That's funny Paul, I think the same way about that track and ended up obtaining it on the Various artists compilation Old School Jams Volume 5. I bought that set for Vaughn Mason's "Jammin' big guitar".
Just a quickie 8-)
Did you and/or do you dance to Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club? I've always had mixed feelings about it. It was just ok to me and I never danced to it because it's beat was in the twilight zone. Too slow compared to other uptempo songs yet too fast when compared to most ballads. I think I remember hearing it in the clubs though.
I don't have it in my collection and I thought about buying it for the sake of completion but then I realize I don't like it that much

Ditto.
Jammin' Big Guitar is another record that I'm ambivalent about. Overall it has a great funky vibe and then.......and then the whole thing is ruined.........is ruined by the lacklustre chorus, which is so syrupy sweet and shows up his vocals as being very, very poor.
Generally though, I love the feel of the track and the double entendre of the lyrics.
BTW: Genius of Love was definitely played as a dancer in UK clubs.
this song clocking at 104 BPM and many others like "Don't stop the music" 100 BPM by Yarbrough and People were perfect to play out of a ballad set or to change gears after peaking on a High energy bpms set.
I remember packed dance floors and hands in the air
I think there is an exact instrumental on the flip of a Rap version on Profile Records, I forgot by whom![]()
I much prefer 'Wordy Rappinghood'.
...ya gotta beat the street......
To me, GENIUS OF LOVE defines CLUB SLEAZE---that druggy, overtly sexual time of the morning when you can't dance fast anymore-- yet you can't leave the dancefloor and go home. These types of beats brought out the lusty rutting-on-the-dancefloor--groin-thrusting, bootylicious moves in the dance crowd. Have I said too much?:icon_twisted:
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Go ahead and tells us more of what you were doing in the clubs Marky ;-)

I liked that instantly. I even have the Grandmaster Flash 12" that samples it. Very infectuous electrobeat. "Suboceana" is another great jam from the 2 talking heads. "Wordy rappinghood" never pleased me, too Sesame Street!
Paul, did you ever dance to "Once In A Lifetime"? I DID!!!

Chanson was a classic @ 106 BPM. Packed my dance floor and it 'felt good'.
I had never seen the "Genius of love" clip before. It rocks! 8)
Bohannon! Bohannon! Bohannon! Of course we danced to that!
BTW, the guitar on this track is played by Adrian Belew. He even claims the melody is his. He was thrown out of the band by Chris & Tina, who had stated from the beginning that this was a group project. They even erased a guitar solo from this track that was "maybe the best solo I had recorded by then" (Belew's words).
All in the name of funk!
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
Didn't that irritating bint Mariah Carey sample 'Genius Of Love' in recent years?
...ya gotta beat the street......
Yes Sandra I believe She did.....
and in the video she THRUST and GRIND? and thrust and ground lustily, as tho' rutting-on-the-dancefloor--the thrusting, bootylicious moves of her massive false mammaries was just like..... a female Marky :D
Vernon Burch has some great grooves - both mentioned here I like, and Genius of love WAS big in UK clubs.
oh I drop one little morsel of my dancing past memories and all of a sudden I'm a big cow riding a fire hydrant on the dance floor!!! THE NERVE!!!!:lol::icon_twisted::icon_twisted::icon_twisted:
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Genius of Love - Rollerskating Classic - a lot of the slow/mid tempo stuff- catagorized as "sleaze" here on the site, was perfect for us rollers back in the day (and now) fast enough to keep you moving, with enough thump to keep you jumping. A lot of DJ's in the rinks today, don't really understand how dangerous they make it, trying to play songs faster than 120 bpm, when you've got 100-200 people all trying to keep the beat while moving in a enclosed "oval" that's usually when the bodies start flying....:-)
I keep my groove going to songs like this, It Ain't no Big Thing (Donna MGee), or Let's Get it Together (Love Exchange), or Trans Europe Express (Kraftwerk) or the like.
