Does anyone recall the disco station in Syracuse?

I think it was called Disco Q, but I'm not sure.

The station that started out 78/79 or so? That was indeed Disco Q, iirc. Most of the jocks were classmates or ex-classmates of mine at Newhouse (S.U.). Butch Charles was a jock and possibly a station manager (he was a big deal on WAER Syracuse University and graduated a year ahead of me, iirc). He used to do alot of live mixing on WAER and at parties, and brought those skills to Disco Q.
My student advisor, a fellow named Mike (cannot remember his last name) was the afternoon drive jock. I remember calling him up to complain in the fall of '79 to complain about the music (they were playing very little disco and rather more funk and r&B).
NRG, do you remember a local show on AM radio that used to play mixes on Saturdays and Sundays (started listening to it in '77)? The station was a "Black" format, but they would run mixes from time to time.

God, I remember Disco Q! I seem to remember that it wasn't a 24 hour channel. Didn't they stop broadcasting at like...6pm? I have very fond memories of listening - there wasn't much exposure to the music, other than the hits for a high schooler like me at the time.

I also remember a little booklet that would come out every month, which I think compiled Disco Q's chart, along with single reviews & stuff.

Was the other R&B station WOLF? (It's now Disney radio...) Back when I was a little kid, WOLF was "thee" AM station in the area before they changed formats multiple times.

Hi Wolversyr! WOLF-AM doesn't ring a bell for time frame, though it very well may have changed names (I left the area in late '80). I'm thinking it was in the 1100 range on AM, iirc.
There was a FM channel, popular on campus, that had no "live" jocks, but was completely computerized. It was a Top 40 plus channel, playing album-length versions of Top 40 songs (for example, the album cut of Little River Band's "It's A Long Way There") as well as non-charting material such as Paul Nicholas' "Heaven On The Seventh Floor". They'd play 2 or 3 cuts uninterrupted, then a canned voice would identify artist/song. Does that ring any bells?

I remember the computerized station. Don't recall the call letters, but Buffalo had a similar station called Rock 102.

The voice went something like "that was "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward and before that "Tragedy" from The Bee Gees.

Is that old Mc Donalds still on Erie Blvd? One of the originals.

You know, the other station that played R&B does kind of ring a bell. I can't remember the call letters though. I think I would tune into them when Disco Q went off the air at night. I don't think I spent much time listening though as I wasn't too into funk & R&B stuff at the time. I spent a lot of time as a teenager listening to albums & 12"ers rather than the radio.

    I don't remember a canned top 40 station.

Thanks for the old WOLF playlist - God, I don't remember half of those songs!

The old McDonalds is gone, sadly, replaced by a modern one. I think there's still one of the old style McDonalds in North Syracuse.

Honestly, this was one of the last places I would have thought to come for hometown nostalgia! Nice to see some other people who remember this stuff!

Wolv and NRG, I don't remember that McDonald's, but what I do remember was that big Chinese restaurant on Erie Blvd. with the Szechuan lobster (cannot recall the name, was something rather generic).
Best pizza - lots of contenders, but Zorba's just off-campus was the best!
Best after-club eaterie - IHOP (especially the chocolate-chip pancakes). This was the stop after Lost Horizon/Orpheus. If I worked a party, that IHOP was still open !

I think the Eggplant might still be around & in the same place. They disappeared for a short time & came back. You really didn't miss much.

I spent a lot of time at the Lost Horizon after it became a live music club. I never went when it was a disco. The floor was so warped, I can't imagine how anyone danced there. We mostly went to Oliver's (the old Uncle Sam's) or Ryan's to dance.

I remember Oliver's. One time I was there and the dj played "Jeopardy" by Greg Kihn and kept mixing back and forth with "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life".

There's not a problem that I can't fix cause I can do it in the mix....
