We've all been there. Heard a record that makes the hairs stand up on the back of our necks, but when it came to the dance floor it's bombed.
In early '77 I had just arrived in Mallorca for my third season there. My boss gave me a pile of records he'd bought a week or so before in London so that I could get an up to the minute play list together.
I pulled out a 7" of T. Connection - Do What You Wanna Do and I remember thinking SHIIIIIT!!!!
It absolutely knocked me out. Come the time to play it in anger at the Discotheque and it failed miserably. It never really took off, even though I persevered with it. I was never more disappointed. It wasn't until I got hold of a 12" that it started to happen, but by then it was relatively old and getting past it. However I never stopped playing that track, whenever I had the chance.
About 3 years later I saw about a dozen copies of the 12" in a cut out bin and bought the lot. I still have 7 or 8 copies. One day, one day I might just make a few quid.

1)"Manhattan Love Song" by King Erisson. Even with medium rotation airplay here in NYC, this great song was never big in clubs.
2)"Save And Spend" by Cheryl Barnes. I've been championing this track here for the longest.
3)"Sevilla Nights" by Santa Esmeralda. Probably the best track they ever made.
4)"Space Warrior" by Munich Machine. Got lost in Great Product Glut Of The Summer Of '79.
5)"212 North 12th" by The Salsoul Orchestra. See number 4.
6)"The Real Thing" by Daddy Dewdrop. See number 4 again.
    7)"It's Serious" by Cameo
"Can You Get It" by Mandrill
    9)"Power" by the Temptations
10)"Feeling Love" by Hott City. Another victim of number 4.

I recently fell in love with this all over again. A shame it didn't work back in the day.

One that I remember not working as I thought is "Too Much, Too Soon" by T.S Monk. "Candidate for Love" worked so well but this didn't catch. Might have been some confusion with Fantasy's song of the same title which was getting a lot of play.

Another that my lover and I liked a lot but the crowd was hohum over is "Rotwang's Party (Robot Dance)". This is the B-side to Freddie Mercury's "Love Kills". We always thought this was a hot instrumental but each time I played it, the floor let me know they didn't agree. Hey, can't win 'em all.

Songs that I got to preview which went over big at listening parties at record companies and/or studio sessions/clubs, and then bombed in the hands of the DJs (some never even given a fair shake, at least in NYC, I am talking):

    1) High On Love, Claire, Prelude
    2) I Wanna Make It On My Own, Evelyn Thomas, Casablanca
    3) Manhattan Love Song, King Errisson
    4) Danger, Gregg Diamond, TK
    5) Everybody Dancin', Players Association, Vanguard
    6) Plato's Retreat, Joe Thomas, TK (played, but not nearly as huge as expected)
    7) Life Is Music, Richie Family, Marlin
(Bobby DJ, previewed this at Infinity and the crowd begged for more - never heard it again after that night!)

Agreed. I love this one but it must've been a total flop; there are still plenty of sealed copies around today.

Hey Boodi or anyone else for that matter. I know that Cameo song "It's Serious." I just can't form the lyrics in my head. Can you help me here?

There weren't any lyrics, so to speak. They do chant "It's Serious" towards the end...It was really a great instrumental funk workout, driven by a powerful bass hook ....

When I was on the DJ roster at University, nothing worked unless it was Commercial Top 40 Disco.

Records that I remember playing that bombed particularly included:

    MANTUS - Dance It (Freestyle)
JB'S - Rock Groove Machine (they all booed that one !!!)
ALPHONSE MOUZON - By All Means
    CELI BEE - One Love

But I was always sneaky.... I found you could always get away with quality underground soul music when it came to slow jams!! They would dance to anything!!  The one I played the most was ROY AYERS and "You Send Me"
