...ya gotta beat the street......
Finally, at last, a TRUTHFUL and accurate peek at the famed Studio 54, one that shows what really went on in that "frenzied vortex" and the center of the nightlife on this planet in 1979: NOT MUCH. The way you see it in those clips is the way it was: childish scenes of rejection at the door and inside, people just sitting around, wandering about aimlessly with blank expressions on their faces, and trying to dance to music they did not enjoy. You can clearly see how those shown "dancing" try so hard to show that they are having a wild and crazy time, but of course they weren't fooling anyone. The majority of those boringly polyestered/ridiculously costumed saddos jerking spasmodically on the most famous floor of the world - like the man shown dressed as a what, a stuffed turkey? - really had no sense of rhythm. They were just moneyed, stoned or "well" dressed in Halston Cucci Fiorucci, that's all. One guy in a punk outfit is shown doing what could be described as dancing, and to make all of it, the camera stays on him for several minutes. So, so much for Studio 54. The real ACK-SHON sure was elsewhere back then. Like look at that Sylvester video of for "Dance Disco Heat" for a glimpse of real disco vibes circa 1979: feverish moves, twirling colours, throbbing sounds, infectious energy all night long etc.
:D
It looks quite sad really. Obviously a slow night. And they're 'dancing' to The Bombers. Not one of my faves. :???:
Seems the "twirl" was the step in fashion back in 79 :p
Was that punk the basis for Adrien Brody's character in SUMMER OF SAM? LOL
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

I was disappointed too when I viewed this . I thought "gee, was the way I remembered it (the disco days ... not Studio 54 --- never went there ) an exaggeration of passing time ?)
But now I realize its this particular presentation that is weak .....the poor sound quality ....the under presentation of the lights ..... . I have to think that this filming took place under special circumstances... permitted on a reallly slow night or something .... because within this footage you can see one other cameraman resting his camera on his shoulder... up close in people's faces ... and I don't think this would've gone over too well on a regular night ......
Anyway ...SURELY ... Studio 54 was more exciting than this clip represents. Here's another example :

I think this footage , even though just fixed on Nicky .... better captures its flavour ... the thumping .... the crowd noise and the response when seguing into THE BOSS ...... edit: ( just relistened to it loud and that happy crowd sound gave me goosebumps )
A better sense of the bee-hive atmosphere I remember clubs being.

Remmy, my dear, I have A question for Ya!
After 3 minutes you see a waiter passing by.
Now, where are the semi-nude hot boys with tight boxers that I saw in the pic "54" and who were serving da booz??????
And where's the bumpin' and grinding the Studio was famous for????
In my fantasy this disco was the ultramaxx of decadence. When I look @ this clip I see a nerdy party with people that could be Microsoft software developers. I want Titties, I want 'S' and I want it NOW!!!

He went by much too fast to comment, Skoot ().
But also right then at say 2 :50 .. watch as a broad dressed like a prairie pioneer .... pops a quick pill then gulps her drink just as she crosses the camera !:icon_surprised:
(I'm sure it was just an aspirin for that headache from that long version of GET DANCIN .)
By the way ... I think this video works much better with the sound off ....
But if its tits and warpaint ya wants Skoot () ......its back to: APACHE !!!

That first clip looks like some type of 'Promo' filming was going on, (the blonde chick looks like a vip ), probably on an off night, any ways, many popular clubs most of time were only pumping on all cylinders on Fridays and Saturdays, with maybe Wednesday during the week, spinning record during the off nights was many times very boring.:-?
In that second clip Nicky is working that EQ hard.8-)
In the clip with Nicy Siano, what is the first song played (the big-bandish tune). It kicks!
"Everyone knows the real reason why you got that part it was the time you spent on that casting couch"--Antoine Merriwether
"Excuse me, Miss Thing, but both of us spent time on that couch"--Blaine Edwards

