New York City 1977 vs. today

In 1977 Carter was president and NYC was run by Democrats. Today we have a Republican president and NYC and NY state are run by Republicans.

I haven't been to NYC in 30 years. In the '70s it was a dirty crime ridden urban slum where anything and everything was available. Have no idea what it's like today.

NYC is in much better shape today than it was in 1977. Mayor Koch saved the city in the late 1970s. He was followed by the disaster called David Dinkins who managed to undo in 4 years all the good that took Koch 12 years to give us.

Mayor Giuliani really saved the city for the 2nd time in the 1990s. Our current Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a competent if a bit distant administrator.

I was living in a relatively quiet Brooklyn neighborhood in 1977. No looting during the blackout but you could the slow decline setting in. By 1990 it was a rundown more dangerous area.

I was born & raised in NYC and I missed the grittiness of NY in the 70's. Back then, the five boroughs was a tossed salad of cultures unlike today with real estate moguls removing old landmarks and reconstructing entire neighborhoods so they can build luxury condos. Don't get me wrong, I can do without the hookers, pimps, perverts & pushers on 8th ave however the middle class in getting sand kicked in the face. The rich people didn't give NYC its definition, its the mixture of poor and middle class that gave NYC its flavor.

911 just jacked up everything! We can't walk on certain streets anymore corners have metal bars and cement boulders on them to keep truck bombs out - like that's gonna stop a terrorist.

I still love the city but I don't like what has become of it. Times Square looks like Disney World - which is nice.....who needs peep shows and xxx theaters. The night life is okay well that mayor oh excuse me those disasters name Rudy Guiliani & David Bloomberg has pushed most of the clubs near the Hudson River and caused havoc on other residents- rumor has it that the city want to end club hours at 2am....OMG!

Someone mentioned the series "The Bronx is Burning" you have no idea how nostalgic that movie is. I grew up in the Bronx and we had our good and bad times. I would like to explain why all of the buildings were burning unfortunately, it would become very political so I will not go there. On that note, I have errands to run so this topic is to be continue..........

We get very political on this board all the time! Many NYC landlords back in the 1970s either abandoned their buildings or burned them down for the insurance money. Many apartment dwellers burned themselves out of their apartments to get ahead on the waiting list for the housing projects.

In the 1970s The City of New York had an unofficial policy of "planned shrinkage". That simply meant that poorer areas in severe decline like the South Bronx, Bushwick or East New York would get minimal city services. My Brooklyn neighborhood was very middle-class back then, so we received adequate city services. Our trash was picked up twice a week and our street was swept 4 days a week.
