What's up y'all? Another Friday come and gone with a nice Labor day weekend crowd starting their weekend with me @ The Ringside playing disco, funk and soul classics. Some of the memories spun this weekend were:

Holiday - Mandrill (In light of Labor day weekend)
    Lowdown - Boz Scaggs
Sunshower - Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
Let's start the dance - Hamilton Bohannon
Bubble Gum (I chewz you) - Captain Sky
I'll do anything for you - Denroy Morgan
One of them nights - Billy Ocean
The Magnificent dance - The Clash
Put your body in it - Stephanie Mills
Manhattan Skyline - David Shire (In light of 9/11 one year anniversary coming up)

On the mellow side, some of the songs played were,

Why can't we live together - Timmy Thomas (Also in light of 9/11 anniversary)
Let's stay together - Al Green
Thoughts of old flames - Pleasure
    Gentle - Frederick

Fun night for me and for those present. Hope these bring back nothing but positive memories. As always, love to hear your comments.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

P.S. - Blax and Jazz, you're first and second in the next round of 'D's. 'D' for defeated which is what you will be.

Nice to see you back, Sammy after your long weekend! And a great list as always!

Unusually I'll start with the slow jams as I know three out of four this time!

I promised you I would dig out that treasure track recommendation of yours, Sammy, and I did! That Pleasure track is first class - excellent choice!!  I played it all last weekend!

Love the sentiments with your Al Green and Timmy Thomas tracks. Two masterpieces in my opinion! With the anniversary of 9/11 just around the corner, two very poignant pieces of music!!

Didn't know the Frederick track ...

From the uptempo stuff, I will go with your Stephanie Mills track. Yep, you guessed it! - a great favourite with the Jazz Pilgrims!!

I know you love Captain Sky, Sammy, and I haven't heard that one in ages! A really good track, indeed. Serious Eighties funk!! (It was 80's, wasn't it??)

"Let's Start The Dance" was one of the earliest US tunes I heard and has good memories for me! You must have rocked the place with that one!!

"Manhattan Skyline" - love the sentiment once again. I really used to like Boz Scaggs from all those years ago, and I love his current (well, four months old) LP!!! The Clash...Hmm, interesting choice! Mixing it up, eh? I recall that got played in the soul clubs over here as well!! Bet Blax won't like it!!

    The rest I didn't know.

Looks like another good time was had by all

    Jazz:

Happy to hear you dug the list; I'm also very happy you enjoyed 'Thoughts of old flames'. Being a lover of great slow jams I knew you would find this one to be agreat one. I love this song. Another hidden gem is 'One day at a time' by Pockets on the same LP as 'Come go with me'. Just something you may also want to check out, if you haven't already. By the way, Captain Sky's 'Bubble Gum' was released in 1980. I'll wait to hear from both Blax's and your entries in our on-going battle.

    Hi Sammy and friends,

Loved the list (as always) buddy!!
I especially loved Bohannon, Stephanie Mills, Al Green and Denroy Morgan (I'll do, I'll do, I'll do-do-do-do-do-do!!) - Hey, much better than "Running Away"!!

Jazz, for your information, I like "The Clash". But, dont tell the others!!

Before my 'D'evastating list, my comments about Jazz's 'C':

I dont know the Lenny Williams' track, yet!
I'm not sure if I know the Whispers' track too! Wich LP it came from?? The title sounds familiar to me but, I cant remeber the song. Anyway, if it's from The Whispers........

    OK, my 'D's:

Disco Fever - Archie Bell & The Drells (FUNKY-FUNKY-FUNKY)

Dance Floor - Zapp (FUNKY-FUNKY-FUNKY)

OK, the 'D'emolition is over!!! Go home poeple!!

    Peace

So much for my brilliant 'C's. Blax didn't even know 'em.. :( The Whispers track was a very early one from around '76 I guess, and I don't have the LP. I don't have the track either on CD or vinyl... But it is DEFINITELY on my list...a real gem, IMHO

    The chorus (gloriously soulful) went

    "YOU CAN DO IT....
PUT YOUR MIND AND BODY TO IT...
    CAN'T DO WITHOUT LOVE!!"

Don't remember the Archie Bell track (touché!) but I do LOVE Zapp!!! :D excellent! Anything funky that Blax chooses - it must be good!! :D

I will pass on your Running Away comments, Blax! Suffice to say that I still remember your comments on Celine Dion!!!! Shall I dig them out  and post them for all the world to see????

    Onto my 'D's

First one is topical (has come up on a number of threads recently) and is brilliant!

Disco Lights - Dexter Wansell :D

and for my second D-licious track ...

    a D-isco monster from 1977!!

Devil's Gun - CJ and Co

Sammy - SHOOT YOUR SHOT!!!!

Great entries by the both of y'all. Zapp and Archie Bell & The Drells, hard to argue over anything by them Blax. I'm a little envious of Jazz though as 'Devil's Gun' was one of my choices and I was hoping to hit you with it. However, I am quite surprised, but appreciative, that neither of you listed what is arguably my favorite dance record. Nonetheless, time to 'D'estroy you two so here goes:

Doin' it to death - James Brown
    Disco nights - GQ

All I can say after that is, 'D'elicious, 'D'elightful and 'D'ivine; 'D'eal with it.

