As I have said before, we are very lucky in London as we have a good choice of underground Seventies soul, funk, disco and jazz on the airwaves, as well as the usual commercial disco music.

The list you mentioned is fairly typical of commencial radio stations, but there are some goood tunes in there!!

Whispers And the beat goes on
Odyssey Going back to my roots (though I have just picked up the Lamont Dozier original)
O'Jays Now that we found love
Indeep Last night a DJ saved my life
Dennis Edwards Don't look any further - now that is quality!!!

But as for Eurythmics, Kylie, Tom Jones etc ...

in New York City, we have the old 92 WKTU which was the start of classic Disco here in this country - it got revived a few years ago 103.5 WKTU playing mostly the Classics but due to competition and all that advertisers looking for the young folks influence, now they play mostly current disco and house and a few rappers if they make it into the Pop Top 10 ....they play OUR music here and there....They also have classic soul from the 70's but lately that too has been somewhat watered down to attract the kids as well.

As far as the HOT 107:

Don't remember if I ever heard #34....Hated #46 and anything by Paula Abdul....and Billie Jean - #1 ?????? Classic Disco? One of the reasons I really didn't care for 1983 was too much M.J. saturation....that song was way overrated, IMHO.

Hmm. there'e some oddities in there!
Two local stations play disco broadcasting to my area.
Wave 105 FM Saturday night 6-12 - The glitz mix
mostly commercial disco but with the odd gem here and there. I'm thinking of trying to get a 20 minute megamix type of spot, 'cos i have 1000s of Disco 12". Wonder if they'd go for it?
Capital Gold AM station - heard about 1 minute of it once so don't really know any more.
Sadly I cannot pick up any of the London stations.

    Sutnop,

The best radio show in London is on Jazz Fm on Friday nights from 10pm through to 1pm, with a DJ who was very well known in London in the Seventies. The format is: first hour - jazz, second hour - get down and boogie, third hour - soulful side

Thought you might be interested, so on Friday I wrote down what Greg Edwards played on his show. Gives you an idea of some of the music available on the airways in London...

I only got the first two hours - I intended to record the third hour but must have forgotten to press the record button ...

    First hour - Jazz
TANIA MARIA - Come With Me
    WEATHER REPORT - Birdland
HIROSHI FUKUMARA - Hunt Up Wind
    AZYMUTH - Jazz Carnival
    EDDIE HENDERSON - Prance On
GEORGE DUKE - Brazilian Love Affair
DONALD BYRD - Love Has Come Around
    HERBIE MANN - Hijack

Second hour - get down and boogie stuff
MAZE - Back In Stride Again
    RICK JAMES - Glow
CHANTAL CURTIS - Get Another Love
OLIVER CHEATHAM - Get Down Saturday Night (7")
JACKSONS - Shake Your Body Down To The Ground (remix)
GEORGE BENSON - Give Me The NIght
FUNKADELIC - One Nation Under A Groove
    SHALAMAR - There It Is
GQ - Disco Nights (Rock Freak)

Not bad at all, especially the jazz hour!!

A lot of these songs get a good flogging on Australian retro radio over in my area especially "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

Anyhow I like most of these songs except a few and they aren't from the disco era either. And some of the ones I don't listen too much even though I like them is because retro radio in my area has belted the **** out of them.

Speaking of ABBA, in Australia in the 70's especially 1976 it was ABBA FEVER!!! My mother told me that back then she was listening to radio the little teeny boppers were constantly requesting ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! ABBA!!! My mother got so sick of them. And also I heard that on the Aussie TV pop show "Countdown" in 1976 "Finando" was at No.1 for so many weeks that they got sick of showing the clip so they stopped playing the clip despite it was still No.1 and played something else. They did the same thing in 1979 with Patrick Hernandez's "Born To Be Alive". Even today on retro radio I hear ABBA a lot, I don't mind ABBA but they just get played too much and when music is played too much you sort of get less interested in them. I've got a lot of Top Of The Pops episodes on video and as it seems UK was also struck by ABBA fever and "Finando" was at No.1 for weeks in 1976 and they showed the clip on Top Of The Pops for weeks too  .

Australia mate! The land of many great funkateers!