You've got to be there at the end of the day. Videos cannot convey the atmosphere properly. :-(
I always thought is was common knowledge that studio 54 was not all that great
The real fun was at the roller skating establishments

That is NOT the Studio 54 of my imagination. What a disappointment. The people who were turned away at the door should consider themselves lucky.
And what's with the dirty floor? Looked like a sporting stadium after a big game.
Shocked,
Tim Tam
I suppose we should bear in mind that (apparently) there are no 'stars' in there on that night. Like Diana, Grace, Sylvester, and Mick and Bianca et al. The atmosphere was no doubt electric on those nights they appeared. No doubt the video camera would've been banished to keep certain person's preferences secret.

I would never have got in. I consider that a badge of honour.

WaIT just one minute here! I was regular at STUDIO (ok irregular, call me what you want) but check out the people .. check out the clothes.. and CHECK out the FLOOR. Its XENON!!!!!!!!! That is NOT STUDIO. (of course it is OUTSIDE) Studio in its heyday had small square parquet wooden tiles for the dance floor, not long strips until after like in the 80's. or 90's. Not when STEVE owned it. Plus that transvestite GYPSY ( he/she pronounced it YIPSEE, remember? wouldjump UP HIGH to those side speakers and you can see someone else jumping and dancing on them, STUDIO did NOT HAVE those. I know you all think I am nuts but I never did drugs and I REMEMBER... I would LOVe to hear comments about this comment. I was there. Please don't forget that. I paid attention to details. OK new subject... where ( other than eBay ) can I find, is it SING SING SING by the BROADS? Didn't we all just love it when they blasted it there... the place went nuts. Now why cant we all pull our money and re-open the place? Todays crowd just wouldn' t know what to do. sorry for any typos.. Im tired and not in the mood to correct any.
First off, look that ' 54 party' seemed to be ' some model party in 79' (look at the backdrops).... so it was obviously a 'photo shoot' excercise, with 'models' showing off for the crew...whether 54 or not i don't know, but I would imagine it was not a BIG night, and that the video recording did not do justice to the lighting (and certainly not the sound or atmosphere)....
Now on to the 'updated' Remicks version...I CANNOT believe this was 54, and certainly not in the 70's...Nicky looked like that last year when in London!!!!...
Sorry but you guys need to check the info more clearly.
Twinpines is ABSOLUTELY correct... the dancefloor scenes were shot at Xenon. A good way to verify is by the shot of the "mothership" lights in the center of the ceiling (while it was still working...lol). This is a very early video of Xenon. Unfortunately, this video was probably shot at a party on a Wednesday night, as that was not a good example of the normal Xenon crowd. I was a regular at Xenon from late 78 - the (sad) day it closed in 84. It was much more fun than that video depicts...but again, Twinpines is correct. It seems the video is splicing two separate nights/parties. One part of this video was shot outside and inside of Studio, where Steve Rubell is being interviewed towards the end of the video. But the dancefloor scenes in this viedo are most definitely shot at Xenon.Orginally posted by twinpines

Very interesting guys! This vid was labeled as all Studio 54! Can other people confirm that the inside views are from Xenon's?
As I mentioned in a reply before this one: it strucks me that the waiters are not in shorts but they wear French robes. So maybe it really is Xenon's????? Nicky?

The bottom picture is a great contrast between wild speaker-dancers and some supposed very refined "onlookers"...LOL... That is a great pic, thanks for posting.
What you're looking at in this pic is Xenon stage-right (looking towards stage it was on your left) as you entered the dancefloor. The DJ booth was just above where those people are seated. There was a water fountain and make-shift bleacher-type seating around the corner to the right of the speaker-dancers. Also, the entrance to Peppo's (one of the owners) private office was behind the water fountain. Wow what great memories that brings back.. Thanks again.
Mike
Well, after all those comments, I think Ill pass on watching them!
Ive seen that "dance disco heat" video someone mentioned, and want to think of disco that way:icon_razz:
