    This ain't disco :

    *****
This is intended to be an ongoing thread and anyone else who wants to participate is welcome to add any they want to here .

As a collector of all music disco .... I often take chances on records that I'm not familiar with because of the title ( or producers or writers ) they have a smell of being possibly disco .....

Many many times .... it turns out , they are not .:-(

So I'm going to start keeping track of some of such songs . (just for the record and maybe also saving others the trouble )

    First up:

    FUNKY BUT CHIC
    David Johansen 1978

Didn't recall Johansen doing disco .... but with such a clever title ...... I thought Johansen may have come up with a funk groove that simulated the Chic sound.
(It was also released on Blue Sky records ... very big in disco in 1978 because of Dan Hartman ...)

Nope .... not at all .....this is just your basic rock n roll .....

After buying Lady Night by Patrick Juvet I thought it couldn't hurt too much getting the "Still Alive" LP by him as well from 1980 (as far as I recall)
Not a good idea!! This has nothing to do with disco at all.
    There was life after disco!!

I think we all have fallen victim to this unfortunate situation. Getting a record expecting DISCO, and getting something else. The instance that comes into mind first, after HEART OF GLASS, I foolishly expected BLONDIE to now be a DISCO band. I bought or got a promo of their next album and low and behold, NOT DISCO. I am sure that pales in comparison with others who got NOT DISCO records expecting DISCO. It probably pales in my own other experiences with NOT DISCO records, but it is the first one that came to mind. Something to do with Debbie Harry.

I LOVE Debbie's solo albums such as Koo Koo.."Backfired" was HOT...and I found it to be dance worthy..by that time nothing was really labled as Disco..this was 1981..It was too soon after the so called Disco takedown.
and I also LOVE RockBird.."In Love With Love" and "french Kissing'
    the remixes were hot too...
Debbie has the versatility to be a rocker chick,New wave girl, punk Goddess and a Dance Diva.

I also love DEBBIE HARRY's entire catalogue very much. I discovered BLONDIE because they did a disco song but from there I explored and bought the old stuff.
KOO KOO is such a great album - Anything CHIC produced was top-notch in my book.

One album that I bought which doesn't qualify as "disco" is CHAKA KHAN "Chaka" (1978) ; I'M EVERY WOMAN had me expecting nothing but disco tracks.

Another one was ODYSSEY's "Hollywood Party Tonight" from 1978. I expected a lively disco affair but it was not. I discovered a lovely ballad though called "Lucky Star".

Understandably, DEBBIE HARRY WAS GREAT, her solo career was after"Disco", so I will grant you that and totally agree with you Dayna. Do you call T.K.A. and Rocker's Revenge, John Rocca and that whole freestyle movement "Disco", or the child that "Disco" fathered? JOEL DIAMOND put out a 12" in 1982 or so called "Super Strauss", remember that one? I got it through the record pool, but it was a medley , superbly done and performed, of CLASSICAL music? No where close to DISCO!!

    Re: This ain't disco :

DEFINITELY not disco (at least to my sometimes-faulty ear):

Donny Osmond's 1976 DISCO TRAIN LP (LP's top single was "C'Mon Marianne" - a bouncy pop cover of the Four Seasons hit from '67).

    -and-

Cheryl Ladd's 1978 single "Think It Over" (definitely NOT a cover version of Cissy Houston's dancefloor scorcher released the same year with the same title)

    -and-

Cheryl Ladd's 1979 DANCE FOREVER Lp . . .despite the LP's title and it coming out during disco's peak, the LP's contents are probably more lite country-pop than anything.

I can relate to this. It's not always a negative thing though, I've come across some really wonderful records this way, regardless of their disco credentials, so to speak..

A big one for me was Cissy Houston's self-titled album from 1977. It was on Private Stock Records, produced by Michael Zager, sporting a rather effervescent album cover.. Overlooking the tracklist it seems (the number of songs, times), I was expecting something like "Think It Over," but the record was actually a straight-ahead soulful affair. Mostly covers of songs like "Tomorrow", "Your Song" etc.. but she ends up putting her stamp on those songs, wringing more emotion out of them than one would even think is possible, IMO.. Best track on the record is her version of "Make It Easy On Yourself," which is absolutely beautiful.

Another one is Martha Velez' "Escape From Babylon" (1976, Sire) LP produced by Bob Marley. I wasn't really expecting a lot of disco, but there was a track on there called "Disco Night" which I was curious about. Not disco at all, it turns out, but a pretty nice reggae tune..

what can I say ? I plead guilty to digging shabby celebrity recordings (such as Miz Ladd, amongst others) and strange "disco" (for which Mr. Osmond certainly qualifies) :icon_lol:

Yes I think its fairly reasonable to suspect a song from 1976 called DISCO NIGHTS to be :... Disco !! :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:

That's the idea here ... the various little clues of unknown records that suggest their being disco .... and yet ..... they are not .....

Back in my younger days I actually wasted money getting Pink Floyd's LP "A Collection of Great Dance Songs", thinking that maybe, just maybe, they'd be getting the dancefloor remix treatment; all I got was the same ol' sh*t as in their regular albums, and I had never even OWNED or even LIKED Pink Floyd before.

I think most dance music is a by product of Disco..I personally LOVED the freestyle era..86-89..Dance music has evolved "IMHO not necessarily for the better" All they did was change the name of the genre and add whatever new technologies were avaliable..be it House, Hi-NRG.Techno,Breakbeat, Tribal.etc..

Well as an Osmond fan - yes there a few of us around - LOL - this was Donny's attempt at trying something different to his poppy MOR type of music he was known for. Its an okay album, but not his best. Its not pure disco but discoish. If you want something more discoy by Donny you'd have to look at the Brian Holland (of Holland Dozier Holland fame) produced Donald Clark Osmond or Donny & Marie's You're My Soul and Inspiration album also produced by Brian Holland.

Although ; the song MISSING YOU is a disco stomper - it was released on a 7in in the US and as a 12in in Canada.

I see that she also released SKINNY DIPPIN' on a promo 12in. I don't remember the song being very danceable but at 5 minutes + , the remix must have made the song more disco-friendly.It is also mentioned as Cheryl's first disco outing.

    Re: This ain't disco :

Back when I was first starting to buy disco, I was very intrigued by a song called "Footsee" by Wigan's Chosen Few, since it reached the Top 10 of the UK pop charts in 1975, but also because it was released on the "Pye Disco Demand" record label. It was a song I had never ever heard before, which was strange; generally one is familiar with nearly all top 10 hits of years gone by since they get played on the radio.

So when I found a 7" of the song for sale in a record shop, I bought it (I think it only cost me £1, anyway). I took the record home, put it on and couldn't quite believe what it was I was hearing! Not disco of course, but a 60s record with a crowd shouting "Footsee" ever so often.

I couldn't think of any possible reason I might want this record, so I took it back and gave it back to the shop owner on my next visit! Of course, since then, I've realised that anything on the "Pye Disco Demand" record label is to do with Northern Soul, and to me seems to have little to do with the disco that I know and love.
