Mai Tai may have been the only 'true' disco artists hitting it big time with 'History' but to classify girlgroups like LUV, Doris D. & The Pins as DISCO ??? Johan, you must be joking!!! Even my pink poodle starts throwing up at the idea...

Luv & Doris D & The Pins were (and still are) considered as POP or EUROTRASH, depending on which side of the ocean you are.

Over here in Holland these groups were fun at the local pub or schoolparty but were never considered DISCO...more Camp with a capital C!

Mai Tai was REAL DISCO... and another Dutch boy who made it big on Prelude; Theo Vaness...He cut two albums for that label that are being considered as cult maybe but are definetely REAL DISCO. Vaness had a French producer and also recorded in Munich. Ask Francois Kevorkian who mixed the 'Bad Bad Boy' album that came out in 1979.

I believe Theo Vaness had a gay image, but I am not sure if he really was. Remicks??:roll:

Although Doris D is classified as Disco (maybe campy) and was included in the Disco Radio Action compilations from Rick Delisle. It's a thin line.......

Theo is straight, the "gay image" was part of the promoting campaign.

BTW, the Dutch never were big in Disco, weren't they???? They made many attempts but..... Admit that the Belgians were much more succesful ;) And they continue to hit hard on the dancefloors. Maybe it's the water we drink and the food we eat :-)

Disco wise; THINK AGAIN: besides Two Man Sound which other REAL Belgian Disco act can you name?? Plastic Bertrand or Telex are of a later period, as is New Beat as is Vive la fete...
And WHICH Belgian DJ can claim he opened the Olympic Games in Greece a while back?? Of which nationality is world's best DJ for years?? Tiesto is Dutch isn't he?? Can you name any Belgian DJ in the DJ's Top 50?? Fat Ronny?? Sven van Hees?? The Dutch have produced a far more succesfull range of contemporary DJ's and worldwide operating clubs than the Belgians these days....IMO

Theo Vaness had a quick stab at disco prior to his triplet of bona fide dance albums that began with Back to Music, the record being a 7" called "I Got You, You Got Me". He was a fairly well known mor singer before that wasn't he?

As for your knowledge of Belgian Disco, mmmh, you've forgotton a lot of producers. For example, Jean Klüger, Jean Vanloo.

Belgian/French productions like Patrick Hernandez, Chocolat's, Gibson Brothers. Dance acts like 2 Unlimited (Dutch singers but written and arranged by Belgians, something that is often forgotten

Top 50 of DJ's? Who cares? What do you have? Timo Maas? DJ Jean??? IMHO, a lot of overhyped Technopluggers. Ever heard of Jan Van Biesen? That guys mixes vintage Disco. DJ Smos and Baby B? Charles Shillings? Yves Deruyter? Olivier Gosseries? King Kitsch (pure 70's Disco)? Dr. Disco? Dr. Lectroluv? Benoelie (works for Blue Note)? Tomaz? Too Many DJ's AKA Soulwax AKA The F*cking Dewaele Brothers (booked by Hugh Hefner, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Prince and many celebrities)? Zolex? Marco Bailey? The Glimmer Twins? Fly (Bonzaï)? Discobar Galaxie? Junior Jack (living in Brussels=Belgian)? He had much more success in the US than your guys. BTW Sven Van Hees SUCKS!

I refer to Tiesto and the contemporay dance scene and not to Disco of earlier years since I do not agree with your previous quote

although the scene is changing fast nowadays, as far as music goes
I always have regarded the Belgians far more creative and original than the Dutch who have proven their own value to the dance scene

Many dutch knwo "Red & Blue", "Café D'Anvers", "La Rocca", "Illusion", "Versus", "Boccaccio", the former "Zillion". I honestly don't know a famous and trendsetting club in Holland. The last 1 I remember was the "IT".

Club RoXY , gone now, was the prime and trendsetting club since 1986. It was here that the Dutch House/Acid House movement was born. IT followed years later but was very succesfull and trendsetting for the gay scene. These days Now & Wow in Rotterdam and Club 11 are quite famous and trendsetting examples
and there is a healthy underground scene that keeps growing and kicking ass... Besides, the Dutch dance scene thrives on parties like 'sensation', 'white', 'black'... and festivals like 'dance valley' . I am sure that Belgians know these very well... as 'sensation' is organised in Antwerp...

yes, culturally the Dutch and the Belgians, especially the Flemish, share far more than you and I know (or will admit) in music, fashion, theatre... For the readers who find this discussion a little bizarre: Flemish and Dutch are having this teasing discussions for ages :p There's no harm in it and it's a folcloristic thing.
