    1979 remix of THE HUSTLE

    *****

Just picked up a surprise piece .....a 1979 remix of Van McCoy's The Hustle (remix by "The Mix Masters " ) b/w LOVE IS THE ANSWER

not a remix by today's terms .... when records get slaughtered beyond recognitoin .....
this 3:27 mix just ups the thump , increases the bongoing ... some heightened castanets ....and some RING MY BELL type pings ( well it was 1979 after all ). Otherwise true to the original.

Released in England on H&L as a 45 ......was there a longer 12 " version as well ??

What a calm piece of disco ..... full of soft vocal " coo"s and gentle flutes and chimes ...( never realized before what a strong influence this had to have had on Herb Alpert's RISE )

This 45 release came in a picture sleeve featuring Van McCoy's face and on the reverse side Hugo and Luigi write :

    HE WAS A TALENT
    HE WAS A FRIEND
    THE TALENT IS STILLED
    THE MUSIC GOES ON
    SO DOES THE FRIENDSHIP

This record is lovingly dedicated to Van McCoy

The death of Van McCoy in 1979 was one more dynamic leading to the demise of disco . He was 39 .

Yes a H&L UK remix 12" was released and from memory it’s got a longer mix on it, I can’t give you precise details about it because I’ve never bothered to buy a copy of it.

For me the remix adds little to the original version, but it sounds like you’ll like the extended 12" if you are enjoying the 45 mix of it.

The 12" remix was included on the Unidisc Best of Van McCoy CD. I heard it for the first time back in the early 90s and I still find it weak compared to the original. They essentially got rid of the funky drum beat (Rick Marotta or Steve Gadd?) and put a boring, plain and repetitive beat. Then they added those cheesy electric drums. I would have preferred a remix similar to that of Love Is The Answer, with complete breakdowns featuring the rhythm section only. Love Is The Answer was remixed in '76 for 12" release, by the way - the flip to 'That Old Black Magic' by The Softones.

Another UK H&L 12" that’s worth looking out for

Another UK H&L 12" that’s worth looking out for is:

Sandy Mercer “Now That You’re In (What Cha Gonna Do About It)” on the UK H&L/Phonogram JUMBO 011 Promo 12"

This features a different (much better mix in my opinion) to the one that’s on the US RCA PD-11561 12".

The mix of “The Work Your Body (Work That Body)” is I think the same on both the UK and US 12’s.
