Question Is This Disco? Herbie Hancock

    (Mixmachine-Alert: LOUD)

The Jazz Icon embraced the Disco and Funkvibes, and succeeded very well in it.

    At least IMHO!

'I Thought It Was You' was probably my 2nd favourite single of '78 after Sylvester's 'YMMFMR'.8)

'I Thought It Was You' was particularly memorable as the first UK chart hit where the lead vocal went through a vocoder. A big club track here, as was 'You Bet Your Love', both reaching the Top 20 of the pop charts.

Thanks for posting those links! 'I Thought It Was You' is an awesome disco jazz tune. i'm not too crazy about the second track, You Bet Your Love. Kind of reminds me of that Herbie Mann album from the same year - very stale and uninspiring. The video is pretty funny, but I guess Herbie had to do what he had to do to get paid. His Headhunter or Maiden Voyage era stuff wasn't going to be raking in the cash he needed.

No one's mentioned Tell Everybody from the Disco era?????? Probably the best dance record he made at that time.

I'm with you Quinny, Tell Everybody, top tune. I remember buying that as soon as it came out in the UK.

I saw him on The RockIt tour when he played at Birmingham Odeon around '83. Boy, I 'm suddenly feeling old...:-(

Even though I like some of Herbie's disco era stuff, nothing beats his early to mid 70s jazz funk period, especially his work with the Headhunters. I think he even collaborated on that infamous Sesame Street track The Pinball Song, a funky little number (pun intended) that was sung by the Pointer Sisters.

Rockit is a cool track too. The video is really great. Too bad Herbie isn't in it. Strange. Kind of like that Dan Hartman 'I Can Dream About You' video, which doesn't include him either. And 'Abracadabra' by Steve Miller, who is not in that video if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps video didn't have to kill the radio star if they didn't bother to appear in them at all! :)
