, i got the TK Disco pressing since it was a bit cheaper but still in good condition...i especially like "i wanna make you my sweetheart"..a nice, mid-tempo cut.

with well tidings and kind regards,

I have the H&L release and never heard of a TK one. Are they identical? Probably, the record was sold to Drive/TK for an album release This record is H&L 2007. As far as I know there is only one more later H&L 12 incher (H&L 2008 The Stylistics: Fly / Lion sleeps tonight). Maybe H&L closed down and sold rights to another label??
Anyway, there are many examples of the same record on two different labels in the same period. Some that I remember now:
Inner Life: I'm caught up.... (TCT and then Prelude)
Strykers: Body Music (Cesaree and then Prelude)
Flakes: Sugar frosted lover (Magic Disc and then Salsoul)
Jumbo: Turn on to love LP (PYE and then Prelude.... and the code is the same!!!!)

Giovanni, you're probably right about H&L closing around 1978 because i've have yet to see a post-1978 H&L release....and i did see the "the lion sleeps tonight" on TK Disco as a promo that same day (but did not have enough funds)...i may pick it up the next time if it is still available...

the inner life release was originally on TCT records out of Gutenberg, New Jersey (just right next door where Bernie and I grew up)....Salsoul and Prelude were bidding for the rights to the release and Prelude got the rights for something like $20,000(???), which was unprecedented at the time for an independent disco label.

also, thanks for listing those double-label releases...i never knew that "body music" originally came out on Cesare....i would love to see a picture of that label.

with well tidings and kind regards,

    Hey Kelvy,

Your timing is wild. In Bernie's Gloria Gaynor interview she mentions that her 45RPM version of "Honey Bee" is on Columbia while the album was released on MGM.

About H&L, the wonderful Sandy Mercer's "You Are My Love" is on that label. 1978, # HLS-2005.

And now that I've opened my mouth I see you were talking about dual SINGLE releases. Sorry, guy... just too anxious to get my two cents in.

NickNack...that's cool! the Gloria Gaynor dual release on columbia/mgm is around the same vein...it was funny how columbia records did not warm up to the continous-music-side concept that she adopted for her album...

i never heard about the Sandy Mercer single but trusting your recommendation, i will definetly get it if i find it at a reasonable price...

on another note, i got the 1979 Evelyn Thomas album and the 1980 Candi Staton album with "looking for love" today for a dollar each which i'm going to listen out soon...hope your week is a good one...enjoy and relish!

with well tidings and kind regards,
