    Smile Disco Party August 1976

    Hello everyone,

My name is Bryce. I'm 24 years old and have a bunch of friends around the same age who I have challenged to come to a "real" disco party thrown by me. The purpose is to make them get some understanding of why I'm obsessed with disco. I'm a nerd, so I want to do something historically accurate. So, I'm setting the party in August of 1976. I've picked out about 40 songs that I want to narrow down to 15, but, for the life of me, I can't make things work. That's why I'm posting. I know a lot of you guys are/were DJs or did go to the clubs at the time. If any of you think you can come up with an order that could knock these non-believers off of their feet that would be great. Basically, the atmosphere I'm going for is fun mixed with sex mixed with songs that will really make you get down. And I think 15 should do the trick (we are the MTV generation after all, our attention spans are short). And if you have suggestions of songs that would be good, please suggest them. Thanks in advance.

Here are the songs (I tried to mix songs they know with underground stuff):

    Young Hearts Run Free
    Best Disco In Town
Los Conquistadores Chocolates - Johnny Hammond
Sun, Sun, Sun - Jak Ki
    Find My Way - Cameo
Night And Day - John Davis
    Turn The Beat Around
    10%
    Wasted - Donna
Try Me, I Know... - Donna
More, More, More - Andrea True
You'll Never Find - Lou Rawls
    I Love Music
    Disco Connection - Isaac Hayes
Foxy Lady - Crown Heights Affair
Let's Do The Latin Hustle - Eddie Drennon
    Baby Face - Wing & A Prayer
    Cathedrals - D.C. LaRue
    He's A Friend - Eddie Kendricks
Nice And Slow - Jesse Green
Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel
    Disco Party - Trammps
Jump For Joy - Biddu Orchestra
    Tangerine - Salsoul Orchestra
That Old Black Magic - Softones
Touch And Go - Ecstasy, Passion & Pain
    You Should Be Dancing
    Lowdown - Bob Scaggs
That's Where The Happy People Go
    Mighty High
My Love Supreme - Milton Hamilton
    Trouble Maker - Roberta Kelly
I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love - Emotions
    Union Man - Cate Brothers
    Cherchez La Femme
    High Energy - Supremes
    Elusive - Babe Ruth
Don't Stop The Music - Bay City Rollers
    Porcupine - Nature Zone
    Wow - Andre Gagnon
Don't Take Away The Music - Tavares
Could It Be Magic - Donna

    Bryce,

What an awesome list of songs you have there! I was 11 months old in August 1976, so I'm also of that generation that wasn't old enough to fully experience the disco period in its heyday. So many tunes you listed are personal faves of mine, especially Night And Day(John Davis), which I can play endlessly.

It's a good idea to mix the underground with the Top 40; I wish the average disco fan would take a chance to hear those underground tracks because they are so friggin' good!

The scene was more than just the music. You are going to fall way short trying to recreate the time period. Just throw another one of your generation's hip hop thug parties and call it a night. I'm afraid what we have here is just another example of 1970's nostalgia being sold to a younger unsuspecting demographic whose hipster tendencies dictate for them to stand out from the rest of their friends.

Would you like for me to mail out to you a couple of vintage SALSOUL and CONGAS t shirts for you and your friends to wear at your party?

How about a custom recorded DVD filled with the complete 1st season of PETROCELLI on it?

Hey, I think you have great list, but you need to add Sylvester to it.
If your in florida, let me know and Id like to come to the party.
You need to get a couple of hot chicks there, too, though.
You also need some good lights.

the best disco in town is not a real good dance song, and your friends wont like it.

But most of all, dont invite people who hate disco. They will ruin the party w/ their attitude.

but in reality, it will never happen.

The only reason I was going to do it is because the music they play at the dance club near here sucks

These are the ones I'd be left with out of your list and even some of these would be a tad dubious. Forget the really cheesy stuff.

Just BPM them and play in a BPM order that makes 'em fit together better. You'll never get them all to gel, so exciting segues would be the way to go in many cases. If you get together a set that excites you, chances are that it'll excite your fellow party goers.

Yikes, I thought this was a nice refreshing post and people turn on the poor guy!!! :-o:icon_sad::-o

I'll give you my thoughts later---I put them all in BPM (beats per minute) order...which will help with getting an energy flow....starting low and building up as the night progresses, maybe with a cool down from the peak (we called it "morning music"/ some call it "sleaze")...or do it any way you want....but I'll give you some ideas when I have time.

The only title I don't have is the Bay City Rollers tune--which I've been searching for. I'm impressed that you would have some of the more obscure titles in your collection. Are these downloads or do you actually have these on vinyl???? It would help to know if you are playing records, cds, mp3s or a combination of such.

But overall, Bryce I'm happy you like this music and want to share it with your friends!!! :D:D:D

    brycecam,

Welcome to the forum. It always thrills me to see younger people express so deep an interest in the music I grew up with. Good for you and I applaud you for trying to expose your friends to it in such an unselfish way by devoting your time and money into having others enjoy themselves. That's the TRUE Disco experience of having a good time with your friends and strangers-who will soon be your friends. :D Please let us know how it went.
