No one would dance to these songs except BEAT THE CLOCK.
Always looking for remastered 12\" versions on CD
I beg to differ!!Originally Written by mrbmarco
If you can't dance to Harvey Mason's "Groovin' You", Jean Carne's "Was It All It Was" or Janice McClains "Smack Dab In The Middle", surely you are made of stone! :-o
"Beat the clock" is a classic, however Sparks is known more as a new wave band than as doing disco (but they worked with Giorgio Moroder).
This song is featured in the mix bootleg "Bits & Pieces Part III: Let's do it".
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)
I Agree! and the same goes for POW WOW by Cory DayeOriginally Written by K-Bee
And Black Betty is an underground club classic around these parts:D We play it at every party where club music is the main focus - and it always keeps the floor packed.
There are about 2 or 3 I'm not familiar with, but all the ones I know are considered classics in the circles I travel....

That 202 Machine track is one of 100s to feature Jocelyn Brown on vocals. That woman must have lived in recording studios between 1978 & 1984!
...ya gotta beat the street......
:-o That's wild. I was thinking if I ranked this list, BEAT THE CLOCK would be my least favorite. And if there's a classic in the bunch, it's Jean Carn's, "WAS THAT ALL IT WAS". IMHO, of course.:DOriginally Written by mrbmarco

In 1979 when this Jean Carn came out--the dance crowd was packing the floor to such classics as STAR LOVE, DANCER, WE ARE FAMILY, HAVE A CIGAR, TAKE ME HOME, THE MAIN EVENT, I'VE GOT THE NEXT DANCE, CRANK IT UP, BORN TO BE ALIVE, THE BOSS, COME TO ME, MOVE ON UP, PUT YOUR FEET TO THE BEAT, HARMONY, POP MUZIK, THIS IS HOT and DON'T YOU WANT MY LOVE, just to name a few--
To be honest,I never heard that Jean Carn song about one night stands until a few months ago. Was it ever a top 10 Billboard Disco Hit?? What label was it on?? I don't remember getting it from the DJ pool. Its a great song with a great arrangement--I have the 12" version on my IPOD Its great to discover it now, but the crowd would not dance to it.

The Jean Carne track was on Philly Int of course. At the last count i had 7 copies of it on different formats,i guess i must like it .Harvey Mason-Groovin' you was used as a sample on a big house track afew years back - Gusto - Disco's Revenge. The Goody track is off a good album produced by none other than Vince Montana.
I only recently bought the Sparks record/album ("Number 1 in Heaven"). Love "Beat the Clock" but thought the opening track "Tryouts for the Human Race" would have attracted more attention. It's a classic Giorgio Moroder production, multi-layered and very similar to his electronic classics "I Feel Love" and "Chase". Don't know how I missed it when it was released. And though it's been mentioned before, the Sparks singer really had an operatic voice. I wonder if he influenced Freddie Mercury, or was it the other way around....
BOTH "Tryouts For The Human Race" & "Beat The Clock" were played heavily at Trocadero in SF. I recall arriving at Trocadero in the 2:00a.m. timezone and the building was vibrating with the bass of "Beat The Clock"....or was it just me???? :p:p:p

I guess it depends on your crowd, I certainly didn't play it every where either, but couples in many straight clubs, especially supper private clubs enjoyed dancing to this mellow pretty sound during the early hours of the night before things got crazy and laud. In this types of clubs (and other I assume)this cut and many other similar ones were used to built up the mood into the peak hours of the night when the crowds were at the heaviest and the bets cuts of the day were used.Originally Written by mrbmarco
Carn's 12" was available in a white Promo label on PIR and distributed in my local Record Pools, my copy still is in my 'oldies' crate in storage since I used this song until the late 80's.
Here is a re-issue in the vaults with a different label.

Ain't no stopping now- McFadden and WhiteHead
Heaven must be Missing and angel - Tavares (80's remix)
Hit and Run - Carol Jiani
In the evening- Sheryl Lee Ralph

Jean Carn was a BIG club record in certain parts of the U.K. Massive on the London scene.
If you guys really enjoy this song, I'd recommend the whole album. It's all high class late 70s Philly soul disco. The 12" flip 'What's On Your Mind' is a great uptempo dance number, with a wicked bass.Originally Written by mrbmarco

That song was pretty big in the UK soul scene. It's still quite an indemand 12" too.Originally Written by mrbmarco
From this same album comes the awesome, "My Love Don't Come Easy". And unlike MixMachine who used this type music to start the night, some of us were using it to bring in the morning.![]()

Hi Marcio,
If you're still following your post, are these on a cd?
Like Quinny, I'd have to say most of these areen't what I consider classics IMHO. Most are good though.
Find them and destroy them!
I have 1,5,9 & 10
