Disco performed live / THE ALBUMS :

    *****

--- Which disco acts have had their music captured live ?? ... :-?

("disco acts" means everyone from the most obvious (Donna Summer) ... to those that perform at least one disco charting song (of their own) within the live album )

Seems like a comprehensive list of the artists that recorded live disco performances would be worthwhile ....:)

    As starters : :

Donna Summer --- LIVE AND MORE
Village People --- LIVE AND SLEAZY
Marvin Gaye --- LIVE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM

    and Needlefingers has added :
Chic --- LIVE AT THE BUDOKON
    The Jacksons --- JACKSONS LIVE
    Sylvester --- LIVING PROOF
Donna Summer - LIVE AND MORE ENCORE

Needlefingers : Didn't Cerrone have a live album? And surely the Bee Gee's.
KC has a live album coming out.
    Sister Sledge has a few.
Lets see the list of artists/albums of live performances that results ! 8)

Re: Disco performed live / THE ALBUMS :

I remember a Cerrone album with a cheap montage of an audience pic and another pic of C playing drums, but I think it contained studio material.

If you count that one by Marvin Gaye then I could mention Gratitude (1975), Earth, Wind & Fire double live LP (there's a live version of "Shining star").
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

Rose Royce had a decent live album that's been reissued to death since the early 1990's when it was recorded.

Re: Disco performed live / THE ALBUMS :

I'm not too crazy about live disco albums, because I find that the drums and bass don't come out sounding as crisp and hard like on the studio versions. They tend to be more for listening than actual club play.

Off the top of my head, outside of the ones mentioned already, there's the Blue Magic Live album from 1975, which featured Major Harris and Margie Joseph, which has recently been released on CD.

One live recording I wish was on vinyl or CD is the KC & The Sunshine Band movie that Rhino had put out on VHS a number of years ago (I don't think they've put it out on DVD yet). It was filmed in '75, I believe. Man the group was TIGHT in that concert. And the drum and percussion breakdown on Sound Your Funky Horn was off the hook.

True DF ..... I doubt many (any ? ) live versions got club play ....as you say .... the proper sound isn't there. The success of disco productions was greatly determined by the quality of the mixing ......

    On with the list!!!

Remicks , I know you were trying to de-throne James Brown as the "Original Disco man" but come on :-P, how could you forget his Live "Sex Machine " LP :icon_neutral:, Any early self respecting underground DJ never left home without this one, “Give it up or turnit a loose “ was a Dance floor magnet in the first half of the 70’s. A true Discotheque classic.
:razz::razz: I need to get this on CD, but have been postponing it forever since I've got like three vinyl copies of the LP

Sex Machine, Recorded Live, Bell Auditorium, Augusta Georgia , 1970

Bootsy Collins is playing the Bass in this LP, a fact I only discovered only recently on this board, even though James chants his name during the performance

    Watcha mean "trying" ...?......:p

OK ..... ya'll just love makin' this stuff HARD dont cha !!!:icon_twisted::roll::razz:

But ..... NO ! A LIVE JAMES BROWN LP from 1970 :o is not a live disco album .... it doesn't meet the stated criteria to qualify for this list , specifically :
" the artist performs at least one disco charting song of their own "

... I'll agree that no self respecting DJ was without this classic LP at the time and if someone wants to start a list of live "funk " LPs or live "pre-disco dance " LPs .... I'll be the first to suggest this one .8-)

--- AND --- if the self proclaimed original disco man actually released a LIVE album from within the disco era containing his disco music ( how cool would that be ) ... absolutely it gets added here !!!.... 8)

    Now come on Mixmachine .....
you have to know of some truly live disco LPs to add to this !!!!:icon_surprised::roll:

Unfortunately, this album isn't fully live. I think the whole thing was recorded in an auditorium or two (he liked to record songs in auditoriums - The Popcorn is one example). But part of it was in front of an audience and part of it was in an empty auditorium, and the audience cheering was added in after. Give It Up Or Turnit Loose falls under the latter category.

    Ok, Discosavvy, :icon_mrgreen::-P:-P:-P

"Basically a jam session, the track's influence can be heard on numerous recordings including Evelyn Champagne King's million-selling "Shame" (listen to Instant Funk's Kim Miller's telegraph-like guitar lines). One of the singer's distinctive screams was edited onto the beginning of the track for an exciting hook. Written by Brown's manager Charles Bobbitt, "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" held the R&B top spot for two weeks and hit number 15 pop in spring 1969. An alternative version of the tune can be found on his Sex Machine LP" From AMG

    http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p...3:8n7tk6axykb3

they had no "Disco" charts back then yet :icon_mrgreen: I was dancing to this cut in Discotheques as late as 74/75.8)

This is probably true since Bootsy is playing the bass, I also read some other comments on this respect, funny how the original liner notes and cover does say prominently and clearly "recorded live at Home in Augusta , Georgia with his bad self" (removed from the CD edition )

I did have Free & Bad Company with me .The singer who is now with Queen is a guy called Paul Rodgers, was in both bands .He was brought up about a couple of miles from me ,so he's a local hero. The club i worked in? it was called Kirklevington Country Club. It's a local legend people still talk about it. I left in the late 70's. A typical play list from me in those days would include E.W.&F-Candi Staton - lots of Philly - B.T.Express - Chic -Bionic Boogie - Voyage -lots of T.K.including a club favourite Paullette Reeves "Jazz Freak".

Brass Construction and BT Express have live albums issued on Collectables. The are pretty tight sounding and some of it may have been done in the studio with crowd effects. But they are both solid as was the previously mentioned Rose Royce concert from the early 1990's.

--- Which disco acts have had their music captured live ?? ... :-?

why is it that I don't like live-albums by any Disco artist??

Mmmh...lemme think...maybe it is because I prefer the actual LIVE PERFORMANCE better than the disc!! Especially if I happened to be there at the moment of performing...
That's why...and you would agree as well after witnessing CHIC (with a 4 piece string outfit) and SYLVESTER with the Two Tons of Fun live at De Koepelkerk in Amsterdam around 1979... yes AMSTERDAM!! of all places. Or Gwen Guthrie or Grace Jones on her knees at The Paradise Garage in NYC...who needs albums with a LIVE performance like that???

    but remicks...you asked for it...here we go;

The Pointer Sisters -live at the Opera House
that is at The San Fransisco Opera House on the evening of April 21 1974
not too early or charty farty for your stats I hope???

my favourites on this album are

    WANG DANG DOODLE
    YES WE CAN CAN

the live-version of 'Mc Arthur's Park' by Donna Summer is amongst and beyond Disco's Golden Years... still ruling after all those years
