    Re: Disco Versions

Two Gino Soccio albums feature a version of "Love is" by Bill Withers. He also produced a version of "Hold on I'm comin'" for Karen Silver.

The Raes did disco versions of both "To love somebody" (Bee Gees) and "School" (Supertramp) :-o

Both "Never can say goodbye" and "Reach out I'll be there" had been soul hits for Jackson 5 and Four Tops before Gloria Gaynor recorded them in 1975.

There are many, many more. In fact, some house bands did their own albums consisting almost entirely of cover versions (MFSB, The Players Association, Rhythm Heritage...)

    Re: Disco Versions

there are many many more of this..:p

Here are some pre-SNF ones, from back in the days when Club Disco Music was influenced by many musicals styles and the Dance floors were filled with a tapestry of different sounds..

    Volare - Al Martino ('75)
The More I see you - Al Martino ('76)
Cara Mia- Paul Delicato ('76)(previously by Jay and the Americans)
Where the Boys are - Wallis (76)
Will You love me tomorrow - Dana Vallery ('76) (later covered again by 'Morning Drive' among others)
Autumn Leaves- Jon White Group ('76)
Smoke gets in your eyes- Penny McLean ('75)
Strangers in Paradise- Benny Troy ('75) (later also covered by Issac Hayes)

This are all pure Disco versions played in all early Disco clubs in North America!!! :p , ( and I don't care what Quinny says):icon_mrgreen::p:p

Edit: "The More I see you" - Al Martino ('76) Later covered very nicely by Violla Wills

    Good topic.

I can think of one album with all oldies - John Davis & The Monster Orchestra - Night & Day. The whole album features Cole Porter tunes, with the exception of I Can't Stop.

The Frankie Crocker and the Heart & Soul Orchestra albums from '76 and '77 contained old standards. The first LP had tracks like Poinciana and The Very Thought Of You, among others, while the second had September In The Rain and Tuxedo Junction.

Esther Phillips - Our Day Will Come, What a Dif'rence a Day Makes

Linda Cliffird - Bridge Over Troubles Waters

Look no further than any Gloria Gaynor album - she usually had at least one cover on each - How High the Moon, You're All I Need To Get By, Tonight (From West Side Story,) As Time Goes By...

Candi Staton - Nights On Broadway, Listen to the Music

Bette Midler - Strangers in the Night

Consumer Rapport - Ease on Down the Road

Grace Jones - La Vie en Rose, Tomorrow, Send in the Clowns, What I Did for Love, Warm Leatherette, Love is the Drug

    Arpeggio - Runaway

    Madleen Kane - Fever

    Sylvester - Fever

Roberta Kelly - Oh Happy Day

Weren't there entire cover albums of reworked Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin and Beatles songs? I can't remember the names of the studio groups though. I do remember one had a black cat on the cover - think it was the Rolling Stones one.

The Wonder Band did Stairway To Heaven and Whole Lotta Love.

Cafe Creme did a medley of Beatles songs called Discomania.

Moulin Rouge did a whole cover album of early Bee Gee's songs.

Munich Machine did A Whiter Shade Of Pale.

Fever did a great cover of Standing in The Shadows Of Love.

And while some did not care for it, Ethel Merman made a disco album of show tunes and standards, most of which she had made famous in the first place.

Haha I remember those, however they weren't disco per se but cheap tricks to fool people... The album covers were always typographic (no pics whatsoever) and the titles went something like this:

    THE GREATEST HITS OF
    THE BEATLES (*)

    then, way down, it read:

(*) As played by "The Greatest Hits Band"

There were also some disco compilations along these lines: they offered things like "Hot Stuff" by Donna SUMPER, "Funkytown" by LIPS MINT and "Cocomotion" by EL MARKY :)

Almost all songs by Boys Town Gang are covers; «Can't take my eyes off you» (1982) of course but on the same album we have three more covers : «Disco kicks» (1981), «Signed signed delivered I'm yours» and «You're the one».
Jebadiah is a group that did Rolling Stones covers («Rock'n'soul» album produced by Michael Zager in 1978 for Epic ; very very bad).
Helen Davis covered «Satisfaction» in 1977 (Ode records).
    All the first Linda Clifford album in 1977 (with «From now on»), «If my friends could see me now» (1978 ), «One of those songs» (1979), «Ain't no love lost», «I had a talk with my man» (1980).
    Amii Stewart : «The letter» (1979) -also covered by Dionne Warwick (1979).

Diana Ross : «The same love that made me laugh» (1977), «What you gave me» (1978 ), «I'll keep my light in my window» (with M. Gaye in 1979, covered also by Eruption in 1978 and by the NY Community Choir in 1978 too).
    Eruption : «I can't stand the rain», «Movin'» (1977).
    Boney M with Precious Wilson : «Hold on I'm comin'» (1979).
    Cerrone : «Black is black» (1976), «Freak connection» -a cover of «Standing in the shadows of love» (1983).
The Sylvers : «Mahogany» (1979) -the theme from the Diana Ross movie.
Bonnie Pointer : «Heaven must have sent you» (1978 ) and almost all songs on her 1979 album.
    Smokey Robinson : «Get ready» (1979).
    The Blue Notes : «All I need» (1978 ).
    Buffalo Smoke : «Stubborn kind of fella» (1978 ).
    Isaac Hayes : «Fever» (1979).