Oh man, this round was really tough!! Great calls from everybody!! But, Sammy I have to admit, "Doin To Death" smashed me!! OUCH!!
    And Disco Nights!! Wow!!

Jazz, "Devil's Gun" and Dexter Wansell too!!

    Who's the next?

    Peace

Blax, thanks for the comments. Jazz is next, followed by me, then you. Good luck going last with the 'E's.

Nice shot, Sammy! Of course, I left Disco Nights for ya! Glad you could have the pleasure of picking it! After all, I am an English gentleman!! What are you laughing at, Blax??

James Brown? Fantastic!! You could probably pick a song for him from each letter of the alphabet!!

So it's JP off first with the 'E's ...

    How about:

Expansions - Lonnie Liston Smith. Yet another veritable JP's classic that has stood the test of time!!

    And then:

'E' into Easy - Brothers by Choice. A mid-70's funk classic from the 80's rare groove period in England. Easily the most expensive 7" I ever bought! And the hole in the middle is slightly out of syc, so the record wobbles a bit !

After that lot, I'm in 'E'cstasy!!

    Jazz:

Nice call on some high quality obscure tracks. Lonnie Liston Smith, I should have known he would be huge with the Jazz Pilgrims. Not sure if I know the Brothers by Choice track, but sounds very interesting. Now onto to continue my 'E'xecution of you and Blaxman with the following 'E'xcellent 'E'ntries:

Everything's coming up love - David Ruffin (I know Jazz is feeling this one)
Express - B.T. Express (A classic to steamroll my way to victory)

I think my two choices speak for themselves. 'E'xcruciating to the two of you, but 'E'xciting to me. Let's see if you can compete with that Blaxman. By the way, next round I am first followed by Blax, then Jazz.

    'E'asy,

Sammy, I make Jazz's words my own words!!

Jazz, I'm really curious about that Brothers by Choice too!! Sounds very good!!

Now, let's stop the congratulations and let's go to my 'E'xuberant list:

Every Dream I Dream Is You - The Trammps

    Early Years - Barry White

Two love songs, huh? That's not my specialty but, I know you will like them when you know them.

    P.S.
I decided keep my strongest weapons to the next rounds.

    Next!

Doctor Love, Nutty Professor, well you guys have me confused. :???: Nontheless Blax, The Trammps and Barry White, heavyweights for sure. Now seeing that you are saving your better ammo for the next rounds and seeing there are so many songs that begin with 'F', I suggest we list three entries for this round. If not, it is okay by me, however, I will list three to 'F'inish you guys for sure. Now for my 'F'antastic list:

    Funk-O-Nots - The Ohio Players
Forget me nots - Patrice Rushen
Float on - The Floaters (Classic slow jam)

'F'unky F'resh to continue my string of 'F'antastic hits in this battle.

I am curious to see what you guys come back with.

When you read the explanations, you will probably never want to talk to us again!!!!

As for your 'F's - Float On - I love that slow jam!! Forgets Me Knots - great choice!! Love that tune - was very big in Germany when I was studying there ...
Don't know that particular Ohio PLayers tune ....

What's happening in the Blaxcave?? It's mayhem in there this afternoon!!!! :???:

'G'et ready to get rocked because here I come with the 'G' force. But, first let me comment on your entries. Blaxman, I just knew you were going to list 'Getaway' by Earth, Wind & Fire; That was a given and a great one at that. Jazz, I was very surprised you did not know this track, a huge hit for this monster group. You definitely have to build up that Earth, Wind & Fire collection. The three CD box set, is good, however, it does not include alot of the songs that were on LP's that were not singles, yet were turned into hits by urban black radio. As we discussed on another topic, alot of these songs are actually better than the hits and this is one group that personifies that. By the way Jazz, The Moments & Whatnauts; Nice! An obscure classic for sure. Now to my 'G'ood, 'G'reat, 'G'lorified entries:

Get ready for the future - The Winners (A funky fave of mine from '78)
Gloria - Enchantment (Another classic slow jam from the real Doctor Love)

and a bonus track since I'm last this round,

Give up the funk - B.T. Express

Give up the battle because once again I hit you with the 'G'usto.

Next round it's Jazz, followed by me then Blax. I can just imagine where Jazz is going with 'H's.

Well, Sammy, an excellent choice of 'G's! BT Express - trying to take away my Black Belt in Funk?

But I am also a Black Belt in jazz!!! so without further ado ...

    Hard Work - John Handy
Harlem River Drive - Bobbi Humphries

    Now we are talking class!!

Class indeed! Nice choices Jazz, you defintely lived up to your name here. I dig both these tracks as I am familiar with John Handy and you know how I feel about 'Harlem River Drive' since I played it on my first spin @ your BBQ. By the way, Ijust took another turn on the wheels at the BBQ, hope you liked what I played. But enough of that because a battle is on and I am ready to 'H'ammer you and Blaxman with the 'H'ot choices:

    High - Skyy (Love it)
Hi-Tension - Hi-Tension (Jazz I figured this was yours for sure)

and to continue my argument as the true Doctor Love,

Have you seen her - The Chi-Lites

'H'a,'h'a,'h'a or   . I love this battle. Blaxman, your next if you dare.

    Easy,
