The use of an upright or grand piano?
Disco Funk
*****
When listening to WE ARE FAMILY by Sister Sledge
I realized something particular about this song (If I'm hearing it correctly) that is most uncommon in the production of disco records ... yet it obviously works very well here.
Anther example where it worked equally successfully is in the tune FLY ROBIN FLY by Silver Convention ( If I'm hearing it right also )
I'm sure there are many others that would fit into this category of like songs if one investigated .... but they would be few and far between compared to the norm ....
Anyone onto what I'm referring too ... about the particular sound of these two mega hits ..... maybe its obvious .....

You're on the right track! I wasn't thinking about the piano aspect ( and someday it'd be nice to run a thread documenting all piano driven disco tunes on which WE ARE FAMILY and FLY ROBIN FLY would both be listed right toward the top ) but ,
it is about the instruments being used in these two songs .
Oh .... and it's also as importantly about the instruments not being used ;-)

Remicks: Stop teasin' or post this in the quiz section, where the equally interested (guess what I originally wrote) can get their rocks off wit' ya.:-D :-D :-D

But Quinny my dear ( guess what I originally wrote :p) .... this isn't a quiz per say ... its more of a challenge as to how in tune my fellow discoers are to the nuances of the music they so enjoy ....
Use your brain a little .... it don't hurt all that much .... and ya I suppose it is sort of a way to get one's rocks off !!!!

By the way LADY BUMP can be added to this group of songs ......

WE ARE FAMILY was released yesterday on the new WEA Rhino Definitive Groove Collection. The sound should be flawless, some great cuts, but sad to say short versions. I looked high and low trying to find the times on the cuts.
Always looking for remastered 12\" versions on CD
ok Remicks I think it the guitar riffs. both riffs were based on other songs I believe We are family the riffs were from Do what you wanna do by Children of God and i remember hearing somewhere fly robin fly came from run rabbit.
The continuous strings- although that wouldn't make these tracks stand out that much...
No, forget this post, it can't be the strings, since they ARE among the instruments making these tracks apply as disco. I'll listen to them and maybe post back later.

No tambourine or percussion instruments (except for drums and cymbals)?

Yes . Exactly . What am I hearing ?
Or is it, what am I not hearing ?
Or ... is it both?
Such are the questions for inquiring minds .... :icon_rolleyes: :icon_question:

we have inquiring minds; of that you can be assured mate. however, i think you had supply us with some more clues to this mystery lest it remain unsolved and keep everyone frustrated.
Err......huh?
Gosh it’s a new day isn’t it …..when Quinny is worried about posts irritating people . Concerned it might affect my "rep power" , Quin?:icon_rolleyes:
Of course the goal here is not to irritate , infuriate or agitate ….it’s really just to stimulate
For those interested .... a recap :
The following songs are all similar in sound in a way surprisingly not typical in disco .
In a random list of disco songs it would be the rare bird amongst them that would be comprised of this specific sound. So far, through just casual research … these are the few that have jumped out at me. (so far) (well actually there’s one more …. but its title is too telling)
WE ARE FAMILY --- Sister Sledge
DOWN TO LOVE TOWN --- The Originals
LOVE IS IN THE AIR --- Martin Stevens
FLY ROBIN FLY --- Silver Convention
LADY BUMP --- Penny McLean
GET UP AND BOOGIE --- Silver Convention
PORCUPINE --- Nature Zone
It’s not the guitars …. not the piano ….not the tambourine or percussion instrumentsmyself: it is about the instruments being used in these songs .
and it's also as importantly about the instruments not being used
Now as I said … it’s nothing too complicated … nothing so radical …. quite apparent really ... I thought a correlating observation would come quickly actually .
To figure it out inquiring minds need only listen to some disco...... which is what I assume all of us here do anyway. :icon_cool:

Quincy??!!![]()
If he were on the case I'm sure he'd have this solved!!
![]()
...ya gotta beat the street......
Grrrr this is becoming frustrating !!!
[In a nice teasing way of course !!
The only thing that came to mind was that the piano is imitating the bassline or that there is the use of a shaker as percussion.
But nahhhhhhhhhhhh that ain't it !!
