Probably I miss something... I was reading in some posts something like "Top 40's disco" chart or what.

Is there anyone could clarify what & where this chart is?

    Thanks

    Hi Masdefi,

I would guess this is referring to Disco songs that crossed over from the Disco & R&B charts to the Top 40 Pop Charts here in the U.S. Unless songs get played on the radio here, they don't make the top 40 and therefore, tend to be unknown by the masses. A lot of people got sick of the songs played on the radio like "YMCA" or "I Will Survive" or fill in the blank.

There is a tendency to categorize & differentiate Pop or Top 40 disco (Bee Gees/Village People/Donna Summer) and the more underground club records (Loleatta Holloway/Salsoul Orchestra). Remember how Classic Disco & often Fantomas rant about the Disco Top 500 featuring too many radio songs and not enough of the underground records from the early days of disco? My answer to them would be that people like what they are familiar with and many of those old songs are not available anywhere, so people can't enjoy them. I know I downloaded a bunch of those early disco songs from Napster, but try finding them on vinyl or CD. Not very easy.

So if you are lucky enough to have those early disco records in your collection, consider yourself lucky...but don't sneer at others for their more pedestrian tastes. They only know what they heard or are able to purchase.

Sometimes you just luck out and find rare treasures while looking for something else Markey. Thing is, you've gotta know that gem when do come up on it. My example is Always There. I always like it but never had the Side Effect version. By chance I came across it on the CD, Give Your Body Up To The Music. As I gleefully grabbed it and scanned the other tracks I found a song I kinda gave up finding, What Can I Do For You. Talk about a man sportin' wood. Nobody was gonna get that CD outta my hands then.

Ya see Paul, it's all relative... I bought that same CD primarily for "Always There" a track I always loved and had forgotten about until I saw the title on the back of the CD. On the other hand, I've had "What Can I Do For You" on LaBelle's "Nightbirds" LP since 1975! So one man's treasure/rarity is another man's been there /done that. (Not that I don't love the LaBelle song).

Top 40 relates to the Billboard Charts and, in general, to american charts, often made of 40 records.

Indeed, many records in the Billboard Charts are mainstream disco, but if you look well you can find real underground treasure even in these charts.

For example, a rare and sought after underground anthem like Queen Yahna's "Ain't it time" charted in Billboard Philadelphia Disco Chart for a couple of weeks in 1976

    Hi Marky,

sorry if I am sneering anyone. If I understand well, does "Sneer" means to laugh of someone's tastes? If so, stop! I have never thought to do that, believe me!

    Bye!

    Hey Paul and Mark,

You can add me to that list of people who picked up 'Give Your Body Up' for "Always There". My album is so worn the intro was just destroyed. The other CD's in this series aren't bad either. Some gems on these are: Womack & Womack - Baby I'm Scared of You; Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Running Away; Cymande - Bra; The Originals - Down to Love Town; Eddie Kendricks - Girl, You Need a Change of Mind (full length album version); Linda Clifford - Runaway Love; Chaka Khan - Clouds; Dan Hartman - Vertigo/Relight My Fire; Phreek - Weekend.

Add the fact that 98% or more of the cuts on the CD's are the 12" versions and you get some good stuff.

    Masdefi,

Please understand I was not referring to you as "sneering" at other people's taste in music. I was referring to the posts from some people who have expressed their displeasure with the type of music we discuss here. Not rare enough, not underground enough, not their taste, etc. To each his own that's my philosphy. I wish I had all those RARE 45's (but I don't).

So Nicky, Is "Give Your Body Up" a 3 cd series? I have 2 of them, the one I mentioned and the one with "Bra" on it. BTW, when you were DJing, did you spin "What Can I Do For You"?

    Hi Paul,

Yes, it is. Volume 3 is the one with Eddie Kendricks, Linda Clifford (Runaway Love), Alicia Myers (I Want To Thank You), Denroy Morgan (I'll Do Anything For You), Chaka Khan, Lenny Williams (You Got Me Running), Dan Hartman, Phreek, Visual (The Music Got Me) and Billy Nichols (Give Your Body Up To The Music).

As for LaBelle, I played it every chance I could. Like Nicky Siano, I would mix from the album into the 45 version because of the better vocal ending. (I mentioned this once before, it's not extended but has an additional track.) It was a bitch to work but worth it.

Thanks for sharing that Nicky. I only wished I could have been there when you were spinning "What Can I Do For You." I would have love to hear your mix.
