    PARADISE EXPRESS

    Who are these people?

I have 2 of their singles that I found in a thrift shop years ago.
One is called "Dance / Poincianna" and the other is "Reverend Lee / Star in my life". What other songs did they make? What albums? Why are they so obscure? Who is this black lady singing? Shes real good! Any information would be good, because Ive always been curious.

I did buy "Dance/Poincianna" but i never found any thing else by them.Labels like Fantasy put a hell of a lot ofone off tracks out. An album on Fantasy i've always liked by Fever has Clydene Jackson on vocals, Patrick Cowley on synths.it has that Sylvester feel ,but i could never find anything else by them.

As usual, the answers to your questions are to be found in the "Disco Records A-Z" section of this very site!

    Here are their two LPs:

    http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/2469_0_2_0_C/

The first is very much symphonic disco, the second is much more electronic sounding. The cover of the second LP can be seen below:
I'm not sure whether she is the singer or not?

Herb Jimmerson and "ViAnn" were a husband and wife team. Her vocals are not as strong as might seem-- what comes across so powerfully on a track like "Dance" is the backing vocalists, Two Tons of Fun. The acts were label-mates on Fantasy Records.

this is interesting to find out. (the two tons involvement) So this is not a big discovery after all, (except for me)

Im going to have to find that second album for sure!

Its a shame that more albums werent made. I think it is so weird that such totally awesome music such as this is so completely obscure that a fan like me barely knows anything about it, yet crappy rock groups are known by millions.....

    I didn't know this either ....

1978's "Paradise Express" was strictly disco and superbly crafted. The sales were probably hindered by the fact that 2-12" singles were released from the album and contained four of the five songs on it. The first 12" single, Paul Jabara's "Dance" put them firmly on the charts and even the b-side "Poinciana" enjoyed limited play. The second 12" single enjoyed less commercial success, but is my personal favorite. "Star In My Life" was destined to become a classic, largely due to the wonderful backgrounds by Izora Rhodes, Martha Wash (Two Tons O' Fun-Weathergirls) and Sharon Hymes. ***********.com
Looking forward to giving it a new listen .......:icon_cool:

How true; I've wondered that for most of my life. File under 'one of life's mysteries'!

I'm a bit confused here. I remember the 12" of Dance/Ponciana coming out over here (still have it) and clearly remember the publicity of the time saying it was basically the Two Tons. The connections are there.. Fantasy Records, produced by Henry Cosby, so a Motown connection with Harvey Fuqua...and therefore the Two Tons and Sylvester..but why do I think Jeanne Tracey was involved too?

There's no question that it's the 2 Tons. I can't hear Jeannie Tracy at all.

You're right Sandra, there's no question its the Two Tons.

I can't hear Jeanne Tracey either.

But something at the back of my mind connects Paradise Express with Jeanne Tracey. It could just be the Two Tons/Sylvester connection

Although the 12" of "Dance" was the bigger cut out here in Los Angeles, the
one I remember more is "Let's Fly"(also a 12" released at the same time of the LP)This is one I used to hear at Studio One or the Probe that had a
dark, moodiness. It mixed great with things like "Over and Over"/Disco Circus,
    Tantra,Vivian Vee"Remember"....
