I just came across another tape I made a few years ago for the girls in the office. Now the good thing here is that these girls were 20-somethings and they kept taking this tape to their parties and people kept stealing it!!! A GOOD THING that the kid's were liking the old stuff--a BAD THING that I had to keep dubbing new copies (at least 5--until I told them I was all-dubbed out).

Well, IF they asked nicely, I'd probably make another copy.

Marky: great choices - ida pilfered too ya betcha!

Earlier tonite I was listening to WCBS-FM Top 20 from this week in 1971....they played Hot Pants, Stick-Up and Mr. Big Stuff....they said that it had been over 5 years where there had been no Top 20 songs with the title "Mr." in it....the last one being Mr. Tambourine Man in 1966....what about "Mr. Dieingly Sad" in 1966....I remember that being a big hit here in the East...does anyone care to remember? I was always surprised that that song never turned up on the dance floor by someone.....I think it was by The Critters.

I remember "Mr. Dieingly Sad" by The Critters...Big one in the summer of '66 in St. Olaf;(#17 on the national chart)...BUT it was a ballad. Are you saying, why didn't someone cover it sped up to a dance tempo?

It seems that the followup to that song was a big fave of mine, BUT I can't remember what it was. Or maybe it was by another group. Their only other Top 40 chart hit came in the summer of 1967: "Don't Let The Rain Fall Down On Me". Can't say I recall that one.

They also had another hit "Younger Girl"....also a hit by The Lovin' Spoonful..and yes, I meant that Mr. Dieingly Sad shoulda been covered by another group and disco-fied.

    "Younger Girl"!!!
Yep, that's what I was thinking of. That was played a lot on WLS out of Chicago and WDGY in Minneapolis--MY STATIONS.

Gosh, I haven't heard either of those songs in years. I have to see if they are on any compilations.

    Thanks for the reminder.

    Hi Discodisk,

Hey thanks for the compliment. Coming from you that means a lot. YOU sure know your soul music.

Now, strangely enough, I did hear most of that music back in the St. Olaf days--BUT we did get Chicago radio. The oddest one is "Jungle Fever". They did play that in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where I went to school. Pretty shocking cause it is very sexually suggestive with all that moaning--almost a precursor to "French Kiss" by Lil Louis. I finally got my hands on "Jungle Fever" on a Rhino "Didn't It Blow Your Mind" compilation and later it appeared on the "Boogie Nights" soundtrack.

Today, I was listening to something you probably know. It's a British compilation called "Invictus Club Classics" (1999/Sequel Records). Besides a few obvious cuts by Freda Payne & Honey Cone--everything else is new to me and what great records they are!!! 23 tracks, in all... I'll post if anyone wants the track listing. Even an early cut by The Jones Girls.."Taster of The Honey (Not the Keeper Of The Bee").

    Anyone heard this one?????

My verdict on your list - ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT !!

I substituted "Absolutely" for "F******" at the last minute! Gotta be polite!!

Nice to see some Staples Singers in there!! Betty Wright and Jean Knight ... two classic standards IMHO... "Band Of Gold" - glorious record!!

But, my pick of the bunch?? - a track which I discovered in the mid-80's when it got a welcome re-issue as part of a UK compilation - "Express Yourself". Pure funk !! DROP DA BOMB!!!

If it moves - funk it!!

    Hey Marky,

yes, I heard it and it's great!!! I have this comp and it's fantastic. I'm a big fan of HOT WAX/INVICTUS stuff. There's another great collection released in England called MOLTEN GOLD - THE BEST OF HOT WAX RECORDS. One of my favorite tracks on INVICTUS CLUB CLASSICS is the one by SILENT MAJORITY (can't remember the name of the track right now).

About your funky list: simply great! You go, Marky!

Peace and funk to us all,

    Oh, Blax...

    I don't know. I guess it just seemed like obvious--(although great)--stuff.

    Glad everyone approved.
