I Got A New Salsoul Album

After being outbid on Ebay for the album "Salsoul Orchestra's Greatest Disco Hits: Music For Non-Stop Dancing", I was able to pick one up at GEMM--and it was worth it!! In fact, I paid less for it at GEMM than I did on Ebay (that poor sucker who outbid me spent 10 bucks more than I had to!!)

It was mixed by Walter Gibbons. It contains most of the Orchestra's best-known songs-- "Magic Bird Of Fire", "Getaway", "Salsoul 3001", "It's Good For The Soul", "Nice and Naasty"-- all segued together on two album sides. Granted, Walter Gibbons is no Tom Moulton when it comes to mixing style but I was very impressed with Walter's mixing of "It's Good For The Soul" into "Salsoul Rainbow": dramatic!! Also the drum break from "Magic Bird Of Fire" into the drum break from "It's Good For The Soul" was clever. Some didn't work as good, though, particularly "Don't Beat Around The Bush" into "Salsoul 3001", but I shouldn't complain since I love any album with mixed tracks and this is a good one.

I LOVE Salsoul Records' music more than anything else!!

These albums were released with tracks in their entire lenght, and so mixing (blending) was necessarily at the end of the track with the beginning of the other. Not always is possible to have perfect mixes with this restriction. The songs are segued, not beat mixed.
By the way, Tom Moulton was not a disco dj. He did the studio mix from the master tapes, while Gibbons in this records had to work on already released edits.

On the Gibbons album, I noticed some things about the records which makes me wonder if they were edited versions or came off of promo 12"s. Take the version of "Nice and Naasty" on this album. The intro at the beginning is lengthened on this album, and is used as a break to mix into the next song. "You're Just The Right Size" at the beginning sounds like it was recorded live for a few seconds until it goes into the recorded version. On "Don't Beat Around The Bush" you hear Charo saying "Cuchi Cuchi" during one part of the record. Were these added special effects or were they off of promo 12"s that the public couldn't buy at the store??

don't know exactly but u are right. They probably used the master tapes to record this record.
When releasing an edit, producers and (re)mixers had to choose from several mixes they have previously done. If you listen to the "Salsoul Gold Master Series" CDs you will notice different mixes than the original releases. Most of these different version were alternate mixes prepared at that time and never released commercially. Also there is some reconstruction work done by the Maestro Tom Moulton in the studio.

You are right about the edits--I listened to the Gold Masters Series Vol. 1. Personally, I think these "new"/edited versions can be downright awful at times because they sound so choppy and you can hear it immediately. On Vol. 1 of GMS, "Love Is You" by Carol Williams is very choppy. I hope that version wasn't released commercially because I didn't like it when I heard it. It's reminiscent of the 12" (7:40) version of Love And Kisses' "Thank God It's Friday", which was also choppy. I didn't like the 12" version at all, and prefer the 4:16 version on the soundtrack album. As for "Love Is You", I prefer the version from the Moulton-mixed "Disco Boogie" CD. Those songs were edits for the most part, but they sounded good and I didn't think they were choppy at all.
