    Dear Sammy,

I'm really glad to see another one of your pleasant track lists.
I wished to see Larry Holmes dancing "Movin" by Brass Construction, heh heh heh!! Who would win this battle???

Well, let's at once to the sequence of our Alphabet Battle started on your #10 happy our list.

    Your 'T's :
Andrea True Connection is cool!! I think it is a nice track.

Gary Toms Empire - Great group, you did "blow my mind" with that!!

Temptations - I knew it!!! My Temptations is gone!!! Great move!!

Now I'm in a vindictive mode!!!

    My 'T-Rex' list:

Tavares - Loveline (my early 80's fave of them)
T-Connection - Take It To The Limit (Sorry Jazz, I did steal you)
The Trammps - Up On The Hill (rare early 80's groove not that Trammps cliché)
The Time - The Walk (another early 80's funk track with some P-Funk ingredients)

    And the killer T-Rex:

Bobby Thurston - Main Attraction (F-U-N-K-Y  )

Well, my sliced friends, that's it!!!!

    See ya'

Blax, first of all, thanks for your comments on my happy hour list. However, your list of 'T's, SENSATIONAL! Great call on Tavares, T-Connection, The Trammps, your entire list for that matter. I forgot to list that I played Tavares's 'Check it out' as one of my slow jams this past Friday during happy hour. Your KO punch with Bobby Thurston was a nice hook from out of left field. Great list my man, unless Jazz does something stunning, I think you'll win the round of 'T's.

Thanks for reminding me Blax of the wonderful groovemaster, Bobby Thurston, his two-sided, "You Got What It Takes/Check Out The Groove," is on my Top 50 of all time....I even came in 2nd in a dance contest to the former cut....always the bridesmaid.....

Thanx for the kind words Sammy and Danceman!!

I love Bobby Thurston's tunes, oh yeah!! I use to say that Bobby's records are my "lifeguard" on a party, if the people are not dancing....put some Bobby Thurston's track!!! His tracks can be funky, disco, slow jams, etc.... It always work!! At least in my parties.

Sammy, where is Jazz? Any trouble with his 'T's, who knows??

    Peace

    Sammy--

What a great list!! I like Donna Summer's "Try Me". That "trilogy" had the makings of a classic novel: the beginning, the build-up, the "denounement", and the finale!! Inner Life's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" I have on my Salsoul Classics CD (the 10:27 version). What a great Levan mix!! "Dreaming A Dream" by the Crown Heights Affair was on the charts when I was born (1975). First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder" has that unmistakable part of the song when the music almost ends except for the voices. Very similar to Loleatta Holloway's "Catch Me On The Rebound". The Intruder's "I'll Always Love My Mama" is a 1973 disco classic. I like Evelyn "Champagne" King's "I Don't Know If It's Right" although I feel it's been overshadowed by "Shame" (with regards to appearing on compilation CD's). Very good selection of tunes!!

A great list as always Sammy!

Brass C! Such an important record that was! A timeless classic!! How many nmany times have Idanced to that one??

Intruders! Hope you played the FULL nine minutes of that!! None of this mixing stuff!!

First Choice! Brilliant track!! That is the nearest Salsoul got to doing the Philly sound IMHO!! Especially with the instrumental sections towards the end. great stuff!

Slave! Top quality! I always love those crisp arrangements on the Slave records from this era. Very classy!

Gwen Guthrie! Haven't heard that for ages!

Strikers! That was a big club record when I was studying in Germany!

Don't know that Donna Summer track though. When was that from?

Deniece Williams! What a great slow jam that was! From 1977 too! Hmmm it begins with 'W'!!

Very intrigued by the Pockets song. I only have Come Go With Me on a compilation ...

FANSTASTIC!! YOU'RE THE MAIN MAN!!  Great memories as always..

    Now onto the Challenge!!

First of all, let me comment on your ‘S’s and ‘T’s – and see if you have kindly let any ‘T’s for me

Sammy – S : Came out tops!!! “The Bottle” is IMHO a timeless classic, and Mr Scott-Heron is an undoubted genius. Had the privilege of seeing this performed live. I will IGNORE Blax’s comments about me and bottles!!

Blax - S: Liked your ‘S’s as well….Salsoul Orch – I left that group for somebody else – I used to go mad about that track when I first heard it…I agree with U about that Starpoint track -FUNKY!! I know the SOS Band and Sho’Nuff but other tracks of theirs than these were known to us in England …Dare I answer?? – Maybe!!!

Sammy’s ‘T’s – Gary Toms Empire – oooh, yes, Sammy I like that one….brings back a few nice memories, I can tell you!! Andrea True Connection – one of those commercial crossovers that I love…it has very poignant memories for me of a very different kind (I was in hospital at the time….and yes, they DID find the BRAIN CELL!!! ) .. Temptations – Treat Her Like A Lady – a great record of course, but remember, guys, it is I (JP) who is the LADIES’ MAN!!! The other two are unknown to me ….

Blax’s mega ‘T’s. What can I say, my friend – you took 5 excellent ‘T’s and gave me trax I don’t know or recall directly…. I like your choice of The Trammps, and yes, I would have gone with T-Connection. Your choices, Blax?? KREEM OF THE KROP!!!

Thought you would have chosen Rufus Thomas, Blax, for your FUNKY dog!!

