It did come out in the U.K i did buy it and i expected it to do well what happened to it? zilch. I think it was a change in style that put people off it. His Philly stuff went back to his Gamble & Huff style and did well ,as in "Cooling out".

THE DEVIL IN MRS. JONES 1976 Motown
by ....of all people ...the typically smoothly suave & soulful: Jerry Butler
But not this time out ....
This is saucy raw funk ....with a loud & gravelly vocal of the Peoples Choice style
bass ….guitar ….. horns and drums ….
Wasn’t there a porn movie out at the time by this title ????
... You know they called the priest to pray for me
They say my woman is satan in disguise.... ya they do
but an exorcist can't resist her kiss deep down
The devil in Mrs. Jones makes me wanna raise a little hell of my own
The devil in Mrs. Jones makes me want to get up and get down !!!
And if this love jones is a curse --- then I’m READY FOR THE WORST !
If I’m possessed I must confess that I would trade a lifetime for an hour ….. yes I would
Wrapped in her arms her earthly charms you know the gal has got me in her power …..and it feels so good
Nicely conceived lyrics !!
(And ya Diana ....if there’s a cure for this ... he don’t want it :p !!!!)
Shoulda made the disco charts ! Bad Motown promoting (yet again)
*****
Baby, take me
high upon a hillside
high up where the stallion
meets the sun

Just thinking what Remicks said about bad Motown promotion, two other great singers signed for Motown and got neglected - Stephanie Mills & Chuck Jackson.
I like the mid 70s motown era, so the Jerry Butler albums from that period are really great. This album and Suite For A Single Girl, which is the album that features the awesome cut Chalk It Up, are worth collecting. Not every track is uptempo funk, but there's enough to keep one interested.

This is interesting....I always thought that the Iceman was still on Philadelphia International Records around 76'. I have never heard this album but it sounds like it could be worth a listen.
**Funk Is It's Own Reward**
Yes Jerry Butlers "The Devil in Mrs Jones" did come out in 76. Iv'e found one of my Jerry singles on Philly - "Lets make love "it did'nt come till 78'.It has that late 60's Gamble & huff "Iceman" feel.
Jerry Butler's records on Motown should be relatively easy to find. I paid quite a bit for Suite for the Single Girl, Love's on the Menu, and his duet album Thelma and Jerry on CD. The It all comes out Lp is the only vinyl only release. It's too bad Universal doesn't put a compilation together of his Motown stuff.
Maybe if we're lucky, which I doubt, Universal will put out the albums combined as part of their Hip-O Select series?
I forgot to mention that these Motown albums are especially great because they feature the cream of the LA session musicians, including James Gadson on drums and Melvin 'Wah Wah Watson' Ragin on guitar. Those guys were daaaay-mn funkay!

Yes, if you like that rhythm section, try Spirit Traveler's Lp Playing the hits from the motorcity on jvc from 1994. It's mostly an instrumental cover album but does feature the vocals of Ollie Woodson on a few tracks. "I love you" is a new song and the Lps standout. Check this one out!
The possibility of Mr. Butler's Motown work may actually be quite high. He has name recognition from the stuff he did on V-Jay and Mercury. Hey, Universal could do a Millenium collection Volume 2. They have the rights but would probably boil and butcher it like they did 95% of the titles in that series. (The exception being Barrett Strong.) Most of his earlier stuff and even a lot of his later stuff has been reissued. Around 1993, Valley vue reissued some sessions he did for Fountain records in the early 80's and his PIR stuff has been reissued oversees which also is simply amazing. His really a showman and from every era his recordings have integrity.
