Jean Carne "Was That All It Was"

The fabulous Jean Carne made what is possibly my favourite record ever 'Was That All It Was' which happily falls into the remit of these forums !

I have a question for the board...there's a later UK Streetwave released 12" mix of the song which is not really a remix but a long version with just over a minute more of Jeans fantastic voice and the strings and syndrums. It's credtied as being the 'US Remix' but is it actually on a US 12" ?

    Simon,

My copy of the Jean Carn promo 12" appears in the Record Vault Discography section of this site. Not sure if it is different from the UK Streetwave release.

The following CDs include this song with times:
    1. Mighty Real: Morning Music 6:30
    2. Orginal Disco Selection 3:23
    3. Philadelphia Uncovered 6:28
    4. Grand 12 Inches 2 6:32

Cheers Bernie. The original UK 12" is the same time (6.30) as your nice US promo copy there.. the Streetwave version comes in at a minute and a bit longer and I suspect is different.

I have a copy of Jean Carnes "21 Legandary Tracks" double album on Streetsounds(1986) and the version on it is 7:44. Although i've always liked the track it's been overplayed locally, these days i'd rather play "Free Love" & "If You Wanna Go Back".

That's the version Tony..I think a mate of mine did the compilation ! But I can't work out if it was ever released in the States originally.

I like anything by Jean..she recorded a track here in the UK a few years ago..a very nice midtempo dance song called 'If You Believe' which might interest some.

I also love Ms.Carn's 'WTAIW' but equally as good from that same LP is 'Whats On Your Mind' & 'Lonely Girl In A Cold World'. 8) Such a pity that the Philly stuff from that time was often not pushed or marketed sufficiently. From the same year was Dexter Wansell's 'Ill Never Forget My Favourite Disco' which should've been huge.

Absolutely Tony, and don't forget "Time Waits For No One"
from the same LP.There was also a later track that should
have gotten play called "I Just Thought Of A Way"-can't
    remember the LP though.

I don't find you rude. I've just not heard of that track; I'm not familiar with everything Jean Carn did; which LP is it on & what year?:???:

From '78 I think...from the 'Happy To Be With You' album although I don't think it shows Jean's vocal talents off to best effect in that it's a bit to pacey and poppy for me. I rather like 'No No You Can't Come Back Now' from that album.

Re: Jean Carne "Was That All It Was"

Jean Carn (she added the last "e' later ala Dionne WarwickE--it's the numerology thang once again :o)--was so under-rated....her work at Philly International in the late Seventies was so damn good. :-D:-D:-D

WAS THAT ALL IT WAS? -the extended 12" version-- is her MASTERPIECE, IMHO. But so many of the other tracks are excellent also...let's not forget DON'T LET IT GO TO YOUR HEAD, in addition to others already mentioned.

She also did a great cover of LET'S STAY TOGETHER on a Bobby M (Mitello) LP from the early 80s....

Re: Jean Carne "Was That All It Was"

I've been digging thru a pile of my albums jokeingly called a filing system, what did i find a very early Jean Carn LP. Infact it's Doug & Jean Carn (Ex husband i think) "Higher Ground" it'sa Jazz Fusion lp with Ronnie Laws & others on Ovation Records. It says 1976 on the sleeve ,no way is it that late. Jean has a big afro and looks very young,it's probably early 70's a re-issue to cash in on her Philly sales. The problem with it is that you have all these jazz guys trying to show off with solo's and the poor girl can hardly get a note in.

I love that Bobby M LP from '82 (I may be sketchy about her pre '79 stuff but i know the 80s stuff!  ); Jean's version of Let's Stay Together is far superior to Tina Turner's effort IMO. My favourite track was always 'How Do You Feel Tonight' featuring Keely Curtis on vocals (whatever happened to her?:???: )

Tony .... I have a feeling you have quite a collection within that filing "system". Have you saved most of your records thru the years ?
I'd be curious about where and when you DJ'd and what your "style ' was like ??

I bet my filng system :roll: could top yours .....right now its run amuck as my next step is to blend stuff thats been in boxes for twenty-five years with lots of recent acquisitions.... can't wait to one day have a beautiful library on display like Vinyllife and Mixmachine.

I just so happen to also have picked up some earlier Jean Carn (sic)... on an album called The Best Of Norman Conners And Friends : Michael Henderson - Phyllis Hyman - Jean Carn - Dee Dee Bridgewater - Phillip Mitchell and Eleanor Mills.
    .
(I think Phyllis Hyman fans will like the voice of Eleanor Mills )
I can't say I'm much of a fan of this shuffling smooth type of jazz ... just too tame for my ears .... but Jean Carn sounds good on her two cuts VALENTINE LOVE and DINDI

There is a disco tune on here called ONCE I'VE BEEN THERE featuring Phillip Mitchell... a 5:49 full-bodied number . Rather calm but not bad . Does anyone remember this one ???

"Once I've Been There" is a MASSIVE track on the Modern Soul Scene.

Exapansion Records put out a compilation album of Jean's work and guest appearences with other artists called 'Collaborations which might be of interest.
I wrote an article with a pretty comprehnsive overview of all Jeans work. I'll post it up when I find it.

I'm becoming familiar with it right now .....love that BACK IN LOVE AGAIN styled bass line at the beginning and end ... wish it'd remained thru-out .

The liner notes say its from Romantic Journey ... an album using '50 musicians' .... I believe it because I hear lots of various horns and strings... xylophone .... within ....just too bad its kind of all melted together ....if only a Gene Page type of arranger had been called in .... to make the work of all those musicians really pop !! ( Was there a 12" pressing ? )

Right now I'm itching to mix it into I LIKE WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO ME Young & Co. ...or RoyAyers RUNNING AWAY

Re: Jean Carne "Was That All It Was"

Remicks,I have a filing system of sorts if a play something regulary it's in that pile in the front, otherwise it might take me 2 or 3 hoursto find it.As for my playing style i like to play as much Disco as possible i find i can at the venues i'm playing at the moment,From 97 til 2003 i worked in the back room of one of the best house clubs in the area the i had to mix it up a bit,in themain room you had D.Js lie David Morales.Paul Oakenfold,Frankie Knuckes & Roger Sanchez. As for Norman Conners he's put some great stuff out he always has great singers on his albums,i think i've 2 on Buddah and 1 on Arista. The Phillip Mitchell track is a killer ,he's a guy who's been around i have some stuff on Spring by him and a couple L.Ps on Atlantic.