Well, I know you’ve been waiting for this!! My ‘T’s… Can we go straight onto the ‘U’s ??

TYZIK – Sweet Nothings (That’s what you left me for the ‘T’s )
TOWER OF POWER – We Came To Play (can’t believe you left me that one!! You’re so kind, guys!!)
TOMORROW’S EDITION – U Turn Me One (good funky dancer – nice crisp beat!!)
TIMMY THOMAS – Stone To The Bone (absolutely glorious soulful number - love those vocals! I think the lady singer is in heaven – like me!!!)

And my killer track – you’re gonna regret it!!!!! FUNK ATTACK!!!!

TROUBLE FUNK – Drop The Bomb (on Blax and Sammy, who else?? )

    Now I feel better!!!

If it moves - funk it!!

    Hi Danceman,

I have it on a Dutch Phillips 12" pressing.
I don't know if it ever came out on CD.

Unfortunately I haven't got a CD burner so I am unable to copy it for you.

You should be able to get hold of the 12-inch off the web, though...

    Good luck!

The other tracks I dont know yet, but I will for sure!!

Who is the next? Anyway, I will suggest to pick just one song for the 'U' round, OK?

    Peace

BTW, Rufus Thomas or Funky Dog? What name did you suggest to Mr. Groove?

Sorry I did not respond yesterday as I was out sick. However, back in full effect today and ready to go. Many responses to get to. Robbie, thanks for the comments on the list my man, now I know I've made some wise choices on my top 25 list. Jazz, love the 'T's my man. Once again you were last, but definitely not least. How did I let 'We came to play' slip by me.

My 'U' is especially for U, Blaxman ...

    Ultrafunk - Gotham City Boogie

    To the Blaxcave!!

BTW I reckon we should just list one 'V' as well, as they are few and far between

Okay fellas, nice calls on The Undisputed Truth and Ultrafunk. I figured Blaxman would list 'Gotham City Boogie'. As for my 'U'plifting, 'U'ndisputed and 'U'ltrafunky entry, it is from:

Ubiquity Starbooty - Midnight after Dark

Jazz, you must love this record as the band was produced by Roy Ayers and if I'm correct it is from your year 1977. I am in agreement with one entry for our 'V' round. Jazz your first, followed by me then Blax. Let the battle continue!

Like it, Sammy, like it!! I loved that track Starbooty - and it was late '77 I recall....Yeah, I had Ubiquity on my list, you can bet - but I couldn't resist Gotham City Boogie!!

On to the V's. V for Victory, which is mine with a nice jazzy tune ...

    Dave Valentin - Pied Piper

That's right, children, all follow JP!!!

I ain't called JAZZ Pilgrim for nothing, you know!!!

Nice one Jazz; My fellow countryman from Puerto Rico the great flutist Dave Valentin, cool. As for myself, I am going with the 'V'ivacious one:

    Vanity 6 - Nasty girl

I don't know if you or Blax can top that.
One thing is for sure, they'll look better than anything Blax will come up with.
I'll let you and Blax decide how many entries will go with for the 'W's of which I'll go first and Jazz goes last.

For once, I'll keep quiet on your track, Sammy!

For once, that should keep the man from the Blaxcave QUIET!! That's what I call PEACE!!

As for the 'W's - I reckon we should be able to manage three each, don't you? I've only got 17 'W's in my list!

So, I suggest 18 entries to our 'W' lists!!!
But, to help Sammy I agree with just three!!
But first I have to do my comments and post my 'V' song.

Sammy's and Jazz's 'U's: I dont know that tracks!! Sadly!!

    Jazz's 'V': I dont know too!!

Sammy's 'V': Finally!!! That track I know quite well!! Nice girls, nice track Sammy!!

Now my 'Valuable" track, certainly much more popular than yours:

Luther 'V'andross - Never Too Much

It's never too much remember this: I'm Blaxman!! (TA-DA!!!!!!)

    Peace

    Blaxman:

'Never too much', awesome! I guess you can tell I like that song just a little, huh.   Great pick, however, you are the enemy, thus the battle continues. Okay three 'W's is the consensus, so here is the 'W'inning list of entries:

Vesta Williams - Don't you blow a good thing (Love this record)
Johnny 'Guitar' Watson - A real mother for ya (Funky blues from '77 if I'm correct Jazz)

and to 'W'ind up this 'W'inning list off right,

Lenny Williams - 'Cause I love you (Classic slow jam that sends chills through the ladies spines)

Oh man, can you guys deal with it? Not sure you can. Remember the 'X's are next so maybe we will want to go back to one entry; You decide.

    Hey, Blax,

I am sitting here at work listening to this Dexter Wansell track you picked ..."You Can Be What You Wanna Be". My verdict? - EXCELLENT!! One of those funky jazzy tunes that Dexter did best!!

BTW One of his trax became an "anthem" in the clubs I used to go to, and with the JP's. Which track was it? - it was "Life On Mars"!!

Isn't it strange how we all possess these LPs, we have owned them for quite a time and yet they have some real gems on that we have yet to discover!!

I've owned the "Life On Mars" LP on vinyl since the late Seventies! And I have never played that track, Blax!!

But I guess that's what this Board is for - helping you to unlock those hidden gems!

    Cheers Blax!!
