    Exclamation The SyLvEsTeR DISCO HEAT!

    I agree with you !!

Dance (disco heat) was my first record , I was 8 years old , I played that 7'' ten or twenty times for day , later, I discovered "You make me feel ...", to my surprise was even better than my former record, since then I only have respectful words for Sylvester, and his warm disco tracks, they transpire , all the glamour and euphoria of the era.

Artist from a big letter and Great name! What a good song “One Night Only”!!! The song from bleeding heart! He sang with opened soul every time – very rare thing!

The fantastic thing about Sylvester is that he was a SOUL singer - or maybe a better description woul be 'a singer with Soul'.

Sylvester's Disco is infused with Soul, Gospel, R &B, Jazz and Cabaret...which are the true roots of all real Disco music.
I saw one of his live shows in London (I still have my fan club literature) and was blown away totally by the whole thing, not least of which by the interplay between him and amazing Two Tons Of Fun.

To me, Sylvester James was the very peak of Disco music but his non Disco sides were fantastic too....'Was It Something That I Said', 'Love Has Come Around' (With Donald Byrd) and especially 'Here Is My Love' are all great without being frantic uptempo numbers.

It's so sad that he passed away before he was able to make his true mark beyond the stigma that Disco carried.

That Disco heat video is great!! :p

Those dancers doing the "hustle' steps.. That the way it really was when this song came out!!! :p only a dance floor full of them crashing into each others 8-). This clip also reminded me of how much I loved the very end of the record (synth solo part) and always wondered why they cut it off so soon :-?

I just LOVE "Dance (Disco Heat)", especially the breaks with the female chorus going: "dance with me in the disco heat" -that acts like voodoo on me. I remember the 12" single and the Lp version being quite different. I think the breaks were longer and better on the LP version, so I was disappointed with the single...
... or vice versa. I'll have to check, if I can trace where I put them.

P.S. The woman with the dark green outfit in the clip is HOOOOT!

here we go again !!! .... all "real" disco music :razz::razz:
Indeed , those important ingredients are some of the "true roots" of much (but not "all" ) of "real" disco music ..... there's "real" disco that has other "true" roots as well ....

    :-o

Don't feel too bad for him. :p
Sylvester CHOSE to do disco way on into the mid- 80's , apparently not too concerned about any dreaded "disco stigma" :p that outsiders might attach to it. And his true fans feel he accomplished his "true mark" just fine ... especially thru his wonderful disco music... .....

Was the 8:31 version of Dance (Disco Heat) ever released commercially, where Sylvester sings, "What......you wanna do WHAT? Not right here...." I love that 8-minute plus version, with Martha and Izora doing various vocal workouts after the beat stops from time to time, sort of like playing musical chairs.

    Wow!!!

Thank you for the links on Youtube. Brought back a flood of memories as I sit here on the laptop watching the Disney channel with my 2 1/2 year old.

    My, how things change.
I used to frequent the LA disco scene in the late 70\'s. My favorite discos were \" My uncles, Dillons, the Tiki\'s, Odyssey 2000.

Sylvester didn't sing on Love Has Come Around. I've got the Donald Byrd LP & Sylvester isn't mentioned anywhere in the credits.:???:

OK Sandra, you got me worried now!

I honestly have no idea where that info came from. I asked a few likely people who I thought would know and they don't remember at all....which is a bit strange because someone must have told me ! And I thought it was a pretty well known thing ! The internet brings up no info either.

Have a listen to the track...it sounds like him in there and as he would have been contracted to Honey Productions at the time I can see why he wouldn't have been credited on Donald Byrd's album.

The album credits don't include any male names..it credits Hot Buttered Soul I think (I don't have the album, just the 12") and that was Pat Lewis's girls but there's definately a male voice on 'Love Has Come Around' .

My memory is that it's Jeanni Tracey too although I'm not so sure about that.

Further investigation on this one methinks!

    Re: The SyLvEsTeR DISCO HEAT!

That Donald Byrd LP was totally produced by Isaac Hayes & he worked in NYC with a specific gang of musicians, whereas Jeannie Tracy & Sylvester tended to work on the west coast. Maybe you're confusing it with the Freddie Hubbard LP from '81 which featured Jeannie & I think Sylvester too.

    Hi Sandra,
Maybe thats who I'm confusing it with..Freddie Hubbard! But I'm sure someone told me it was Sylvester uncredited on the Donald Byrd track..it wasn't who I thought it was though, which either means my head was in the stars at the time or my mind is playing tricks on me...which means my past is beginning to catch up !

If only I could remember who told me because I can't find anything anywhere to back up what I've said now, which is embarrassing.
