Re: Converting vinyl to mp3 or wav

    Update:

I finished testing my newly built Linux Machine (Ubuntu Linux) and I now have Audacity installed along the LAME MP3 encoder to convert tracks to MP3. The factory sound card is functioning great under the Linux OS, so I plan on doing some test recording sometime over the weekend.

I will take notes in also documenting the settings I am using to shed a little light for those who are interested in trying this for themselves. Stay tuned!

Cory, I heard the same regarding DAK and it's a shame.

Back in the day, all you heard was good things about DAK; they were awesome.
I bought good stuff from them myself.
I don't what the deal is with them now.

I do know that the president (Drew Kaplan) went through a tough ordeal some years back, managed to revive DAK, and is trying to keep it going.

Back in the day, they were never like that.
I bought an EQ from DAK (an ADC, my first).
When I got it, it worked one day then the right channel went dead.

I called them and told them what happened and they told me to ship it back.
When I shipped it 2 days later, the replacement already came.
oh you haven't heard the worst of it. They ignored my email requests for help for MONTHS and MONTHS, and they also have some weird policy of "not sending any instructions through the mail" (what's the difference between sending something via email (mine wasn't working for a long time, hence the request for snail mail) or through the U.S. mail? After getting fed up with the game of cat and mouse, I finally just asked for a refund and guess what I'm told then? Too much time had passed! Well, if they'd responded to my earlier requests for help then "too much time" would NOT have passed! Obviously crooks, and if you've seen their recent ads ("Don't buy a USB turntable!) it appears more and more people are hip to their tricks and they're getting desperate. What goes around.....

Is there any software that filters out the snap crackle and pops? Also, what is a good source these days for a record cleaning system?

Back in the day i had something with a spray and 2 hand held dust brushes.

    Thanks

I can do that for you, if you'd like, in my studio. I also take out any background noise, including pops and clicks.

Roxio has a product called "Roxio Easy LP to MP3" that records from LPs and tapes to wav, mp3, wma, Audio CD or mp3Cd. I don't know much about it but there's probably info on their web site. These kind of functions are easy for some but not everyone, and I noticed long ago that not everyone can explain these functions in terms everyone can understand. That's why what works ("Oh, it's easy!") for some doesn't work for all. 1/26/2010

In my studio I have the Nitty Gritty, use a Denon digital turntable, record it using ProTools, and remove noise with Waves Diamond.

How does any of the above match up with Goldwave?.. I hadn't seen it mentioned in this thread.

I use Adobe Soundbooth CS5 to record my vinyl to wav format. It has a function to eliminate clicks and pops and/or rumble. To get the best sound quality, you'll want to go through a USB soundcard, preferrably one with RCA inputs so you can hook up your turntable or receiver through Tape 2 (if equipped). I use the Behringer UCA202. I can monitor the vinyl transfer using headphones or my speakers. It is very easy to set up, cheap, and most importantly, it sounds fantastic!

Various factors affecting how good the vinyl sounds when going from the record itself into it's final mp3 or wav/CDR format. The quality of the record player, the quality of the sound card in your computer, the type of software. I'm not too fancy, so I don't mind Goldwave. The pops and clicks are there to stay, and when you convert tracks into mp3, sometimes they disappear, so I don't feel the need to invest money into expensive programs.

I found Goldwave does an adaquate job of removing the pops & clicks in WAV, though once converted to an MP3, you create more damage to the sound to get rid of them.
