Bobby Orlando and Patrick Cowley… Canadian Disco?

    In the thread:

Some History of Italo-Disco (Capishe forum)
    http://capishe.topcities.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4973

There is a group of Croatians that say that IN THEIR COUNTRY, Bobby and Patrick are considered Canadian Disco.

Even after I provided evidence that the two guys belong to Hi NRG, they still insist in their belief.

I told them I don’t care what they think in their country, I only don’t want readers to get wrong information, but…

What do YOU think are Bobby Orlando and Patrick Cowley, Canadian Disco or Hi NRG?

Bobby 'O and Patrick Cowley are not Canadian Disco (or even Italo-Disco) and never have been. This wrong classification by a small minority (in a small country no less) is simply due to the fact that they probably couldn't acquire the original U.S. records so they got the Canadian pressings from Unidisc... and mistakingly assumed the artists were also Canadian. Anyone who truly knows their music would NEVER call them Canadian Disco.

It's the same when I see some misguided people classify Alisha of "All Night Passion" and "Baby Talk" fame as Italo-Disco when in fact she is a Jewish girl from Brooklyn, New York! Alsiha, Modern Talking... is NOT Italo-Disco.

:lol: Bernie .....I think you sound like me here !! ....;)

I think your theory sounds right . Canadian pressing = Canadian disco.
It could also be ... as with Italo disco .... that in some regions the term "Canadian" disco is being applied to a particular "sound " regardless of the tunes true origins. This to me is as silly as calling soul out of Detroit , Chicago or anywhere else USA as Northern (England) soul !!!!

The most easy way to identify Canadian artists is that Canadian copies will have a round logo with the letters MAPL in it. This indicates to radio stations (which are required by law to play a certain percentage of Canadian Content) that it's Canadian material.

30% of Canadian broadcast must be Canadian.

That's why Much Music sucks about 25% of the time. Except at 5:30 am.

It reminds me of how I've heard a lot of people refer to German NRG stuff as 'Asian New Wave' even though it's not from Asia and it's not New Wave. I guess because it was really big among Asian-American communities in California. A good friend of mine worked at one of the big dance import stores in San Francisco in the 80s and he told me that's what most of their customers called groups like Sandra, C.C. Catch, Fancy, Blue System, and Bad Boys Blue.

As a Canadian myself ; I think this is quite funny !!

In the late 70's ; the MONTREAL sound was big with artists like FRANCE JOLI,FREDDIE JAMES,GERALDINE HUNT,LIME,NANCY MARTINEZ,GINO SOCCIO and co ; TONY GREEN & GINO SOCCIO productions were considered to have a Canadian disco sound.

I think it might have to do with the whole UNIDISC distribution rights for the world.

But to these ears BOBBY "O" represents the HiNRG east coast guard ; with his very patented sound and his many productions. And PATRICK COWLEY was the king of the SF guard. The whole MOBY DICK,MEGATONE crew are NOT Canadian despite their UNIDISC association.

That's not very nice GreatestDancer. Why aren't you watching American TV if you don't like 25% of what MuchMusic plays? You've got VH1 and MTV.

Alright, I apologize. MTV and VH1 can suck as much, if not more than MuchMusic. I watch MuchMusic when in Vancouver. I don't have the fancy cable with MuchMusic. And, because the rest of what MM plays isn't bad. It's the 25% I am talking about. Nevermind, it was a joke that got a little lost in the fray...
