    Question Forgotten Heroes? ROY AYERS

A man that is not frequently mentioned on the board. The master of the cool grooves and Jazzy Funkrhythms and he made some slammin' floorfillers.

Roy Ayers shouldn't really be a forgotten hero, in the 70's he recorded some fantastic stuff i should know i have a copy of all his Polydor singles. He came to a local music festival in the mid 90's and stole the show.

Roy Ayres often comes to London to perform and over the years I must have seen him about a dozen or so times at various venues, both largish & small. My absolute favourite track of his is Running Away , although Everybody Loves The Sunshine is a great track. Probably the best compilation album of his is A Shining Symbol although there is no Sanctified Feeling on it, another awesome track...

His tunes were often played in the clubs and Discos of London BITD....

Two standout ballads from the 1987 LPI'm the one for your love tonight were "Don't you ever turn away" and "Let me love you" which was a duet with Chandra Currelli.

"Don't stop the feeling" was my favorite groover by him from the disco era.

His most consistent albums IMO were the quality Virgin Ubiquity and the sequel Virgin Ubiquity II. They were unreleased until just a few years ago and contain stuff he did while at Polydor from 1975-81 but was shelved for one reason or another.

I did however not like what I heard from some more recent releases like Virgin Ubiquity: remixed or Mahogany Vibes which featured remakes and guest appearancs by Betty Wright and Eryka Badu.

"Running away" was never an absolute favorite of mine. It was just a bit repetitive.

    Chillington:

Try those 2 aforementioned ballads from his 1987 set called I'm the one for your love tonight. It rivals most of his 70's output.

I love "Fever", "Sweet Tears" and "Get on up, get on down" in addition to others mentioned above; these three songs seem to not get mentioned much.

    Re: Forgotten Heroes? ROY AYERS

I discovered him in the late Nineties thanks to Erykah Badu's wonderful version of "Searchin'" in her Live album. I have a Polydor compilation called The Best of Roy Ayers. It's only one CD but it has round all tracks mentioned here.
I guess I should try some early-70's material, the least represented in this disc.
    My faves:

-Love will bring us back together
    -Everybody loves the sunshine
    -Searchin'

and his versions of "We live in Brooklyn baby" and Bobby Caldwell's "What you won't do for love".
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

Complete 'master of the groove' IMHO!
Have to go along with Eddie on the two previously un-released Virgin Ubiquity comp/albums on BBE ..God only knows why this material was shelved at the time?

One track from thousands that I keep returning too is:
Don't Let Our Love Slip Away (LP No Stranger To Love Polydor 1979)
..& a few others not mentioned:

    Mystic Voyage
    And Don't You Say No
    Turn Me Loose
    Freaky Deaky
    Our Time Is Coming
    Goree Island

& of couse the 'SoulBoys' fav ..For Real, from his project with Wayne Henderson (Step Into Our Life - Polydor 1978), covering the Flowers standard to almost perfection!

His production/song writing skills on Sylvia Striplin's You Can't Turn Me Away can't be ignored either and I was impressed with the 'hook-up' with Masters At Work a few years ago.

The man must be the second hardest working man in showbizness ..coz he's never off the circuit;o))

To see him live is a must!!!

    Maximum RESPECT!!

I always really liked 'Dont Stop The Feeling' - great groove, and his '83 track 'Chicago' was unfairly ignored by many.

Agree about 'Chicago' ..great choon; moody as hell.

Yeah 'Chicago' is great, so was a track called 'Gotta Find A Lover', I forget which album that's on because I don't have it any more unfortunately. As far as albums go I really like 'You Send Me' which has tracks like Rhythm and Can't You See Me. I'm not forgetting Roy Ayers writing and production either like 'Give Me Your Love' by Sylvia Striplin and 'Turned Onto You' by Eighties Ladies. He must have made about 45 or 50 albums I guess.
