Hi folks, this is a nightmare.
    JUST CURIOUS!
Due to my poor english sometimes I ask myself the real meaning of some song titles.... even if I check in the dictionnary I cannot find the real meaning... son what those means???
    1. Boogie down and mess around (by Blackwell)
    2. Doin' the dog (by Creme d' Cocoa)
    3. Johnson Jumpin' (by Johnson Products)(?)

And just another question.... when there's the "groove" is always referred to the vinyl grooves or does it mean some other things??
    - The groove (R. franklin)
    - Still in the groove (by Raydio)
    - Check out this groove (B. Thurston)
    .........
    and so and so..

    Thanks....

Masdefi: I'm English and some of the (black) American slang leaves me searching for a meaning. You are not alone.
One thing I can solve though is your reference to 'Groove'. A groove is basically the 'feel' of a track or can mean when a record or bunch of records is repetitive so that an overall good feeling is achieved. To groove is to really get into a record or records and really enjoy. I don't think it has any sexual connotations, but I could be wrong.

Groove can mean so many things

Like really getting "down" and lost into the music that playing at the moment.....Also, songs like "Shake Your Groove Thing," is about dancing your ass off...of course, now people say things early in the morning such as "I got to get my groove thing into gear" which is essentially saying "getting your ass out of bed" The song, Boogie Down and Mess Around" is about dancing and romancing.

I've never heard this song by this group BUT, if they're following the line of the 60's (late 50's?) r&b hits, "The Dog" and "Walking the Dog", by Rufus Thomas, then they're singing about a dance. The 'dog' was an overtly sexual dance where you would mimic the actions of the male dog mounting the female from behind. It was very raunchy, to say the least. I remember most parents prohibiting their kids to do it, mine included. Maybe Creme d' Cocoa is just singing about sex.

Masdefi, I am in same situation as you, some expressions often used doesn't mean much to me.
In late eighties, "Jack" was often used in titles like:
"Jack me till I start to scream" (this one gives me a good hint )
    "The Jack that house built"
(I understand that Metallica has done this one: "The house that Jack built")
Jack to the sound of the underground
    Jack your body
    Jack the house
    Can u dance (bonus Jack)

Does anyone know what does Jack means ?

Nicky, first of all try to hear this song, it's a very nice song and I love it soooo much! I have placed it at 15th place on my top 25 for the new top500.
Then I think you're right, I can understand the lyrics as follows:
    .....
    doin' the dog
    push, push, push
    .......
    and so on.....!

    Thank you guys!
    Two more:
    - let's get it together (el coco)
    - get down (raydio)

Problem: the verb "to get" has a lot of different meanings.....
    Thanks again

Hi Masdefi......Since El Coco was so short on lyrics with this number....my always feelings for this song meant that they were talking about "getting together to make love."...Raydio wants to dance, boogie and make love later.....

It's not Spanish, I mean, "corrida" could refer to "corrida de toros" (you know the thing Spaniards do with their bulls) and also is sex lingo for "coming" (correrse). But "ai" means nothing in my language (fonetically sounds like "I"). No = not.
So the translation would be: "I'm not ejaculating"?

    Well Nano,

Chas Jankel, an Englishman, originally wrote & recorded that tune...so there's no telling what he meant. I always assumed it was Spanish--I never bothered to ask anyone what it meant.

    DUH!!!!!

A figment of Chas Jankel's mind methinks. Or could it be Japanese?

    Masdefi,

First, thanks for an interesting topic. What seems so simple to us in English (like, "get down")... never realized it could be causing such grief to others.

Second, "Ai No Corrida". Just like Marky, I thought all my Spanish-speaking friends knew what this was about. I just liked the song and never cared about a translation. Now I want to know just what language is it, if it's one at all.

the one I found most amusing here is Johnson Jumping by Johnson Products. I cannot believe someone didn't comment on this. Maybe there is more good taste here than I originally thought!

I am assuming that Johnson Jumping, put in a good way, would be going from man to man. Johnson is a black slang word for a penis, so, literally, Johnson Jumping would be jumping from penis to penis....unless there is a new aerobics exercize out there that I'm not aware of.

Perhaps it somehow ties to Ai no Corrida (1976) (aka In the Realm of the Senses)

I'm pretty sure that its Japanese, because sadly i watched to many anime, so yes its japanese, a lot of J-Pop artists use english and Japanese in their songs like this one does.(if im wrong correct me) and it just seems like a japanese line, and i remember hearing "Ai", and "No" in the japanses language but "Corrida", i cant recall...ill try to find out .

Re: Songs titles.....? What's the meaning....?

I always understood the title to be a reference to that Japanese film, which is considered an artsy, yet sexually explicit, film. The ending is particularly memorable, in a not so nice way. You can watch clips of the film on youtube (I don't think I'd be allowed to post links here).

The meaning of "Ai No Corrida":

In Peninsular Spanish slang "corrida" means also "ejaculation"; but I'm not sure Jankel knew that: it would have been "No hay corrida" (there is no ejaculation).
